I remember some of the videos with him, he was nice guy ...
OMG. I too am shocked. He’s been one of the few current pro reviewers whose opinion was of any interest to me. His writing was full of humour and wisdom, and he was just a damned good writer. I anticipate his disappearance from the mag will greatly reduce the quality of it's content. In my estimation he's irreplaceable, though I know Herb Reichert will try his darndest. He and I to a large extent shared the same taste in music (he loved and played Bluegrass), and the equipment with which to reproduce it (tubes, the Quad ESL, British phono designs). RIP, brother. |
Last week I was watching some Herb Reichert/Stereophile videos on YouTube and one of them featured Art at his home in New York. He seemed very likeable to me (even rescued a big turtle out of the road, lol). I was just thinking this morning about the beautiful countryside shown in the video at and near Art’s home and how I’d like to visit the area some day so it was jarring to see this unwelcome news. Sincere condolences and warmest thoughts to his family and friends. |
Also my favorite audio writer. A couple of years ago, Art and I had a nice discussion about selling my dad's collection of 78's (ultimately I offered to give Art the collection for free, but it never quite happened). I have been a fan since the Listener. He turned me on to lower power, higher efficiency gear, and changed how I think about audio forever. He will certainly be missed! |

If I’m not mistaken Art Dudley went so far as to include an attempt at the photos in the freezer tweak, was it by Fremer? in his review of a couple PWB (Peter Belt) products 5 years ago or so and for that alone he deserves some kind of medal, you know, what with all the potential for angry emails and subscription cancellations. |
