Martha - Beatles from The Beatles

Carousel by Happy The Man from their debut album |
Low Spark of High Heeled Boys-Traffic is a fav of mine. Simple piano but just works so well. |
I like Ian Stewart's work with the Rolling Stones. Particularly "Monkey Man" off of Let It Bleed. Chuck Leavell (now with the Stones) with Allman Bros. is great- especially "Jessica" from Brothers and Sisters. JoJO Herman from Widespread Panic- especially on Light Fuse and Get Away. Bruce Springsteen's "Jungleland" and a more obscure one- T. Lavitz from the Dixie Dregs. My favorite is probably "I'm Freaking Out" from Dregs of the Earth. |
Nicky Hopkins - whatever he played on. Check out EDWARD, THE MAD SHIRT GRIND - QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE for one. |
Some of my favs: Foghat-Fool for the City Allman Brothers-Eat a Peach Lynyrd Skynyrd-Street Survivor |
A second for Chuck Leavell, for his solo on "Jessica" as well as his work with Sea Level and the Rolling Stones.
Pick up any old Bruce Hornsby album for great piano, too. |
"Nineteen Hundred and eighty five" - Wings "Firth of Fifth" - Genesis "Trilogy" - Emerson Lake and Palmer "Cat Food" - King Crimson |
Stones' Let's Spend the Night Together and Fats Domino's Whole Lotta Lovin' |
Awesome piano work in Supertramp's "Brother Where you Bound". Not as well known as some of the other Supertramp records, but a classic IMHO. Listerning to it now because of this thread.... |
Bruce Hornsby - Harbor Lights. Not sure it's classic rock but pretty close and the piano work is stellar, one of my favorites. Phish - Billy Breathes has some good rocking piano work. |
"Aladdin Sane" has a smoking piano solo by Mike Garson. Very impressive sonically as well. Oh, just saw the OP mentioned this - he's on to something. :)
For barrelhouse blues, Ian Stewart's opening solo on "Flight 505" - I hope they play it at my funeral. |
Garth Hudson in The Band's Last Waltz |
"bennie and the jets" elton john "angry young man" billy joel |
"mad man moon" genesis "Lady madonna" the beatles |
One of the best IMHO is Dr. John. He plays a distinctive style- 'NoLeans, but his playing and style is clean and distinctive. His LP, Gumbo. Lots of excellent tunes showing off his great piano chops. |
Ocean Breeze-Pablo Cruise |
I agree with Oregon's Dr. John suggestion. I will go one step further in the 'NoLeans' rock and roll piano genre and recommend Prof. Longhair. His "Rock and Roll Gumbo" has been a party album in my house for years. Longhair's syncopated rythyms inspired generations of musicians and his style always gets the crowd going. |
Continuing in the N'Awlins vein started by Oregon, above, I'll suggest Allen Toussaint. Best SQ is on "The Bright MIssissippi", but that's not rock n roll. His Warner Bros. 2 disc compilation features terrific, piano driven rock/funk/soul/pop, but the SQ isn't remarkable.

I don't know if this song counts but I really always enjoy November Rain by Guns N Roses. |

Derek & The Dominoes - Layla (the song) |
Nobody has listed layla yet from Eric Clapton? Wow |
+1 for Nicky Hopkins- I'd strongly recommend the stuff he did w Steve Miller Bank circa 1970-1972. |
