Do you Think Altec model 19 is outdated speakers ?
What's outdated when it comes to speakers? The Model 19 had pros and cons: Pros: sounds great, fabulous drivers, well-made, efficient Cons: large, resonant cabinets (some would count that as a pro), inefficient crossover design w/ fixed slope, c...
Thorens TD124 “Mk1”/Mk2 plinth
@porchlight1 I appreciate you writing all of that down and saving me the trouble. I have a couple of comments: 1. I love the Thorens TD-124 and have rebuild several of them. The thing I liked the least was the analog speed control system (strobe)...
EveAnna has sold her biz
Manley Laboratories sells principally to the Pro audio business. Consumer gear was a sideline and high-end consumer audio is declining as well. I'm guessing that there has been a considerable decline in Pro tube audio gear over the last 10-15 year...
Best Alignment Protractor?
Which protractor and alignment tool is best for you depends on your needs. If you use one cartridge and arm and aren’t looking to change or experiment a custom paper or plastic protractor will work fine. You won’t be able to measure everything but...
Vintage Japanese DD Consult and Suggestions Please
I can't tell you much more than what you read. For some reason, Teac never really marketed these units, which were designed to compete in the same space as the SP-10. I bought one about 30 years ago from a company that had several new units in a w...
Tube Tester
If I had a dealership again or had to test tubes more often I would consider investing in the Space Tech Labs unit.
Vintage Japanese DD Consult and Suggestions Please
@laaudionut I'm chiming in late here. Lots of good choices that you listed and others recommended. IMO any of the tables you listed will sound great and would probably be hard to distinguish given the same tonearm and setup properly. I'll add a fe...
Tube Tester
I've had several tube testers and they all worked pretty well. But they all work and test differently. My problem was that most testers didn't test all of the tube types I was using. I finally settled on a Heathkit TT-1A, based on (but not the sam...
Rega reference belt disappointment
Edwards Audio Blue Belt. They are a component parts supplier to Rega and make a bely under their own name. It's the best belt I have ever used for Rega turntables and Edwards turntables.
NOS EL34 becoming extinct
Most (but not all) EL34 amps can use variants like KT77. Sounds different and whether you prefer it to the EL34 is up to you. I prefer KT77 in my EL34 amps because it's a little bit punchier but YMMV.
Looking for a Tube Guru to help compare a 1948 Farnsworth Capehart 114N2 Phono preamp
As far as I can tell, the Farnsworth Capehart 114N2 was a mono console radio w/ 78 RPM record changer turntable. Do you have the whole enchilada or just the amp electronics? In either case it was a mono only unit and the phono amp section was pro...
Looking for SPU tonearm
IMO, I would probably lean towards the Pete Riggle Woody SPU tonearm. It's wonderfully adjustable. Can you ever have too much wood? But the other tonearms you mentioned are also great. Of the latter my preference would be for the Ikeda, for no oth...
Buchardt e50 reviews
No experience with the new E50s but I do own a pair of A10s. They do exacly what I need them to do and more and they sound great for the $$$.
Analogue front end. You want more weight, scale and dynamics.Where do you start upgrading?
The biggest change to a turntable is always the cartridge. Always. You will need to ensure that the cartridge is compatible with the tonearm and phono stage, SUT and/or head amp. The second biggest change to improve your analog setup is... speake...
Movie/film suggestions.
A Portland-based radio station has a segment called The Score. KQAC 88.9. Nothing but great movie music with excellent commentary by the host Edmund Stone. Airs Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2pm. You don't need to be local, I believe they are...
