REL Strata III with Paradigm Studio 40 V.2
I am also really surprised that, given the reviews and excellent reputation of the S3/5 and given the somewhat mixed feelings that reviewers have towards the spicas, that the spicas should be so totally superior to the s3/5s (to my ears). I think ...
REL Strata III with Paradigm Studio 40 V.2
Yes ... worse on everything. It may be my taste, or that I'm used to the sound of my spicas but my wife agreed that my big ugly speakers sounded a lot better than the cute little speakers (to her dismay .. she hates my speakers).
REL Strata III with Paradigm Studio 40 V.2
Hmm ... I borrowed a pair of Spendor S3/5 (the latest incarnation of the LS3/5) from a friend for a week, and, while I agree that the REL/S3/5 combination works well, my Spica Angelus speakers sounded much much better to my ears. I was really surp...
REL Strata III with Paradigm Studio 40 V.2
Agree that setting the crossover low is key. I think it is more acceptable to have a slight dip in the bass than a hump caused by excessive overlap (which then sounds boomy).Corner placement didn't work at all for me ... far too boomy. It sounded ...
How to audition subwoofer?
Bob hit the nail on the head. IF you notice that the low frequencies are obviously coming from the sub then the sub is not integrated. It's that simple. If the salesman can't make this happen then I would not buy a sub from them. I also agree with...
Need help with Spica TC-50 / Kinergetics setup
Hey, you're in SF area. If you're interested, and if you're anywhere near Fremont then feel free to email and drop by to hear my Spica Angelus / REL strata setup. It might give you an idea about whether a better sub would fix things.
Need help with Spica TC-50 / Kinergetics setup
I'm afraid that I can't help with the kinergetics. It could be the room ... some rooms just suck out the bass. It could be that your amplifier is running out of power (passive subs must really suck current from a power amp).I do know that a REL st...
Need help with Spica TC-50 / Kinergetics setup
I have found that spicas need to be at least 2-3 feet from rear and side walls and that I have to sit at a distance roughly equal to the spacing of the speakers (I have a 5' equilateral triangle).Only then do I get the imaging ... but wow, what im...
What are electrolytic caps?
1. Capacitors that use an electrolyte (thick liquid) that can leak out of them over time.2. Their capacitance falls if they leak. Since yours are in a crossover this would change the frequency and phase response of the crossover. The amount by whi...
Need help with Spica TC-50 / Kinergetics setup
There is definitely a market for Tc-50s in good condition. I own Spica angelus, and I will not part with them. I am more doubtful that there is a market for your subwoofers. I think you could possibly get $300 for the tc-50s.Spicas excel at imagin...
Its all in the DAC?
It would seem to me that a DAC has two choices:1) Use a PLL and a divider to get the DAC clocking signal from the incoming digital datastream.2) Buffer the incoming data into memory and clock it out to the DACs using its own internal clock that is...
looking for a warm ss amp....
I'm surprised nobody mentioned NAD. All NAD amps I've heard were on the warm side of neutral, and they have some good high-power power amps for around $500. For under $500 you could get a used one and if it doesn't solve your problem, resell it fo...

Allsop technique
I have a planar 3 and an orbitrac and I always use the non-skid pads on the kitchen table because I don't like the idea of putting that amount of pressure on the turntable bearings, and possibly bashing the arm as well. Also I have found that very ...
looking for a warm ss amp....
Agree with DennisJ. If your preamp is mediocre then it doesn't matter how good the rest of your system is.
