cable burn-in / system burn-in
I agree with Fafafion, though I use a Hagerman FryKleaner Pro. You'll simply never hear what your system can do unless you cook its cables with one of these things. Don't think you can accomplish the same thing by simply playing music -- especiall...
Gallo REfF3's-All their cracked up to be?
I bought mine despite thinking they looked wimpy as hell, especially next to my former Gallo Ultimates. Even ended up co-designing some special speaker bases (just listed them on Audiogon) to raise them 6 inches. The trick to these things is POSIT...
Gallo REfF3's-All their cracked up to be?
Fin1bxn, sounds like they were either undergoing break-in (for the first hundred hours they sound pretty ghastly) or were miswired, intentionally or unintentionally. Set up and broken-in properly, they are anything but congested and veiled.
Gallo REfF3's-All their cracked up to be?
Enjoy them, Mechdude 1. I certainly have, for the past 4 years. When you're feeling really flush, treat them to the Mapleshade bases specifically designed for these speakers. Pricy as hell ($775) but they literally transform the Gallos. As to the M...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lew, I'd love to hear it. Say when. As to the 47 Kohms issue, I've been trying it the last couple of days and been, frankly, amazed. This is with an SS-retipped, Uwe-podded Denon DL-103. The Aesthetix Rhea makes it a snap to change cart loading (v...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
There's an interesting thread on the AA Amp/Preamp Asylum (NOT the Vinyl Asylum) on cartridge loading, where Charles Hansen and Allen Wright are adamant that all LOMC carts should be loaded at 47 Kohms and that loading them down further is essenti...
Suggestions needed for 5.1 surround sound SACDS.
Danmyers, the MCH version employed the back channels in a way that really enhanced the listening experience for me but I'm hard-pressed to be more precise if only because I haven't heard the disc in MC in at least two years. Sorry, Dave
Building high-end 'tables cheap at Home Despot II
Super-density isn't necessarily a good thing. I recently discovered that the ipe (Brazilian Ironwood) armboard I had made from my replinthed Lenco was dulling the sound to an extraordinary degree. Replacing it with an oak (and now purpleheart) arm...
Replacement EL34 Mullard valves for Leben CS300X
I replaced Xf1 Mullard EL34s in my SET monoblocks (where they're used as driver tubes) with the reissue Genalex/Gold Lion KT77s. Supposedly a drop-in replacement for EL34s, these KT77s have been absolutely amazing. Much clearer than the Mullards, ...
Miss my Dunlavy Speakers, Were to go...
I was going to suggest the Gallos but you beat me to it. Good luck, Dave
Suggestions needed for 5.1 surround sound SACDS.
I abandoned my MC set-up long ago and the only album I really miss is Miles Davis' "In a Silent Way."
Mapleshade boards under speakers
Emailists, my experience with the 4" Mapleshade bases and brass footers for the Gallo Ref 3 speakers was diametrically opposed to your view. Instead of killing the sound, they opened it up and made it fuller and richer. and substantially more dyna...
Mapleshade boards under speakers
Emailists, I'm using the Nanomounts (just for the last 10 days) and trying to get a handle on their contribution to the sonics. I think it's positive, but pretty subtle. Note that the ones used to separate the top of the cart from the headshell ar...
Mapleshade boards under speakers
You must have missed my posts. I've been using maple for years because it works better than anything else I've tried under components. And I've tried everything from inner tubes to marble.
How do you remove a tube Key?
You apparently have another problem that hasn't been mentioned -- the tube fitting way too tightly (the key part anyway) into the tube socket. When a key has broken off for me, the the broken-off part has come out very easily -- just insert anythi...
