Thanks for everyone sharing there stories... My father just went home after three weeks. It’s always something when you get that precious time with them! We spent evenings listening to his old vinyl (old 50’s country, jazz, blue grass, and folk). And his stories, priceless! I hope we all get to enjoy music like this with the ones we love! I have already ordered a new TT and cables. I’m opting to stay with Marantz in their TT-15s1 @millercarbon Im not sure if you’ve heard/listened to Marantz Reference components but the PM-11s3 is one heck of a integrated! It’s phono stage is very well reviewed, so to say it’s one step above crap is a little out of line. Now I’m not saying where it competes in the grand scheme of things but if it makes a $500 TT sound this good it’s probably pretty good! https://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/marantz-reference-series-pm-11s3-integrated-amplifier-and-...https://www.audioholics.com/amplifier-reviews/marantz-pm-11s3 |
My guess is the SACD will sound close to the turntable ..... although both SACD and TT depend a lot on the quality and accuracy of their sub-components. That's been my experience playing a TT with a properly loaded Accuphase AC-2 cartridge and a Counterpoint preamp, vs. an Oppo 105. |
Welcome to the dark side.... :) |
Audioman, how does this relate to the Original Post? Let the man enjoy his music without trying to convince him to buy more stuff! Good for you, OP. Enjoy the music, and share with your dad and anyone else who will listen! These fools who want you to part with your money are jealous you like what you have (at least for now). If you want to spend some money in a good way, buy more albums. And enjoy! audioman581,410 posts10-15-2019 4:40am

Lampizator recently came out with the new Amber-3 dac it has a bunch of trickle down technologies from their top $25k pacific dac for under $3k delivered enjoy the music.com recently reviewed it 5 stars across the board for music. And a 14 day return if not happy Very analog sounding with excellent detail in some cases betterthen vinyl, and you can make it better still ,good aftermarket fuse, good power cord, and upgrading the rectifier tube and the 12au7 tube , the ecc99 super tube is very good . this makes it better still Brent Jesse recording I get my vintage nos tubes .i sold my $6k psaudio flagshipdac to buy this dac much more 3D realism !! |
Enjoy your setup, and avoid chasing something that doesn’t exist.
There is always a bigger fish, faster car, nicer house, better stereo and more striking blonde. (I’m partial to blondes)
Spend your energy, time, and money on the people in your life and buy gear when you have some spare time.
You’ve hit the lottery with your Dad, keep recreating that in your life and you’ve won this silly race.
Old Uncledemp wouldn’t steer you wrong.

Thanks for sharing your joy and congratulations on your Project S-2 purchase. I am wondering as well, how have you lived with a subpar Sonos Connect for 2 years? You were advised to replace the Sonos to better your digital experience...... https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/what-should-my-next-upgrade-be-your-best-experienceComparing Sonos/Deezer with a decent TT is a unfair comparison. The Connect in its stock form is pretty much ‘garbage in garbage out’. |
Great story! Thank you for sharing! Enjoy your listening!! |
@264win, vinyl really is surprising. I returned to it a few years back when my mom needed to move into assisted living. I recovered my original Thorens, ling stored in her house, that I slaved an entire summer to buy working as a golf caddy. I was 14. Anyway, once I got that hooked up, it also blew me away and brought me back to my old interest in hifi. What a great hobby. While my dad definitely had a system that got me initially interested, our music tastes at the time were very different. If he were still alive, we would now share many of the same musical tastes. I wish I had the amazing opportunity you now do. Enjoy the memories you are making with him. Not all of us have that chance. Precious! |

my Dad had a cow when I came home with a Denon and a Grado instead of the Dual / Shure he sent me out to get, until he listened...Pops turned me on to music and hifi gear, thanks and RIP
so glad you and Dad are enjoying vinyl... make every minute count |
millercarbon....Why can't you just let the OP just enjoy what he has discovered instead of suggesting what "could have been"? I like to think that people posting on these forums like to share their personal opinions or offer suggestions for improvements. Not the place for that here. There are ALWAYS ways to improvement but this particular post isn't the place to do it. Let the guy seek his own improvements in the future but don't diminish the joy he is experiencing now.

If you like it now, wait till you hear it with a decent phono stage. It sounds like you were using a turntable that had a built-in phono stage, which would explain your comments as those are crap. But now you are using the stage in the Marantz receiver, which is one small step up from crap. Which is actually the good news, as the huge step up you heard is with a phono stage on a card in a receiver, something easily beaten hands down no contest by virtually any stand alone phono stage. Of course then you will have to add a decent quality interconnect. But that is your weak link at the moment, the phono stage. Upgrade that and be amazed all over again.
Oh and since you asked, the reason no one ever suggested trying the TT is everyone has been brainwashed to the delusion its old tech not worth the time. Only takes a few minutes actually listening to destroy that one, as you now know. But hardly anyone takes the time. Good on you for making the effort. |
Love this story, thank you for sharing! So good! |
You’re fortunate to have such a great relationship with your Dad.
What a great compliment to your Father, and a great post to share.
Enjoy!

Thanks guys! You are right, they are treasures. I went out and bought more Vinyl today so we can continue our music time together.... |
Great story, thank you for that. Keep enjoying your father's story's and him as they are both treasures. Enjoy the music. |
So nice to have such a father! What kind of music does he hear?
|
Good for you. Now imagine what's possible with even better gear!
