One that wasn't mentioned here that caught me by surprise was the song from the movie Crash, In The Deep.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbQPxJ10KWs Beautiful ghostly, evocative... Bird York? Never heard of her, but what a nice surprise. Another not mentioned is Ricky Lee Jones early work and first solo album... "Texaco" is an all time classic... |
Being jazz centric Ella for sure.Like the old joke goes you have her "sing the telephone book" and it would be great.Other jazz would beyond big names like Holiday,Vaughn,Dinah Washington,I would add Anita O'Day,Carmen McRae,Chris Connor, and of course Betty Cater. Also love Ernestine Anderson and the tragiuc Beverlley Kenney. Now I think Dee Dee Bridgewater is best.Newer singer Stacey Kent. But Goosebumps?Ella say on LP "Like Someone In Love".Next to That Nina Simone singing "I Loves You Porgy". What is deal with Norah Jones?I don't get her,Monheit or Mrs.Costello (or is that Mr.Krall?).Some like Pat Barber but again I just don't get it. Beyond jazz Maria Callas.Janis.In folk Kraus. And of course Althea Franklin. They all produce goosebumps. But Ella, though she had faults (on blues where folks said she sounded "too damn cheery") could swing it and give a ballad which would make you arm look liked a plucked Turkey. Check out "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" on that "Like Some In Love".But great question because it's broad based and gives a lead on some I have not heard yet. Chazz |

Nancy Wilson, live is far and away the most professional, intelligent, and gifted vocalist as I've ever heard. BAR NONE. She's a Queen holding court during a live performance...most have never seen her but I've had the rare pleasure of seeing her on 3 separate occasions. No female vocalist can work an audience like NW. |
Oh yeah check out Deborah Brown.Great American singer who is little known.Find her "Jazz For Jazz: recording with American ex-pats Horace Parlan,Ed Thigpen, and Red Mitchell (take a listen at AMG or Amazon).Had another great LP "Eurboppin'" but impossible to find (almost) on Alfa Jazz.Great singeing, great bands.Shame she needed to make career in Europe and is not known here. Lizz Wright, the deft of lyrical content sung with such heartfelt emotional expression makes it hard not to be moved when she sings. Her latest album "Fellowship" will stir, move and uplift you. All her albums are very good to great. My Favorite is "The Orchard". It is an instant classic that really lets you feel what Ms. Wright is saying. |

Jane Relf - the lead singer for the original incarnation of the group Renaissance, and later the group Illusion (and sister of Kieth Relf). I've mentioned her her before though and get the impression I'm the only one who is so impressed by her. Of those previously named - here are some I really, really like: Eva Cassidy, Julie London,Amy Lee, Lisa Gerrard, Margo Timmins |
TransNova: Linda Rondstadt is a George Massenburg recording-he is one of the best there is. He builds his own gear (I sell it to studios) and it defines "transparent" in pro audio world. Look up his other recordings-all of them fantastic. Like Dawn Langstroth (Anne Murray's daughter), he recorded a lot of live. Look her up on you tube to see George sitting in the middle of the track space mixing. |
