Popping when source is switched or muted HUH????
I've had this with same experience with things as simple as source selector switches. My techie mentioned something about DC offset.
alternative to speaker stand spikes?
I agree with Jihley, if you are on a budget those hockey pucks can work well. They are cheap and seem to offer a bit more stability (as well as isolation) than cones.
grado reference statement hum
Grado's are notorious for the poor shielding of the cartridge, which in your case is picking up hum from the TT's motor. Used to be a problem for me until I got a TT with a well shielded motor. I've seen suggestions in the past for shielding motor...
LS25&PH3 OR SP-10
These two preamps are tonally sufficiently different to make your choice fairly easy. IMHO the SP10 is more balanced and, if it errs it, it errs on the slightly warm side of neutral. The LS25 is more tonally cool and, perhaps, offers a small bit m...
Volume Level
It could well be a tube in the phono pre- try switching the tubes from left to right etc and see if the imbalance changes.
The most placement forgiving planar speaker?
Drken, Re not wanting to put the speakers more than 2 ft from the rear wall....Don't know about the Soundlabs set up - I'd take Albert's and Duke's word on that issue. However on other panels, or electrostats, 2 feet from a back wall may not be wh...
Why are audiophiles perceived as being wackos?
Well if anyone want's support for the observation that audiophiles are Whacko's look at the "Expensive Cables" thread....'nuf said.
Any vets among the Audiophiles here?
Well, I put in 7 years on active duty, the last 4 were in the USAF JAG at Travis AFB. Nothing very exciting. While I missed the Vietnam war, I just can't express how moved I was when I first visited The Wall in DC. What an incredible memorial! I t...
correct way to turn off tube preamp
Classical1, 85db speakers are not a problem whatsoever for a tube amp with 80wt+ power. The biggest consideration is the impedence curve of the speakers. The flatter the better and the closer to 8 ohms the better. Higher efficency will open up opt...
See it frequently: What exactly is a "troll"?
A troll is a mischievous supernatural creature that lives under bridges in Scandanavia or is an act of fishing from a boat where in you pull a line with bait hoping a fish will bite. I think the latter fits very well with an audio "troll". These f...
What's your latest "Discovery"
For classical buffs, and for any who would just like an outstandingly beautiful, and very assessible violin concerto. Annie-Sophie Mutter performing Korngold's VC w/her husband Andre Previn conducting the LSO on DG. The ONLY criticism I have is th...
Tubes and heat...
Sure, put it all in a closet and the vent the closet to the outside. Done all the time with upscale home theater systems, why not 2 channel audio. Get a small "summer amp". I have a 4 EL34 tube amp, and a Muse SS amp as well, that I will use. Anot...
Audiophile book of "Common Sense"
You covered most everything. What else is there to say? Oh, I know......Forget about using live music as a point of comparison for the evaluation of electrical components and speakers as if it were a goal to be achieved in your home. This is a fal...
Spanish Harlem, by Rebecca Pidgeon, The Raven
Well, one or both of us needs to get a life! You for mentioning it and me for following up to hear what you're talking about! :-)What I heard that was non musical in Grandma's Hands was some very low volume and low frequency thumps. May well have ...
correct way to turn off tube preamp
Classical1, Not to stir the pot, but I can't resist piling on your 'new' discovery of the benefits of a tube pre amp (with which I totally agree!). Wait til you hear a tube amp.......:-)
