Is Sennheiser 600/650 an overkill ?
The Sennheiser 280s are available from musiciansfriend.com for $100. IMHO anything better than these and you'll be listening to the inadequacies of MP3. Even with these $100 headphones you can clearly hear the difference between MP3s and CDs. I wo...
Is Sennheiser 600/650 an overkill ?
You might also consider a closed back (sealed) headphone, to close out background noise, and so that your music is not audible to others. I use the Sennheiser HD-280 pros, and I really like them. A step up from these is the Beyer DT-831 (I think t...
Jumper cables for Dunlavy SC IV / Naim?
although I have never used Dunlavys or naim amps I know that the reason naim amps require use of their own cables is that the amplifiers require a high inductance, low capacitance load (unlike some other amps). However since inductance and capacit...
Guitar Solos
"We will rock you", by Queen's Brian May. It may not be flashy but it fits perfectly with the song.Another fav. is from News from Communique by Dire Straits, one of the shortest M Knopfler solos, but again slots perfectly into the song.
CD transport is making noises....
My guess is that a repair would involve replacement of the whole transport mechanism anyway, since they're usually pretty inexpensive ($30-$40) and would be very fiddly to fix. That said it might be worth making sure you can source a replacement m...
P2 or P3
I'd get the P3 (as a Planar 3 owner). For cartridges I used to use a Rega super bias, but I found a used Linn K9, which sounds better to me. The K9 was not a particularly highly regarded cartridge in its day which makes me suspect that the Rega ca...
Telarc cd's and Mozart's Requiem
I own the Philips / Gardiner requiem and I like the performance, but I would not recommend the sound quality, which is adequate but not spectacular. I think it's an early (1990) DDD recording. You could try it, but I doubt it would be much better ...
Transport Life Expectancy
I'd say about 5 years for an inexpensive transport. However, if you can find out which transport is used in the player you can buy a backup from a company like MCM electronics. For example a replacement VAM1202 transport for a Marantz CD17 (a $1000...
Does "full range" really mean anything?
I agree with Timo, but I have also found that my hearing above 16kHz is quite limited, so I never worry about any HF extension above about 18kHz. On the other hand I think that the LF information (down to 20Hz and below) really helps to recreate t...
Looking for a monitor that likes walls
Any rear ported speaker is unlikely to work close to a rear wall. I think that rules out Epos and Proac. Spendor S3/5s sound good close to the wall, but they have quite limited bass. Linn tukans have a good reputation close to the wall but I have ...
Rel sub cables-Is it worth it to buy custom made
I would think that you would want low capacitance, and you could accept high inductance, since the sub is only interested in high frequencies. Resistance is not an issue as there's very little current. In short I'd think that the REL supplied cable...
which monitor isn't lacking in the bass dept.?
Are you thinking you need a monitor because you don't have the physical space for a larger speaker or because your're concerned about too much bass ? If it's the latter then I'd say that your room looks amply big to accomodate small floorstanders ...
Can a Classic Speaker be better ?
Well my Spica Angelus thoroughly trounced some Spendor S3/5s in imaging, midrange .... everything the spendors are well known for. So the answer is an emphatic yes.
Please help. I have crosstalk...
Sean, I'm guessing that the shunts have the effect of tieing internal PCB traces to ground which will offer some increased decoupling between non-grounded traces ? I can't think of how else they'd work.
Talkin' bout YOUR generation...
I was 11 in 1980. As far as I am concerned there are no defining bands from the 80s, and most albums recorded during that decade make my ears bleed. But growing up in England in the 1970s for me Queen was the defining band.Sometimes I wish I had be...
