BAT VKD5SE problems reading some cds
Not BAT, but my EAR will not read WMA files, so I know that not every player reads every format.  If it works with normal commercial CDs, I think you're OK.
The Electric Recording Co. ... thoughts on a 300 quid LP
At one point I was contemplating purchasing one of these ERC recordings just to have one, but personal circumstances caused me to change my mind.  That being said, I can't think of anything manufactured with the idea of being collectible has actua...
MMF-7 or VPI Traveler
I think you were smart in investing in a real upgrade rather than the endless sidesteps some people do - basically trading one mediocre piece of gear for another.  I understand that some derive more pleasure from fooling around with something new ...
Need recommendation for a CD player
Outside of price - do you want to play SACDs?  That's an important consideration.
Audio Diversity - What is it?
Very interesting thread indeed.  As a conservatory-trained musician, as well as running a music production company, I think I know what every acoustic and electronic instrument sounds like, both live and recorded.  And, as many of you know, many e...
...a second listen
Sometimes the best way to judge a component is to remove it from the system after several weeks or months of listening.
Manley Jumbo Shrimp upgrade
Unless someone knows a tech who has a tried-and-true proven mod for that particular piece, I would stay away from it.  Replacing parts with more expensive parts may not yield the results you're looking for.  You have a tube preamp, how about rolli...
Linn lip-12
Sound quality notwithstanding, I would never listen with the lid up as the Linn hinges are quite cheesy and I would not want to think about the lid slamming down mid-record, sending the arm screetching across the platter.  Not a pleasant thought. ...
new Cartridge for Rega P1
I would think you could get at least another 13 years out of that cartridge :).  But I personally would just get the Rega Elys and be done with it rather than futz around mounting another cartridge in an entry-level turntable.  It will be fine.
Favorite guitar players not named......
Ralph Wash - Played with Paul Butterfield back in the day. I always thought I was the only one who liked him until I recently found out that BB King said Ralph was his favorite guitarist. Check him out on The Boxer with Paul Butterfield.  The guit...
Does the magnetic levitating platter make all other designs superfluous. No bearings!
yes, send money to some guy in Slovinia.  Good idea.
Octave Audio amplifiers
Put it this way - the Octave did not sound nearly as "beautiful," for lack of a better word, as my Viva. I also owned a Mastersound at one point, which I thought was very neutral-sounding. Some refer to it as "colorless".
Leaving the Naim game . . .
Naimfan - As I don't have to tell you, the 202 and the 252, or even the 52, are not even close.  The preamps and power supplies make all the difference in a Naim system.  As you know.
Leaving the Naim game . . .
Sometimes we can over complicate things and it's gratifying to go to a simpler system.  I've done that myself, coming from Naim gear and then going with a simple Viva integrated.  But it is difficult for me to understand how the Exposure gear coul...
Octave Audio amplifiers
I heard them once.  They are compact and very well-built, but didn't sound particularly "tubey" to me.  While most audiophiles will automatically say they want an amp that sounds neutral, IMO, when someone wants tubes, they want it to sound like t...
