Classical music - starting points
Beemerrider, Don't give up on Mahler. I'm not at all sure that #2 is the best place to start though. The last movement is certainly a big part of this piece's attraction but it sure takes a long time to get there and even then it can seem uneven a...
Classical music - starting points
Rushton, Where's Mahler in your list! :-)Believe it on not, I recently exposed my adult daughter to classical music using my two favorite composers, Sibelius (Sym #4), and Mahler (Sym #6). She found Sibelius bland and just loved Mahler. Go figure!
DOA- do we need to redefine the 'A'?
Traditionally, all used products, not just audio products, sold used are sold as is unless they have been described. When described they must then meet the description made by the seller. That is why a prudent person making a purchase asks a lot o...
tubes or no tubes
Nrchy, From you 4th paragraph I can tell which side of the acrimony you hail from! FWIW, despite the maintenance issues, and they do exist but not to the degree that you suggest, my tubes sound better on their average days than the best SS stuff e...
Classical music - starting points
For someone new to classical music who is serious about getting some exposure to what is available from the different composers which would in turn give them some guidance in what music to move on to, I don't think you can beat the purchase of som...
Better AM reception.... any ideas?
Well, the truth is that most AM sections are mere afterthoughts on Stereo FM tuners and a frequently much less sensitive than a good table radio or your car radio. Additionally AM signals are sensitive to interference and the signal strenght which...
Mono recording question...
Not a stupid question, but why don't you just flick the switch and find out? It may depend on the manner in which the mono signal was transferred to the CD. It might cancel out some noise on the CD from the remastering.
integrateds in the modern age: consensus?
If I were into SS sound I would have an integrated amp provided it had high power and current delivery capacity so it could drive different speakers easily. That way I wouldn't have to buy a new unit if I changed speakers. But I'm not.....I like t...
upgrade ARC SP-8
If you have become accoustomed to the SP8 over a long period of time you may be surprised by what is now available, and you may not like it! With the emphasis over the past 15 years or so on reproduction of detail a lot of the stuff available is o...
If Audio bug never hit you, what hobby might have?
I was lucky, I really didn't have to sacrifice much for this hobby. With the extra disposable income I probably would have bought better equipment for my other hobbies (photography, skiing, old wood boats, and travel) and would have read a lot mor...
Question about speaker power handling
You'll be fine with the 130 wt amp. You can't really over power a speaker but be careful you can over drive it.
Subtlety ? do any American amps do it?
Elgordo, "After owning a few British motorcycles....."Wow, are you a slow learner! :-) Sorry, I couldn't resist.
How Big is Your Music Collection
I've thinned out my LP collection and I'm down to about 500. My CD collection is at about 4500, needs more thinning out, but recent additions have slowed substantially and I've gotten lazy. No SACD's, just redbook.
What to buy
Well despite all of the praise the Lirpa's get, IMHO they are crap! Thats probably why C123666 only recommends them but doesn't use them himself. Dogjeter, Research the Tyler Acoustics Linbrook line. Excellent speakers - direct sales with a home t...
Want to experience tubed CDP?
Jh20s, Re tubes for the Jolida. Have some fun on the cheap by experimenting with new production tubes. The sound will be different and you can pick your own flavor. I would suggest that you try (my first choice) EI's which should give you much cle...
