I saw O.A.R. and Train with my 13 year old. O.A.R. was good. Train was meh. Both, though, had horrible sound. Too loud and way too much treble. I've been noticing this more and more lately, the sound guys are making everything almost painful to listen to. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just my area? Maybe they're going deaf and it sounds good to them?
At the last event I went to (that I wanted to 😝), dj spooky was playing and it was way too boosted. I could clearly hear it clipping. I told my friend, who was helping to organize the event and he told the sound guys, but 20 minutes later it was clipping again. The idiots even set a sub on fire. They had to wheel it outside it was smoking so badly.. |
Jeff Lynne's ELO last summer with my daughter (1st concert) at Radio City Music Hall. Next up, Elvis Costello in Charlotte on June 21. Third row, center section. Not as good as my last seats for Elvis--Orchestra pit, 1st row, eight feet from the artists!

Wow! What a treat. Saw Bruce Cockburn last night at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch. It was a great show by a great artist. Super simple setup consisting of one amplified acoustic guitar and a stool in a 200 seat concert venue. If you are not familiar with Fur Peace Ranch, take a look via the link below. Fur Peace Ranch is primarily a guitar camp, run by Jorma and his wife with rotating guest guitarist/instructors. Unfortunately, I don't play. But I can dream.......... https://furpeaceranch.com/ |
Would be if they were . Try Scotia . |
That's too funny. I go to the Egg more often than all the others, and forgot about it. I've enjoyed many shows there. Ray Manzarek/Robby Krieger, Gregg Allman solo, Beth Hart, Keb Mo.... Great venue. Proctors these days is mostly all plays, but they do have an occasional concert. I'm 51, and If I live to retire, it won't be in Albany. The price of civilization in the Carolina's is much more civilized. (-:
|
Taxes are rough, but could be worse , west of Albany Upstate NY pays taxes on NYC level with rust-belt wages . But as they say taxes are the price of civilization . Proctors is 'da bomb, love that place . |
Don't leave out The Egg. Not a bad seat in either of the theaters in that building. And you're correct about both the taxes and the weather. We had early spring two days ago, late spring yesterday, and summer for today and tomorrow. Maybe it'll snow early next week.... |
schubert- Indeed Cohoes Music Hall is still going. We have Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Proctors, The Palace, and SPAC for the summer months. Capital District is pretty good... If I move, I won't miss the weather or the high taxes. But I digress (-:
|
Brian Wilson, Pet Sounds tour, May 13 at Moody Theater, Austin. His voice is far from what it was, but the band was very good and it was a great evening with a couple of magical moments.
|
Glad to see Cohoes Music Hall is still going, lived a few blocks away at one time , Capital District is one of USA's best kept secrets . |
Timothy B Schmit and his band at Cohoes Music Hall. Very good show.
|
Saw Buddy Guy and his blues band last evening...
In a word...S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R !!! Do yourself a favor and go see the man/legend...you can thank me later for the heads-up... ;^) |
Treefort music festival in Boise Idaho a couple weeks ago. 5 days of nonstop shows all over downtown. A mini-SXSW. I saw dozens of bands. Personal fave was Jonathan Richman, who played the mainstage on Sat afternoon to a smallish crowd (I've seen him I bet 7x live). Lizzo played that nite to a giant throng and very loud PA system, so loud I listened from the street. Flaural I saw randomly and was impressed; shoegaze trance stuff, real good. Every March in Boise, it's worth the trip.

Saw Richard Thompson last night at Memorial Hall in the Over the Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati. Wow! What a venue. The beautifully renovated 1908 Theater is a fantastic place to see a concert. Beautiful room, great sight lines and excellent acoustics.
Richard Thompson was outstanding. It was a solo acoustic show. Richard's guitar playing was outstanding and his lyrics and singing always pull you right in. Authentic! |
"The Midtown Men" in a sold out venue in Buffalo last Saturday
sensational! |
Bryan Ferry @ Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady NY on March 30th.
He's still got it. |
John Prine, Hershey PA, last Friday. Great as always. |
Seeing Richard Thompson tomorrow night at a small theater in Cincinnati. I have pretty high expectations. Hope its good...... |
Saw the Yardbirds on Sat. with Vanilla Fudge and VF were very good but the Yardbirds were spectacular! Only drummer Jim McCarty remains from the originals, but the other "birds" played as if they wrote this stuff. Spot on vocals and feedback. Highly recommended! |
Tony Bennett March 5 Dr. Phillips Center Walt Disney Theater This man is totally amazing and a sensational performer, a most memorable evening.
|
St. Paul & The Broken Bones @ The Egg in Albany NY. Quite an evening. |
I saw Maria Schneider and her band last night at the Kennedy Center. Wonderful. |
Several years ago I saw shows by Pat Martino, Larry Coryell and John McLaughlin. Larry is sadly now gone. About a year ago (or 2?) I saw Pat Metheny again and sat about 5 feet away.
|
Dionne Warwick, last night, Kirby Center, Wilkes-Barre PA.
|
Dweller & Reubent / Thank You |
I saw Shovels and Rope again last night. All I can say is WOW! I've seen hundreds of shows spanning 40 years. I've seen most of the top bands in the world, many in their heyday, and I can tell you that the Shovels and Rope shows I've seen are in my top 10 of all time. Maybe top 5. This duo puts on one heck of a ROCK show. You would likely never know they could ROCK if you've just heard their studio recording. I like their studio stuff, but the way they perform them live is a totally different thing. They come off the stage at the end absolutely drenched in sweat, having given everything they have to the audience.
My highest recommendation. And only $20 at the 1500 capacity theater where I saw them last night. |
|
I saw Queensriche at the Beacon Theater in Hopewell, VA! That's right, Hopewell! This little theater has been booking some huge acts. And Queensriche was amazing, what a great show, and I could see the entire stage from the 3rd row. First show I've seen in years, and believe me, their new singer never missed a note! As great as they ever were. |
Ricky and his band are great live. I saw him and them, along with Rhonda Vincent (fantastic!) and Junior Brown, a few years ago. Quite a bill! |
Rickie Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder

@boxer12,
I'm truly sorry to hear about your loss of a great friend. Hopefully, sharing a final excellent music experience with him is a memory that will live on with you for a long time..... |
@boxer12 - Sorry to hear about your friend. Good friends are very hard to come by.
|
Umphrey's McGee in Grand Rapids Mi. earlier this month. First time I've seen them & it was an excellent show. Had a great time. Not to be a downer but went there with a good friend of mine who unfortunately died a few days ago. He was an old hippie (like me) & over the years we went to many shows together. Fortunately he lived a full life & died in peace. I will miss him greatly. |
fjn04,
I would love to see Beth Hart. I hope she teams up again with Jeff Beck or Joe Bonamassa. Would really like to see that (especially with JB).
|
Beth Hart- last night in the Albany area. I highly suggest checking her out, if she is your thing. She was really great!
|
U2. Would recommend highly.

We've got a lot of good shows coming up in Cincinnati this spring. I'm holding tickets for
Shovels and Rope Pixies Dave Mason Adrian Belew Bruce Cockburn
Hope I can make it to all of them. Pixies are looking questionable due to a family commitment.
|
King Diamond last year, Aragon ballroom!
best stage show next to Alice Cooper.
Now, those two together on stage, putting those minds together, would make for a fantastic show/stage show.
Oh please, please let it happen , and let me have the time to go |
Paul McCartney Aug. 9 in Washington D.C.. My 5th time to him and as always he was great. |
I've had a pretty good week. Heard "What's so Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding" and "Allison" twice this week!
Oct 17 - Elivs Costello at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville
Oct 19 - Nick Lowe at The 20th Century Theater in Cincinnati |
Last Friday, Jerry Douglas in Portland Oregon. There are two main strains in Bluegrass---Traditional, and Progressive. Jerry as a sideman (Alison Krauss, Iris Dement, Dolly Parton, hundreds of others) is involved in the Traditional wing. As a soloist/bandleader, he is more Progressive. While his dobro playing was fantastic on Friday, I didn't like his band or the music very much. There were no real "songs", just some chords strung together to give a structure for the instrumentalists to play off of, know what I mean? The band was too jazzy for my taste, the guitarist playing in "flurry of notes" style---no phrasing, no lyricism, no elegance or poetry. The drummer, though very accomplished technically and fairly musical, was way too busy for my taste, to the point of distraction. That's just my taste though, admittedly. I'm all about songs, and playing for them. I also love Bluegrass harmony, of which none was heard that night. A big disappointment, unfortunately. Still love Jerry's playing though! |
Oct 7-9 -- Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, The Who, Roger Waters in Indio CA at Desert Trip
|
AC/DC in Columbus Ohio about a month ago. It was a reschedule date from this spring . Axl did a hell of a job BTW..... I wasn't disappointed at all! |
This past weekend The Peter Karp Band. Bluesy/rocky/twangy music from a talented trio at a newish venue in Woodstock, GA, Madlife Stage & Studios. I knew and liked Peter from the two releases he did with Sue Foley. Great music and venue! |
Dark Star Orchestra in Grand Rapids Mi. on 10/02. Every time I've seen them they have put on a great show. Last night was no exception. |
swampwalker, mizike,
John Prine and Lucinda Williams - two of my favorite live artist. I'll go see them every time they come around. |
The last two concerts I have been to have been Lucinda Williams. Both at my favorite venue, The Stiefel Theater in Salina Kansas. I would go again tomorrow What an amazing song writer and performer. Her band is topnotch as well. Will see John Hiatt on Sunday in Wichita Ks. I'll let you know soon. |
Yusuf Islam fka Cat Stevens at the Beacon Theater NYC on Monday magical |
Ah yes swampwater, the dying art of subtly and taste. It's what separates the men from the boys. |
