Changing to less expensive gear.
I have never done it, but I have demod some very expensive (by my standards) gear in a dealer while waiting for the stuff I had purchased to be boxed, and also because it was quiet at the time and the staff enjoyed showing it off.I don't remember ...
Budget Cartridge Questions
Also look at the Denon DL-110 or DL-160. I have never heard them, but I know many in the UK have swapped Rega Exact cartridges ($400) for these inexpensive Denons and prefer the Denon. Once my old Linn K-9 finally dies I will be getting a DL-110. ...
Trelja- announcement and disclaimer
What a great opportunity. I hope it works out, and look forward to reading reviews of the Fried products.
Sytrofoam peanuts and EVIL and worthless
They are also an environmental disaster ... unless you take them to the UPS store as they reuse them.
Best Integrated for Audio Physic Virgo III?
I have known a dealer who said that the Densen B100 works really well with the virgos. www.densen.dk. It's European so no problem with the voltage, and can be bought in the US from www.audiooutlet.com.I run a Densen with SPica speakers and the ima...
Pros and Cons of Side Firing Woofers
The advantage is that the baffle can be kept narrower than the diameter of the woofer. However my wide baffled Spica Angelus image wonderfully so I'm not sure a narrow baffle is required for imaging, though this is the argument used by those tryin...
Dat recorder verse CD recorder
Sound quality wise they're pretty much equal (DAT has a slightly higher sampling rate .. 48kHz), but is still 16 bit PCM encoded ... just like CD.DAT has the downsides of video tape ... revolving heads are complex and expensive to fix and the tape...
Poor sound from Rega Planar 3
I'd second the recommendation of a new Audio technica at-95e if you want a low cost high performance cartridge. It does sound like your cartridge is worn. the black stuff you see on the tip could be vinyl. If you do get an AT95 get and like it get...
recommend a good computer and digital camera?
I like my Canon A70 ... 3Mpixel (quite enough unless you want to print posters ... and remember that 5Mpixel cameras need a much bigger compact flash card). Inexpensive, simple to use and pictures that look better than my old olympus 35mm on 7x5s....
Cartridge too heavy for tonearm counterweight...
Origin live suggest a cheap fix is to superglue metal washers to the existing counterweight. If you want to try it out first you could use a rubber solution glue, like goop, and then if it doesn't work at least it will be easy to get the washers o...
Digital jitter and disk treament tweak
Audioengr ... do Meridian do this in their newest players ? I know that they use buffers, and they do mention that they use a CD-rom drive instead of an audio CD pickup .. perhaps for the very reason that you suggest. It can't cost more than $20 in...
Is VonSchweikert VR-1 good upgrade from Spica TC50
The angelus doesn't have a whole lot of bass itself, but it does have some. I run my angelus with a REL strata to help out in the bass and it works pretty well. The angelus bass goes very deep, but it's very lean and there seems to be a whole in t...
downgrade question
If you have financial issues then why not buy used ... you'll save money in the long run, especially if you resell when times get better. Epos ES14s would be a better buy than M12s, and I've got to believe a used Audiolab amp would better the camb...
changing speaker impedance
I saw something advertized on this site earlier this week.http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?accstwek&1085873618Not cheap, though. Might try a big resistor first. What amps are not stable at 4 Ohms ?
Is Sennheiser 600/650 an overkill ?
I don't know about others but I can only enjoy open backed headphones in a quiet environment. 600s and 580s don't sound so great when they're competing with a discussion in the cube next door. It was for that reason I suggested closed cans. Also h...
