How many pair of speakers do you own?

Since I am a self proclaimed speaker nut, I was trying to justify to my wife that having 5 pair of speakers is normal for an audiophilic addict. Curious also about what type, Dynamic, Planar, Single Driver etc; If you are member of this sight, you probably have a mania towards some component or other. Mine is Loudspeakers, which I learned early are 70% of your system. To me they may be >> 80%

Thanks>>>>

6 pairs that matter. There's a bunch of stragglers around here that aren't worth talking about, and eventually will be liquidated.
4 pair for 2 channel(Canton Karat M-70,JM Lab 816s(soon to be for sale),Revel F-30,and Soliloquy 6.3i(arriving this week). In addition we have 5 home theater set-ups(3 in bedrooms, one in my wife's sitting room and one in the family room). These feature Canton,Mirage Omni,MB Quart and Boston Acoustics speaker systems.I stopped playing with Electrostats and planars a long time ago.I prefer full range speakers without subs for theater and 2 channel, although;we use very small satelites and subs in 3 of the theaters.I have owned far too many pair of speakers to remember them all(I'm 49 and have been involved in this insane hobby since I was 17. Hope this makes you feel better!

Larry
Eight pairs + one center channel. Of these, six pairs plus the center channel are in service in various rooms of the house. In addition, I have five subwoofers. (Not to mention incidental stuff like computer speakers.)
I have 4 sets of speakers... all PSB. One pair in the living room, one pair in the bedroom, and one 5 channel set-up in the den. Also a back up pair I am presently not using.
john
1 Pair for living room Silverline Audio, 1 pair for mstr bed room ( Fostex full range ), 1 pair for guest room ( Spica TC-50 ) and 5.1 for family room. Total 5 1/2 pairs :-)
6 pairs. MBL 101E, Talon Khorus, Talon Peregrine, Newform Research R645, Martin Logan Aerius, Magnepan MG1.

Actually, I've got 5 of the Talon Peregrines, used in a 7.1 system.
Counting stuff in storage as well (but not PC or car systems), 13 pairs of speakers. 1 set is Bose and should not really count but the rest are B&W or better...
Thanks you so much for the quick respnses, my next question would be why you would own more than 2 pairs of speakers such as one for Stereo and one for HomeTheater (5 or 6)

1) Because you feel the urge to keep hearing others
2) You are still looking for Audio Nirvana
3) You have a large sum of money
4) You write reviews and get them free
5) They are very good for furniture
8 pairs. One pair of floorstanders, the rest are monitors. All are in use at various times.
Another pair on the way.
About 9 pair. Most boxed away. I tell my wife I'm more of a 'collector' now. :-) Still doesn't really work.

at last count 7...reason? for fun. listed by size:
JBL L-200
JBL L-166
AR 11
Epicure 10
Spica TC-50
Chario Academy 1
Ensemble Animata
To answer your second question, none of your suggested answers applies.

In my case, (1) when I upgrade, I don't get rid of the old equipment -- they usually just get reallocated to other rooms; and (2) I think it's nice to be able to listen to good music reproduction in different rooms especially when it is also consistent with the decor. Do you have children? Are they into music? Should they have their own stereos, too?

Of my 8 pairs + 1, 2 pairs + 1 center channel are in my main system, which is both my best stereo and home theater system, and 4 pairs are in stereo systems in other rooms. (2 pairs are in storage.)
1) 1 pair Cain Abby (main speakers)
2) 2 Mission 731i, 70C, Sony Surrounds ("Home theater")
3) Tivoli Model One
4) maybe a pair of Quad ELS57

Total 8-10 speakers sitting around.
why you would own more than 2 pairs of speakers

More than one place to live - nonlocal entanglement.
You have no idea how useful this thread, but just one question first, where on earth do you keep them? To answer the question, I have 1 pair only, obviously not a serious audiophile then. My wife insists I am being extravagant when I bought some Acoustic Zen Adagios recently(and sold my Living Voice Avatars). When she next criticises me, I can wave the print out of this thread at her and prove how frugal I am. Seriously, I would have nowhere to keep more than 1 pair.
5 pairs at one point, only 3 pairs now if you count the pair I gave to my parents.

Sonus Faber Amati
Sonus Faber Cremona
Usher X-718

If I can, I will own the whole entire Homage line of Sonus Faber just because. But life is more fun with more varieties, I am going to own something very differnt.

I asked a friend why he had 7 turntables, he asked me back why I had 5 pairs of speakers. I was speechless... Now I am thinking about picking up a 2nd turntable.
Counting subwoofers, a total of 20 speakers. And I just sold 2 pairs. When you have 2 home theaters and a couple of stereo systems, it adds up. Luckily most of them are small.
Three pairs and one in the process of being completed.

I say music needs to be in every room.
Why? there are probably 2 basic reasons -
1) There are multiple rooms in my house (plus a vacation house) that I want to be in at various times and don't want to be without music.
2) I enjoy the contrasting qualities of different speakers/systems - I guess I'm just a hardware geek.
3 pair maggies for surround, big maggies front and rear
2 pair SEAS EXCEL based home brew,
1 extra above for center channel
1 pair Spica
1 pair focal/vifa home brew for the daughter
1 pair garage speakers
3 different under $300 pairs of computer speakers.
2 pair out on loan, JSE and JBL
4 subs, none under 10 cu ft./Home brew over 300#'s each.
In walls in the living room.
Patio speakers 2 pair

As I started going through this it occurs I should possibly be seeing a hear shrinker. Except, I build speakers so having lots of different types around for voicing reference helps. Nah I need to see a shrink and audiogon/e-bay.

Lets not even go near amps huh.
3 pairs...gradient revolutions(passive), castle harlechs, , and the greatest i have ever owned, AR classic 30's.

WOW, I CAN'T BELIEVE THE GREAT RESPONSES AND AMAZING # OF SPEAKERS YOU GUYS HAVE, I AM CURRENTLY LOVING SINGLE DRIVER SPEAKERS AND AM IN THE PROCESS OF PURCHASING A FLOOR STANDER. I WENT FROM SOLELY DYNAMICS TO ONLY PLANAR/ELECTROSTATICS BACK TO DYNAMIC AND NOW SINGLE DRIVER CROSSOVERLESS SPEAKERS. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ALL THE SPEAKERS ABOVE, BUT I JUST HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT AUDIO SHOW IN NEW YORK IS BEST FOR ME. I AM LIKE A KID IN A CANDY STORE GOING TO THESE SHOWS. I AM HAPPY THAT I AM NOT ALONE IN MY SPEAKERMANIA>> THANKS TO ALL AGAIN!!!!
WOW, I CAN'T BELIEVE THE GREAT RESPONSES AND AMAZING # OF SPEAKERS YOU GUYS HAVE,. . .
well the thing that we aren't talking about which makes this even more decadent is that most of these sets of speakers have a full complement of electronics to drive them. Oh, and what about the spares that are in the closet?
YIKES...yup...that's the first word that comes to mind. Similar to the old "What does your system retail for?" thread...It would be morbidly interesting to see what the retail value is of the stuff that all you guys have collecting dust.

oh...yeah...and to answer the question. One pair.
Holy Crap ! The cat is out of the bag now, truly. I'm more concerned about the many, many pairs that have passed through here, let alone the 4, no 5 pairs that are currently resident chez moi.

Vintage pieces need to be used, don't forget.

But more importantly, ADVERTISE HERE WHEN YOU ARE READY TO DOWNSIZE YOUR COLLECTIONS !!
Four pairs also for me with only two pairs currently connected to an amplifier partner. B&W N802's and Triad System 3 hooked up and Green Mountain Diamantes and B&W CM1/2 the original matrix speakers sitting on the sidelines. In fact, I have more than one of every component. You always need to have a backup in case something breaks or needs an update.
1. Spendor SP1 - Still in box after last move
2. Spendor LS35a 2 pair......1 pair in Kitchen - other living room
3. Proac 2.5 Main Listening Room in Den

Frankly the LS35a's have the most enjoyable sound - although I do listen to the Proacs the most.
Three...no, four. No, wait a minute. Does my wife's dresser top system count?
I think I have about 15 pairs that I have acquired over the years and about 10 pairs that I have built in the last few years during my DIY years. I have about 4 or 5 more brands that I want to experience before I start going the other direction.
My current lineup

#1 Ohm Walsh
#2 Epicure 3.0
#3 DCM Time Windows
#4 Kinetic Audio Efficiency
#5 Bose 901 series 2 (Stacked)
#6 AR 2s

Speakers that I had recently, and did not keep.
#1 JBL Northridge E100
#2 Klipsh SF2

Next in lne on my wish list.
#1 a set of magnepan's
#2 A vintage pair of Allison's
#3 Any deal I can find
Klama,
Your 1,2, and 3 are some of my all time faves...
How do you like those Epicure 3's?
Good luck on some vintage Allisons.. get the big ones with the two 10" woofs at the bottom
12 pairs?
Joseph RM22si mains
Monitor R90 as surrounds
(just sold) Dynaudio 52s
SnellKIIs in box awaiting new surrounds
Polk somethings at work hooked to a T-amp
3 pairs hooked up in the backyard to one receiver!
SARAS vintage hooked to Rotel as garage workbench system
few other no name/DIY things laying around - think they add up to 10 or 12 pairs.

Six full systems in the house - plus work and computer. Everytime you find a new pair gotta find a new receiver at a thrift shop... keep growing those systems...
Xiekitchen, I listed my speakers in the order of my preference.

I’ve have only been in this hobby for about a year now, and can not give you what I would consider an experienced review.

But I really do like the Epicure 3.0's. I was lucky to find these on eBay just a few blocks from my house. When I picked them up I was surprised to see the cabinets in mint shape, and was devastated as I watched the foam surrounds on the 6” drivers deteriorate before my eyes within a half hour. This ended up being my first re-foam project.

I have not had them very long, just a few months. But they have quickly moved towards the top of my list. They have a very tight and clear sound, with more than sufficient base. I have so far been very impressed with them.

As far as sound goes, I feel they are my best sounding speaker. The only reason I list the Ohm’s higher, is for the presented soundstage. The Ohms just work like magic in my listening environment. They are the only speaker I own that can present a sound stage regardless of my position in the room. The Epicure’s do sound better if I am seated in there sweet spot.
I once sold a pair of speakers to a guy that had 5 systems. One in a dedicated listening room and then 1 each in the MBR, LR, FR, and, yes, the garage.

An offense is always the best defense. How many shoes does your wife have? My wife cannot walk past a shoe store.
10 pairs

- Thiel CS6
- Aerial 8b's
- VonScweikert VR4 GEN 3
- Alon iv's
