OK, case solved. Looks like my copy of "Pet Sounds" is the 2008 Capitol Records reissue. Really nice copy. Made to be an identical copy of the original 1966 release (except on 180G vinyl). Nice presentation of the materials.

@alan60 +1 Shellac, nearly everything Steve Albini is associated with is worth a listen. |
@boxer12 +1 Tortoise, another often overlooked band. |
@puffball08 Steve Albini productions always have a live vibrant quality to them. |
For removing price stickers from LP covers, I've long been using a product named Bestine, which is sold in art supply house (like Michael's). It is formulated to dissolve rubber cement and other glues, and does so without discoloring or otherwise damaging LP covers. Better than Goo Gone or other similar products. |
Thanks @bdp24 Good to know. |
@tomic601 I’ve removed scores of stickers from album covers with my very precise heat gun. Last night, a senior moment of neglect had me attack a pretty stubborn son of a b. With the record still inside. Needless to say, it’s bye-bye dimple time.. Out of annoyance and guilt, I bought a new copy. |
@noromance +1 Flight Log, coincidentally just pulled it to play today before seeing your comment. While generally not a fan of "best ofs", IMHO it plays like these songs always belonged together, perfectly sequenced. @tomic601 kudos on the scratch pies! Cornbread is in my queue. I'll stream Alice's Restaurant while I make it. @here Please consider playing my Holiday Music Challenge. Everyone knows the most passionate music lovers are in this thread! |
@sbank Wow! ++The Feelies, another overlooked jem of a band that really has withstood the test of time. @alan60 Yes, Albini is a very adept engineer in his own right and working in his, or anybody's studio, Steve puts his ample talents to good use. @boxer12 Oh my, wouldn't that be nice if Cale's "HoboSapiens" were to appear on vinyl. This would be a nice addition for a "curated" label like Numero Group or Superior Viaduct. But, EMI (or whomever owns the publishing rights) might not be easy to deal with. Happy Thanksgiving (if you're in the States) to the group. Don't overeat now.....as I'm daydreaming about the cheesecake I baked last night that didn't collapse for a change😂 |
@bkeske You're inspiring me to pull classical LPs, thank you.

+2 on the Feelies. Their first four albums are all great, and the comeback albums aren't bad either. Love "The Good Earth" especially!
+1 on James McMurtry. I have been looking for Too Long in the Wasteland for years, but it has been next to impossible to find one in decent condition. I was bidding on one on eBay a few months ago but dropped out when it got to $75. Then, a few weeks ago, I was in Fort Wayne, IN, for a wedding and stopped by the Wooden Nickel, where I found one in mint condition for $4.99. Score!
Now Playing: Peter Laughner, The Smog Veil box set
Happy Thanksgiving, vinyl spinners!

+1, amazing collection of music from Peter and other musicians who would go on to join the likes of Pere Ubu and other Cleveland bands. Sad thing is it looks as though Frank (Smog Veil) has sold out of the box set. And even more distressing, Frank has decided to retire the label after 30 years. So much amazing music from NE Ohio was showcased because of Smog Veil. They will be sorely missed. Evidently this is all that remains: https://www.smogveil.com/collections/all |
👍🏼 Enjoy. I bet that Bartok with Reiner is excellent!
Happy Thanksgiving all. Just arrived at my moms for the next day and a half, so no music for me unfortunately |
I also really appreciate this thread and all here who participate. It is the rarest of threads--one that is not only unfailingly congenial, but actually focuses on music instead of constant gear-churning or pointless debates on which (or whose) is better. So refreshing, and such an up. Thanks to you all, and Happy Thanksgiving. |
+1 Great tradition. I'll dig out "Honey In The Horn" (1963) and marvel at how Al could play "Lava" on his horn with one hand! Spinning a few discs before the eat-a-mania begins. 801 Live "s/t" Island UK 1977 Family "Bandstand" United Artists 1972 Rowland Howard-Lydia Lunch "Some Velvet Morning/I Fell In Love With A Ghost" EP 4AD 1982 Los Microwaves "Life After Breakfast" Posh Boy 1981 Go•Go's "beauty and the beat" IRS 1981 One can criticize the GoGo's for many things but few pure pop bands starting out, then and now, wrote their own material. |
+++ @puffball08 my faded recollection is i had an MTV crush of sorts on them… War Dept. informed me the other day that they still play out…. |
@sbank love that McMurtry record! but I am also in a never ending search for a vinyl copy. Feat-Time Loves a Hero 2018 Speakers Corner Feat-Hoy Hoy Hoy 1981 WB Big Star-#1 Record 2020 Craft Recordings |
Steve, yeah, it's not great sonics. That's the only one of his I have on vinyl, even in TX they all are very hard to find. I look for his LPs during every LRS visit, and always strike out. The one I found was in NJ, lol. The best McMurtry recordings I have are live SBDs. Chris, from same sources as the Big Stars I shared with you a few years ago ;-) |
