Our we Lazy?
"Lazy audiophiles who rationalize our own position.....".Perhaps. But, I don't think its that simple. You talk of tubes vs SS based on sound quality as one camp. I think there is another camp which has greater influence on the choice of tubes or S...
Review: Portal Panache Integrated Amplifier
Steve, I'm having the hardest time following your posts re the differences between an active pre-amp, a passive pre-amp and their inclusion into the same case as an amp.At the risk of over simplification, my view is that a passive "pre-amp" consis...
FM Tuner Antenna - what works best?
FM is a line of sight signal. If you've got tall hills you've go problems even if the transmission tower is nearby. Apart from that a good indoor antenna is made by Godar. They are passive and directional. Check them out on Google.
Review: Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Signature Monitors Monitor
Shaqspack, Could you clarify which model of Linbrook floorstander you are talking about? I have the Linbrook Signature system, one piece per side, but I think you may be talking about the rhw new Linbrook System two which has one tweeter, one midr...
Jadis Orchestra Reference
Not a problem. A lot of Eastern European tubes flash on turn on. I have some NOS EI's in an amp that flash. Interestingly there are four of them and they flash sequentially from the left as the current flows thru the curcuits starting at the switc...
Review: Portal Panache Integrated Amplifier
Marco, Re your photography analogy, if I tell you I can take a fairly expressive photo in B&W using an "old" Minolta with a 50mm lense how many Nikons and Nikon lenses can I own before my facination about what I can do with them mechanically, ...
Quad vs. Martin Logan?
Most of what I could add to the original question has been responded to by others, however no one, that I noted at least, has touched on one of the differences between the Quads and some of the others. Quads act much more like point source speaker...
What stole your attention from HiFi?
A 30 ft Owens day cruiser. Beautiful old mahogany wood boat. Restored it from top to bottom. Great adventure. So glad when I finally sold it! I was so tired of driving to the marina a couple of times a month in the winter to check it out, clean it...
Warm interconnects recommendation
Cardas Twinlinks 300B. Not bright, edgy, or expensive. And, IMHO, its good enuf to be a benchmack should you decide to upgrade cabling at a later date.
Bellari VP129 vs. PrimaLuna Internal phono-stage
You might be missing a couple of things if you are going to be using an MM cartridge. The most important thing might be that an outboard phono amp adds another set of IC's as well as the attendant problems in avoiding hum from grounding and cable ...
Jolida JD100 on the way
Nickway, All tubes have an individual sound. How you describe that sound depends much on the associated equipment and how you interpert the tone and other issues such as clarity. For example, I've been listing to tubes for over 20 years. What I co...
How do you deal with vibration?
Eldartford, Re your testing protocol, do you think that generating a 125hz signal is sufficient or would it be more revealing if you were to do a frequency sweep? I've never tried what you are doing, so I haven't got a clue.Pbb, re your comments o...
Warm Tubes
Most tube equipment benefits from being turned off when not in use (saves tube wear and other component deterioration due to excessive heat such as can be generated in tube amps) and a warmup period before serious listening. I've found with my stu...
Loose Veneer, best Fix?
Try some Elmers wood glue - make sure you apply lots of pressure until it cures. If you've got 'em large clamps work well. Cleans up very easily when wet, wipe off the excess after you clamp them, and before it drys. Works for me.
How do you deal with vibration?
rsbeck, There is a difference between sharing experiences when the shared experiences are differing, and saying (or implying) that folks who don't agree with your position are deaf, dumb or blind. The implication of Pbb's last sentence was that an...
