Another Day, Another Upgrade.

I have been climbing up the upgrade ladder since 2019 and I may finally have reached the top.....again.

My system before my latest upgrade included a Hegel H390 integrated amp, a Jay’s Audio CDT2 MK 3 transport, Tyler Acoustics Highland H3.5 speakers, Townshend Acoustics Podiums and mid range Audioquest cables for speakers and transport connection. My room is thoroughly treated using GIK Acoustic panels and their recommendations. I thought that was my end to the upgrade process, but alas, no.

I sold my transport to upgrade to a CDT3 MK3 and when I received the new transport it started skipping very soon after I started using it. I had already sold my old one and the new tariffs made it too expensive to get another CDT3 MK3 ordered. I was able to return the defective unit and I did receive all of my money back, including shipping....whew! So, now what? I ended up buying a Bryston BCD3 to bridge the gap while I searched. It was a fine player and I really liked the sound of the Wolfson Chips, but I just didn’t feel like that was my answer. I decided to buy an Esoteric K03XD CD/SACD player. I bought some higher end RCA cables to connect it to the Hegel. WOW! This definitely has what it takes to end my long search. The detail, the sound stage! It’s smooth and is as close to vinyl i have ever heard a CD sound. I am really enjoying listening to all of my CD’s again for the first time! Have I felt this way before? Yes. Have I said, " I don’t know how it could be better than this."? Yes. So here I am with my current "’til death do us part" system and I am once again a very happy audiophile!

Congratulations on your wonderful system and don’t listen to those guys saying get rid of your CD’s. I bought a different streamer last year and it sounds great and I listened to nothing but Qobuz for the last 8 months. Last week, I reinstalled my Transport and have been happily enjoying 2-5 disks a day for the past 10 days. I’m not going to get rid of my Qobuz or Amazon subscriptions,  but I do believe that some of my disks definitely sound better to me than a lot remixed/remastered stuff that they’ve made into 24/192.

All the best.

Congratulation for your beautiful listening room...

Really esthetical, functional with marvellous gear design it seems to me...

@freediver  I have about $3k in treatments. I would spend it again. It made a huge difference.

I have always been a whole album listener. Was concerned when I started streaming, would I do that jump from song to song because of the ease of it. I have found that I continue to listen to the whole album and not jump from song to songs. The only time I don’t is on Friday when they release new albums. It makes me feel like a record producer, getting sent a whole bunch of cassettes to listen to and pick out the one that’s going to get us all rich. 🤑

Going from a 2.5 k transport to one at 17.5 k would likely be a nice upgrade 🤑

I have several hundred CD’s and the ones I own have been vetted to make sure I have the recording with the highest dynamic range. The K03XD does an amazing job of extracting every bit of information from those discs. I also like not having the temptation to not jump around and listen to different songs from different artist. I like the old school ritual of loading up a cd and sitting down and listening to the entire album, deep cuts and all. I don’t think I’ll ever stream music for critical listening.

If you don't mind this extremely invasive question, what was the total financial expenditure to treat the room the way you have done?

Baclagg you have an amazing cd and sacd player. If you enjoy it. Keep it .It will cost you 2 to 3x price maybe for the streamer to beat. A lot of sacd sacd seletions now. My 0.2xents

Congrats. Your room treatment looks great. To echo @ghdprentice, find a way to get out of the CD business. It’s very limiting in terms of materials. Explore streaming and ROON, you will be amazed at what you have been missing. Hi-Res is much better when it comes to fidelity.

Beautiful system. I am sure you are really appreciating the improvement from the acoustic panel.

I'd recommend diverting the money to a high quality streamer. There is no longer any advantage to CDs in terms of sound quality and certainly not ongoing cost. You can equal or best (higher resolution material available on streaming) CD sound with a streamer / DAC at about any level of performance. Also, taking the mechanical component out from the equation should increase reliablity. The only high end equipment I have ever had fail (in 50 years) are CD transports.
