Looking for a great set of Wired Headphones

There are a lot of good used headphones in your budget.  If you have not visited head-fi I strongly recommend stopping by, there are many threads about closed back headphones and the site is dedicated to headphones.  I currently use Focal Slellia, Sony MDR-Z1R, and ZMF Verite Closed.  Enjoy the search.

Currently I'm using my Beats Pro Detox Edition Headphones that I've owned for years now. Not bad at all, but they do leave some to be desired.

I'm looking for a set that is wired, no mic, closed back.

Will be used just for listening to classic rock. Would like a 3.5mm jack. I have a 1/4" adapter for the option of plugging it into my receiver as well.

I tried some Bose before and was impressed with them.

I had a Meze Empy at $3K and I thought it was rather good. There is something called the Meze 99 Classic that is supposed to be along the lines of the Empy. The Classic is $300.

Focal are really good and easy to drive. What headphone amp and source do you have. Like all things audio you need matching components to get the most out of it.

if you are actually just using an iPhone or something like that then look at Ultrasonde they have some amazing headphones that can work of with very low quality / power output.

What is your source going to be? Do you want to make sure that the headphones if I have complementary sensitivity and impedance.

Bottom line, if you want a warmer, richer sound within your headspace the R9 might be good, but if you’re looking for a more balanced, tonally accurate sound that gives you a larger soundstage that goes outside your head the Sundara is a better choice.  I think the Sundara is a better headphone, but it’s all personal preference and that’s totally up to you.  The Meze is also very much worth a look.  Hope this helps a little. 

Here are some great deals on some ‘phones that are at an entirely different level than Bose or Beats. If you’re looking for boosted or bloated bass stay with Bose or Beats, but if you want to hear real music the way it was recorded either of these would be a big step up. Read reviews and see which one might best suit the type of sound you’re looking for, but either are much better than what you have now and way below your budget. Just my $0.02 FWIW.  The Meze recommendation above is also very good, but the Sennheiser recommendations are all open backed so not really appropriate for your needs   Best of luck.

Try some of the Meze Audio 99 Neo and 99 Classic with wood cups they are much less expensive than what you mentioned but punch way above their price points, also try the Meze 109 Pro's they are a little more than your budget but are very very good.

Anything Sennheiser in the 5-6 line. HD580,600 and 650. HiFi Man Ananda when they go on sale as open box can usually be found at the top of your range. Those are from my personal experience. Trying not to dog but, it doesn't take much to better the Beats phones, especially the older ones. I've heard that thry have improved since Apple bought them but the older ones were aimed at the Hip Hop heavy bass crowd. I read an article that said one reviewer took one apart and found lead weights inside to try to make them appear more substantial.
