I like Ian Stewart's work with the Rolling Stones. Particularly "Monkey Man" off of Let It Bleed. Chuck Leavell (now with the Stones) with Allman Bros. is great- especially "Jessica" from Brothers and Sisters. JoJO Herman from Widespread Panic- especially on Light Fuse and Get Away. Bruce Springsteen's "Jungleland" and a more obscure one- T. Lavitz from the Dixie Dregs. My favorite is probably "I'm Freaking Out" from Dregs of the Earth. |

Bruce Hornsby - Harbor Lights. Not sure it's classic rock but pretty close and the piano work is stellar, one of my favorites.

"Aladdin Sane" has a smoking piano solo by Mike Garson. Very impressive sonically as well. Oh, just saw the OP mentioned this - he's on to something. :)

One of the best IMHO is Dr. John. He plays a distinctive style- 'NoLeans, but his playing and style is clean and distinctive.
His LP, Gumbo. Lots of excellent tunes showing off his great piano chops. |

I agree with Oregon's Dr. John suggestion. I will go one step further in the 'NoLeans' rock and roll piano genre and recommend Prof. Longhair. His "Rock and Roll Gumbo" has been a party album in my house for years. Longhair's syncopated rythyms inspired generations of musicians and his style always gets the crowd going. |
Continuing in the N'Awlins vein started by Oregon, above, I'll suggest Allen Toussaint. Best SQ is on "The Bright MIssissippi", but that's not rock n roll. His Warner Bros. 2 disc compilation features terrific, piano driven rock/funk/soul/pop, but the SQ isn't remarkable.
