Glare on Choral recordings, classical vocals
Complex music, orchestral, massed voices, etc. is difficult on many systems. That’s why VERY few show demo rooms use this type of music, instead relying on much simpler stuff. The fact that you are getting glare on some crescendos may be due to th...
8K for a one-time listen?
Of course, you could just buy the corresponding vinyl record Devialet offers.  That would seem to solve a lot of problems.
Opinions on Marantz tt42p ?
We know that anyone seriously interested in vinyl reproduction would not own that turntable.
Harbeth SLH5 plus. Top or bottom binding post?
Really - whatever sounds better to you.  You have to play around.  That said, despite the fact that Alan Shaw (designer) believes aftermarket jumpers are nonsense, I found a definite improvement by changing the stock jumpers to Audience AU24.  I w...
Richard Clark $10,000 Amplifier Challenge - Why Couldn't Anyone Pass this Test??
Notwithstanding my personally-held belief that high end stuff sounds better to me, I am willing to concede that some of the claimed superiority I (we) claim to hear in amplifiers or perhaps cables as well is due to the fact that the products we ar...
Has Anyone Auditioned an LKS MH-DA004 DAC?
How do you know the mods improve it if you've never listened to it before it was modded?  Ah, I guess that doesn't matter.
Your Nominations: Top Phono Stages under $1,000
I replaced the Tube Box II, which I liked, with a used Linn Linto. Far better, IMO. Absolutely not solid-state harsh, but more overall realism. And, no adjustments to screw around with. I have had the Linn for several years and have no desire to u...
Best one step liquid record cleaner.???

Apartment Dweller's Paradise - The Ideal 2 ch. system?
Actually I meant the Magico Q1, not the M1.  There is no such thing as an M1.  There is an S1, but it's not a Q1 in price or sound.
Apartment Dweller's Paradise - The Ideal 2 ch. system?
Unfortunately, the ideal apartment system may be modest in size, but not in cost.  I think the best small system I ever heard consisted of the Magico M1s (20k+), Viva Solista (20k+) fronted by a used Linn CD12. Amazingly good.
Richard Clark $10,000 Amplifier Challenge - Why Couldn't Anyone Pass this Test??
Old news - Peter Aczel was saying this in the 80's.  Not worth talking about IMO.  I've owned $25k amp/preamp combos and liked them and I've also used a $200 Onkyo reciever while an amp was being repaired and I liked that too.  Personally, I think...
845 tubes. New not old stock
If you can bias the amp yourself, you have more options, but if not, it's best to stick to what you know works.  I am very happy with the Shuguang 845Bs in my Viva.  A definite step up from the stock Shuguang 845s, which are not bad IMO.  I just t...
2nd pivot for VPI 3D
Different in application, but similar to what Basis does.  Basis put a second bearing inside the unipivot well and use a counterweight with one empty side to balance the arm against the second bearing.  The result is a unipivot arm that looks and ...
Mastersound Compact 845 preamp upgrade
A good preamp can make a huge difference in the sound, but unfortunately, it's impossible to tell whether these differences will be meaningful to you.  Tell you the truth, I had a Mastersound DueTrente a few years ago and it was a nice enough amp,...
DCS Puccini internal wire 'upgrade'
Madness?  Many modifiers have replaced wire inside components with more "audiophile-approved" wire.  The problem is, you never know if you are going to prefer the sound to what's already in there.  If your friend thinks it sounds better, good for ...
