Total newbie question re: headphone amps
Sure, assuming your tape amp has an attenuator. Most do.
why felt?
Sgreen, Is this an invitation to a commercial. If not, why don't you just tell us about the "non-felt" mat. If it is an invitation, don't bother.
Spade on spade or banana and spade?
Optimally, I would use one spade and one locking banana. My experience with doubling up on spades has been that its harder to maintain as tight a connection as you get with just one. Initially it seems OK but they can work loose easier. YMMV.
How do you 'listen' to new music?
Slappy, LOL. I can just picture you trying to get your 'ear' at tweeter highth. By the way, I've heard that this makes for an excellent passive tone control, reduces irritating highs and at the same time greatly increases the appearance of bottom ...
EL 34 vs. KT 88 ---- What's the difference?
Hoosier 1, My 2 cents on your two cents.....I've used every thing in sight on my SFS80, KT90's, 88's, 6550. EL 34's and E34L's. I'm presently using SED 6550's and EI 6922's. Much smoother than 90's and 88's and a bit more life than EL34's. I give ...
Review: Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Signature Monitors Monitor
No damage to amp or speakers will occur. Re the Spendors, they are an excellent speaker. Big difference will probably be in the bass. The Tyler monitor won't go as low but what there is will be a lot tighter, and you may think there is less bass a...
How many audiophiles to screw in a light bulb?
And then there will always be a few folks who won't know what a light bulb is, what it does, or at a mininum how you to define the term before they can get into a dissussion about how to use it. Some of us just have dimmer bulbs than others. :-)
Reading the CD Booklet - A Great "Tweak"
Absolutely agree with you. With many composers having an understanding of where they were coming from when they composed their music can make a huge difference. In my experience most full price CD's do have a booklet with a thumbnail of the compos...
Sonic characteristics of various output tubes?
Varies from amp to amp, but the EL34 based amps usually are a bit warmer in balance than using 6550's, KT88's, or KT90's. EL34's usually produce about half as much power as the larger tubes and they cost about half as much +/-. Of the 3 larger pow...
Do you think you need a subwoofer?
The reasons for a sub with monitors is obvious. More and better bass, when they are integrated properly. For "full range speakers" which only start to roll off at 32hz or below, unless you want to hear airplances taking off in home theater applica...
why felt?
Just for the fun of it, I'm curious....How many of you change the VTA/VTF when you listen to different mats of varying thickness? I suspect some of the differences you hear may be more assignable to the changes in the VTA than the differences wrou...
Your Opinion
Sputniks, You use the terms we and us. You really should only worry about yourself and how you feel about what you are doing and how it makes you feel. FWIW I agree with 4yanx's comments and Aceto's last sentence.
Why are big speakers in small rooms bad?
Many large speakers need distance between the listener and the speakers for the speakers to properly integrate. When you set them up properly, usually well away from the back walls there isn't enuf room left to put the listening position in the ri...
Review: Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Signature Monitors Monitor
60 watts should be just fine in that size room. Do try the 8 ohm taps though. I find my Tylers, even though they are 4ohm speakers, sound better with my tube amps off the 8ohm taps. Much smoother highs(less distortion perhaps?). YMMV.
New Rachmaninov All-Night Vigil Vespers
Drubin, I have not. I have several others but not that one. For me the big difference between the more traditional version (that I have) and this last one, is 'scale'. These are not huge forces at work. Have you by chance heard the St Petersburg C...
