CAN WE AUDIOPHILES DO OUR PART?
I was amazed, and delighted, when I went to the Cardas website to see that they are doing their part. Go to their website and you'll see their director, Angela Cardas, wearing a mask. If you click on the Cardas Nautilus logo in the upper left corner, you'll see pictures of people there in the factory making masks with sewing machines. I called the company to congratulate them, and spoke with a woman named Darla, who said it was their way, during this economic slump, to keep their employees working and also their way of trying to "do our part."
I'm not writing all this to advertise Cardas products. They are a very good company, but trust your ears, not anything I write, when it comes to buying their products. They do get credit, however, for helping me come to a realization that pushed me in the right direction. I called a woman I am friends with, who is 85 years old and is a good seamstress, to suggest she start making masks. She already was--and is. By phone she has organized several other women to do the same, and right now they are needing more material and elastic. I managed to gather about 50 pounds of material and am starting to gather elastic while also getting more material. But I don't sew. I can't help out with that. Any ideas as to what we--all of us who are good with our ears and focused with our budgets--can do to help out in other ways?
I realize this is an odd topic to bring to an audio forum, but it was a very socially responsible audio company that got me to thinking about it, and frankly I believe I should be socially responsible enough to do what I can to get other people to thinking about it. While also being open to other people's ideas about ways someone like me who is "just an audiophile" can help.
Thank you, in advance, for any and all ideas on this.
Best thing we can do is something I did two years ago: Stop buying any product made in China if at all humanly possible. It’s actually easier than it sounds. I previously worked in the manufacturing sector so I’m aware of supply chain issues and how components to otherwise American, EU, Japanese or Taiwanese products may have Chinese-made components in them. |
Social distancing. Many people are not practicing social distancing. They might say they are but they’re not. They might even think they are practicing social distancing but they’re not. I see it all the time. People believe social distancing means keep at least six feet from someone in front of you and six feet from someone behind you. But social distancing means keeping at least six feet from anyone in the vicinity, front, back, left right. Second the 6 feet rule is very arbitrary and something that was suggested very early on in the game. But now we know 6 feet is a bare minimum. No wonder social distancing has been a disaster. Come on, guys! |
Texas. Oh, it’s a scene, man. http://www.valueyourmusic.com/items/233583370827-militia-demo-cassette-super-rare-early-texas-metal-... |
isochronism, "Glubson, they don't want it to go away."I do not really know who is "they" and how they are behind this, but if they announced when it will reemerge, I hope they will give us some hint about when it will go away before it reemerges. Do all you can not to become a person in front of this. It is a lottery and not every ticket wins. Damn they. |
So I have sat for 2 hours to read this thread and found that some posters who I regarded as nuisances, have more sense than those I thought might have better sense. I am as horrified as most reading the COVID statistics in the US and is going to be around for some time. I am as as concerned for the rest of the globe regarding the virus. Interestingly Greenland has suffered the least, but their locale helps. Most of all I wish my best to everyone and stay healthy. ( @glupson How do you approach 5000 posts within 2 years and have have 0 threads started? Just curious... 😜 |
I’m more than a little bit disappointed they haven’t tried playing some Slim Whitman music to se if that kills the virus. It worked in Mars Attacks which I assume was a real event. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work here. They have no imagination. Alternatively they could try what was successful in the case of Noriega who was holed up in a bungalow in Panama and that’s play Ted Nugent’s Cat Scratch Fever at space volume 24/7, which probably would have been more effective had Noriega not liked Ted Nugent, intelligence bungled that one, too. But all this talk about the coronavirus dying out in warm weather and just wait for the vaccine is pure poppycock. |
@geoffkait Granted, but I was referring to the permanently settled continents/countries. Either way, I think we agree that this is not a good situation. I believe that this has a long way to go. COVIT-19 2 or 3 waves or outbreaks to come. Not being US, am I immune to your Presidents gaffs and goofs? He after all is a teddy bear with a non-biological brain. (I saw this in a political cartoon).🤣 His tweets are lame and not researched. He needs a tweet writer! What happened to Ted Nugent? And the Amboy Dukes? I have 5-6 lps of his then nothing. Then Richie Blackmore or Adrian Gurvitz. Not so prolific anymore. |
It's convenient to beat on the US given their "colorful" president, but that in no way changes that Belgium, Spain, Italy, France, UK, Spain and Sweden, so far, have more deaths as a portion of population. Given that the U.S. population is in general "unhealthier" with very high rates of obesity and diabetes, perhaps the microscope needs to be turned equally well on these other countries. |
amg56, ( @glupson How do you approach 5000 posts within 2 years and have have 0 threads started? Just curious... 😜By not taking these threads or myself seriously. Coming here during the breaks at work for some lighter fare and to feel what people out there think. If I had a question that was not already answered, I would start a thread. Sitting for two hours to read this? You are my hero and I mean it. Teflon man. It was not worth five minutes. |
Gee, I wonder how their stock is doing today. I better load up! Moderna, the Massachusetts biotechnology company behind a leading effort to create a coronavirus vaccine, announced promising early results from its first human safety tests Monday. The company plans to launch a large clinical trial in July aimed at showing whether the vaccine works. The company reported that in eight patients who had been followed for a month and a half, the vaccine at low and medium doses triggered blood levels of virus-fighting antibodies that were similar or greater than those found in patients who recovered. That would suggest, but doesn’t prove, that it triggers some level of immunity. The antibody-rich blood plasma donated by patients who have recovered is separately being tested to determine whether it is an effective therapy or preventive measure for covid-19. |

Texas. What did they think was going to happen? Come on, dudes and dudettes! https://apple.news/ATDzdDHFQRpS_qtCe2ZSxWQ |
And as geoffkait proves, 21885 times, audiophiles could do our part, but unlikely would, as they could never stay on topic long enough, and would quickly divert from the task at hand to their personal bugaboo. If you could make the necessary tasks look like a cable discussion, perhaps you may be able to get audiophiles to do their part, just give some of the audiophiles a hammer and a square peg so they can feel at home. |
