Been reading what’s on everyone’s turntable tonight and got to wondering…what’s your top 5?

My top 5 for tonight from vintage vinyl, all records recorded incredibly well, but linked fines on youtube below are not from my records :)

I will post specific tunes that I like from the albums:

3. Gil Scott-Heron - Inner City Blues (1981) LISTEN

4. Azymuth - Estreito De Taruma (1982) LISTEN

Metallica- Black Album / and Justice for All
Megadeth -Rust in Peace / Peace Sells
Slayer - Reign in Blood /South of Heaven

Michael Jackson - Bad / Thriller
Since I'm seeing a dearth of RB/Soul/Pop, I'll list my top five in this category:

Prince - Purple Rain
Stevie Wonder - Hotter than July
Anita Baker - Rapture

Jazz:
Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth

Dexter Gordon - The Other Side of Round Midnight
Miles Davis - Kinda Blue
Kenny Burrell - Blue Midnight
re RT: he does float my boat on several levels. Lucky to have caught him live in large and small venues alike. I particularly like the Live in Austin TX CD.

There are any number of guitarists, blazingly fast with incredible technical skills that I find boring as oatmeal frappe….I don’t dwell on them, nor insist that you ignore…..

carry on
to paraphrase Traffic “ sometimes I feel so constrained “

maybe that is the point….nothing magic about 5…and nothing magic about starting a top x or n thread alsooo.

i for one have the streamer working overtime with fresh new to me music that others have chosen to elevate…..
Just Like You - Keb' Mo'
Year of the Cat - Al Stewart
Dire Straits - Dire Straits
Moving Pictures - Rush
Live Rust - Neil Young

This is really interesting, cool to see a lot of overlap and variety!!

It’s really hard to choose… This has taken a good 30 minutes of thought :)
My top 5, as of today, in no particular order..

Coil - Loves Secret Domain
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 1 & 2
Future Sound of London - Dead Cities
Extrawelt - Schöne Neue Extrawelt
Download - Effector

kate bush: hounds of love

skye edwards: back to now
pink floyd: dark side of the moon
Only 5 ......Deep thinking required here

GD Europe 72
Pink Floyd wish you were here
Marillion Royal albert hall
Miles Davis kind of blue
Bowie Ziggy Stardust
Should cover most of my moods...but will miss my Genesis, Allmans, Art Blakey on and on....

Funny, I listened to both Thick as a Brick and The Wall the other day.

unreceiveddogma, get a life? I think that's a little harsh for a light hearted conversation but, who knows? I can not see your expression. Richard Thompson is certainly not Jeff Beck. I am far from the only one who thinks he is an excellent song writer although he has not done much of substance for a while. Just not your cup of tea which is fine. I suspect you are just another one of those dead heads who's done too much acid;-)
@tomic601   Our lists have 3 in common--would be a tough choice but i might substitute Van Cliburn and the Chicago Symphony doing Tchaikovsky/Rachmaninoff and I would sub Brothers in Arms for Eva although lacking a female vocalist is tough
The Doors “Soft Parade”
Jethro Tull “Thick as a Brick”
Pink Floyd “The Wall”
AC/DC “Let There Be Rock”
Stevie Ray Vaughn anything with “Tin Pan Alley”
I am glad to see Eric Clapton on rj's list.  This pathetic excuse for a human being (date rape/dead kids falling out windows) Now his preaching anti-vaxism is ghastly especially after Clapton rushed to get his shots!
This is good because now I do not have to burn the few albums with his name on them - it is OK because I never play them - you can come and get them.  Clapton in the top 5?  Nonsense.  Go buy some Zappa, Beefheart, Joni Mitchell and if you want blues, try Buddy Guy for authentic music.  Let me know where to send them.  I'll buy the gd stamps.
not in order, hard to pick'em!

Spiritofradio: put a sock in it, will you? He asked for 5. Unreasonable I know. But we don’t need the Library of Congress.
Mijostyn:

Really? Get a life, will you?

I saw Thompson perform live a couple summers back, at Levon Helm’s place in Woodstock. His son was there performing also.

He did Who Knows Where The Time Goes.
In my humble opinion, he is a great musician and yet his work after Fairport does little to move me.

Music is not just about skill and technique.

Btw, I have a first press copy of Liege and Lief that was autographed by Sandy Denny in the 1970s when Fairport performed at My Father’s Place in Long Island. My girlfriend at the time obtained it in the ladies room during intermission, unbeknownst to me, for a surprise birthday gift.

I’m not really into fetishizing things like autographs, but it was a wonderful gesture by my girlfriend. It sat in my collection for 40+ years, and for some reason I thought: maybe it would be nice to get RT’s autograph next to hers, so I brought it with me.

It didn’t happen. Levon Helm’s staff treated me like I was a leper, … or worse, like a Trump supporter.

Btw, I have about a half dozen RT albums, solo and with Linda. Obligatory, you know?

@spiritofradio.  I like your thought process. I had the same thing going on but kept the list in my notes. Maybe I shouldn't have.

Gato Barbieri.Latin America vol 4. Alive in New York
Wayne Shorter/ Milton Nasceimento.
Native Dancer
Don Cherry/ Steve Lacy. Evidence( all Monk tunes)
King Crimson.......Discipline....plus everything else they have ever recorded
Talking Heads. . Remain in Light.....Speaking in Tongues
And not on the turntable, but streaming on spotify, from South Korea, a modern/ ancient group....Lee Nal Chee. Their entire cd is great!!!

My top fifteen; some are chosen for SQ, some for musical merit over SQ.  No Jazz or Classical here...that would be too tough!

The Band - The Band (their pinnacle for both)
Ry Cooder - Jazz (Paradise And Lunch has better songs).
Jimi Hendrix - Rainbow Bridge (I'd pick Axis for music, but RB has way better sound)
Grateful Dead - Blues For Allah (Side 1 medley takes all cakes)
Little Feat - The Last Record Album (you want bass?)
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame (Apocalypse for SQ)
Joni Mitchell - Hejira (Blue for music)
Van Morrison - His Band & Street Choir (Moondance is better, but SQ lacking)
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet (Let it Bleed toss up)
Rod Stewart Gasoline Alley (I have a Polydor set of his 3 1967-1970 LPs on a clean UK pressing)
Talking Heads - Remain In Light (pure genius)
Junior Wells - Hoodoo Man Blues (best blues album evah!)
Neil Young - Harvest
Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo (has it all)
unreceivedogma, If you hadn't mentioned Baxter's and Sandy you would have been permanently on my sh-t list. Is it RT's dark sense of humor that you don't like? Listen to or watch 1000 years of popular music. Listen to RT play the bass and melody lines simultaneously. Jorma is a brilliant folk guitarist. RT is frigging unbelievable.
