from Harbeth 30.1 to SHL5+, an upgrade or lateral move?
I've owned the Monitor 30s and the SHL5s and I really think it's a matter of taste.  The 5's have a bigger, fuller sound that some might describe as less "accurate" than the M30s.  The 5's are also more forgiving of lesser electronics, IMO.  Depen...
The "most foolish" loudspeaker tweak/upgrade ... is
Wilson Audio's literature at some point mentioned the importance of the number of turns in the twist connecting drivers.  Take if for what it's worth.
Wilson Sasha 2 or Alexia for small room 10' x 17'?
IMO, in a domestic environment, there is absolutely no way to predict how a speaker will work in the room.  In my own experience, I've had small standmounts with 5" woofers produce a fuller bass response than floor-standers and much larger standmo...
Cartridge for Rega Planar 3?
Goldring Eroica high-output MC.  Good sound, under a grand, works well in the Rega arm and I don't believe you will have to shim.  I think.
Equipment Stand
I have several extra copies of the Gale Maximum Fidelity recordings if you are interested. I think you need to hear them over your Gayle speakers to fully appreciate the experience. The packaging and quality of the recordings is truly beautiful. E...
Components I would have died for when I was a wee pup
B&W DM6 or Dahlquists with a Janis W1 sub.  The dream system I never had.
Cartridge for Technics SL-1200GAE
@chakster,I suggest you read my post correctly before going off on a tirade.  I clearly stated that the Denon WAS a match for the Technics arms, which you agree with.  I also said that nobody knows the specs of the new arms, which you also pointed...
Idiot trying to upgrade his system - likes the tube sound
If you are shopping in the SA10 price range, I think you should get in touch with your local dealer and see what they suggest.  They may be able to assist you in changing a component to bring the system more in line with what you want to hear and ...
Cartridge for Technics SL-1200GAE
Denon 103 was always a good match for the Technics arm, although I don’t think anyone here knows the capability of the new arms yet. You can certainly start with the Denon and move up later. What did the dealer recommend?
Cutting below 80 HZ on my mains, so subwoofers handle deep bass?
I don’t use subs at home, but I did when I did pro-sound. Once you take the frequencies from 100 or 80 out of the mains, it allows them to play much louder without strain and the load on your amplifier is considerably diminished as well. But the t...
What do I need for customs if purchased in Canada & ship to US?
I recall when I bought a pair of Coincident speakers from Canada, UPS called and needed my SS#.  At first I thought it was a scam call, but I was told when anything over a certain value was shipped to the US the Patriot Act, or something like that...
Floor Protection Discs
I would buy the Herbies gliders so you can easily reposition the speaker until you get it dialed in.  Not cheap, but very good. In fact, Jim Smith recommends them for sonic reasons in Get Better Sound.
Speaker cable recommendation for Marten Django XL
I recall reading that Jorma cables were a good match for Martens.  I have never heard them, but I thought I would pass this along.
Evaluating a system - what do you listen for?
I think it's too difficult to quantify in hifi terms.  I want a system that makes me want to sit and listen, as opposed to a system where I get up after 10 minutes and wash dishes or some other chore.  While I have a few bucks invested in my syste...
Recommendations for used CD player
Honestly, I don't think anything for $500 is going to be better than what you have now.  Maybe stretch to a grand and buy a used Cambridge 840c or something like that.  I happen to think the Cambridge players are very good for the money.
