Gallo Reference 3.1 questions...
The Ref 3 was named Product of the Year in 2004 by The Absolute Sound. That's product of the year, not just speaker of the year. This followed quite a glowing review in TAS.
Homemade Nitty Gritty Formula
Here's what Harry Weisfeld, the head of VPI, recommended on Audio Asylum some time ago. Take a gallon jar, put in 16 oz. of isopropyl alcohol (NOT rubbing alcohol), then fill it with distilled water and add 3-4 drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid as ...
Affordable interconnect for warm system
If you don't mind spending less money, I would suggest trying the Morrow Audio MA2 interconnects. Very clear, dynamic, with excellent bass and quite musical. With their moneyback offer, you don't stand to lose anything. No affiliation, just a sati...
Building high-end 'tables cheap at Home Despot II
Hey, good for you Gadfly. Your next assignment: Learn to spell his name :-)
Who does not like the Lyra Dorian?
Only heard one once in a system I'd never heard before but it sounded exactly as you describe and the system owners eventually replaced it with a Denon DL-103(!).
How to remove scratches from lidcover turntable
I second the Novus. Takes some time, but can really work wonders. Good luck, Dave
Will adding a preamp dramatically change my sound?
FWIW, I'm using a Calypso too. Great preamp. Dave
Will adding a preamp dramatically change my sound?
Some CD players (e.g., my Raysonic CD 128) sound fabulous through an active linestage and pretty dismal through a passive or straight into a power amp. I would definitely experiment and not prejudge the result. Dave
Can you hear the difference in R2R format
As a general rule, I won't buy any reels on Ebay that are recorded at the slow speed. That said, I do have a few slow-speed tapes which don't sound half bad. It's pretty much a crapshoot in any event, since all the tapes available today (with the ...
Best P-Mount Cartridge MC or MM
That Pickering was available NOS for years via a U.K. Ebay seller at approx. $140. Now he's out of stock, though I've seen them at much higher prices. Maybe Vegasears would sell you his :-)
Best P-Mount Cartridge MC or MM
Funny how two people can get diametrically opposite results, Vegasears. My Pickering TL-2S carts (p-mount) sound so much better than my Grace F-9E, Ortofon OM-30 and various ADC-XLMs that it's no contest at all. I have four of them on mounted on s...
The phase button on my Rowland Capri is for...?
Tvad and Macrojack are correct. A possibly useful hint: I mark the backs of my CDs, LPs and tapes with the "correct" (to my ears) phase/polarity setting, using 0 for "normal" and 180 for "inverted." Saves guesswork. Of course, as you noted, some r...
are phono cables different from regular rca's?
Well, you can indeed use any interconnect if you don't mind the hum. Best that it be shielded.
Advice from vinyl types on a good CD player
For this long-time vinyl enthusiast, the Raysonic CD 128 has been the perfect CDP. Good luck, Dave.
Does Raysonic CD128 need to be on top shelf?
FWIW, I have 10" clearance above mine and it's sitting on 2" myrtle wood cylinders (Waipuna). This translates to a total of 15" between the shelf it's sitting on and the shelf above, but I could get by with 12" if necessary.
