I am not an opera fan...but...
Probably the easiest opera for an opera newbie is Puccini's LaBoheme. This is easily one of the most beautiful, easily assessible, melodic, sad, etc etc opera's, ever. Great duet's. Just turn up the volume and settle in. :-)
Not recognized in their lifetime?
From a view based strictly on recorded performances, Mahler, and to a lesser degree Sibelius, come to mind, especially Mahler, who's music sort of languished until Bernstein started promoting it in the early 60's.
Why "Cryo" anything?
Fishboat, Ah, fresh air in your sails! Leave the polution behind. Wise choice. This is a tough herd. :-)
Most achingly-beautiful music
You can't buy too much music! But FWIW, how embarrassing can it be to be browsing thru a record store and see something thats really appealing, buy it and when you get home find out you have a copy. Been there, done that! :-)
Most achingly-beautiful music
Drubin, HMC901292 "Faure/Messe De Requiem".The other version by Herreweghe with larger orchestral forces is HMC901771. This includes an excellent Franck Symphony in B minor. Both are scaled down from the typical performances and are very enjoyable...
Most achingly-beautiful music
Faure's Requiem, in the original version, by Herreweghe on Harmonia Mundi. This is one of the most intimate, serenely beautiful, and works in the catalog (that I have ever heard). Sounds nothing(!) like the fully orchestrated version, or even Herr...
Why "Cryo" anything?
Fishboat, You may not be an MSE but that doesn't dull your skills at setting forth a very easily read and understood explanation of your views on the subject. Thank you.
how did this happen?
Sounds like you passed some DC from your phono stage thru your amp to your speakers. Not to sound grim but when this last happened to me (for different reasons) I not only fried the speakers I took out some resistors etc in a SS amp which wasn't p...
Why "Cryo" anything?
Lugnut, I've not paid any attention to the arguments about cyro'ing. But your post caused me to be more curious since I generally respect your points of view. As I'm from the uneducated class I don't have to worry about my education trapping me. :...
pls recommend some "entry level" tube amp options?
Another vote for the Primaluna. With your speakers,I might also suggest that you consider saving $250 and getting the Prologue 1 which uses EL34 tubes (which cost about 50% less than KT88's or 6550's). I have this amp - it sounds great. Its full v...
What's your latest "Discovery"
Jazz Singer, relatively new on recordings, Rene Marie. I started out with Live at Jazz Standard on MaxJazz. She has 3 other albums on MaxJazz since 2000. She's the real thing! No pop singer, jazz wantabee crossover. Very highly recommended. Great ...
Is it advisable to have an all tube system?
Well, I suppose that if you are using tubes to provide a tonal cure to a problem with other components or set up and keep buying stuff that errs substantially on the warm side of the spectrum, it could be a problem. But, if you are trying to get t...
Who needs spellcheck?
LOL. Purseanaly I don't need no stinkin spelchekka, what I needs is a gramma chekka!
Headphones versus speakers
Depends what's important to you. If your emphasis is on clarity of detail I couldn't agree with you more. I loved my Stax earphones for exactly that reason. However, if you want to have a replication of a live sonic experience in actual space, wit...
Maybe a dumb question about preamps
Well, here's a dumb question as well. What are you going to connect to this amp? Does it have an attenuator?
