James, I don't care how many times I have listened to "I Robot", that album is still one of my all-time favorites, both musically and sonically. I have an original pp issue and I also have a UHQR issue, both in perfect condition. The UHQR copy is #664 of the master stamper, pressed in April, 1983. The box includes a "UHQR Certificate Of Authenticity", signed by the President of Mobile Fidelity. Way cool, and sounds phenomenal. It's worth a small fortune (last I checked, around $500), but of course, it's not for sale. |
@bkeske, yes. I think you’d like it. You’re probably already familiar with the composer but I might describe this piano work as heavily influenced by Beethoven and also sounds kind of like Chopin. It’s not an expensive issue, has a great cover, decent (but not stellar) SQ, and it’s very nice, rather energetic but symmetrical music. |

Found it in NM condition pretty inexpensive, and the seller had two other offerings on my ‘want list’. Cha Ching. |
James, I also have the "Rhymin Simon" album, bought it new in 1973. It's excellent! Your question on the SQ of my "I Robot" UHQR pressing. The sound is slightly tilted up, a signature of the times. However, not at all bombastic or obnoxious. And the overall depth, imaging is a definite notch above the standard pressing. The vinyl is exceptionally quiet, which was one of the hallmark traits of the UHQR series. It is truly excellent! I wouldn't pay the going price for it (around $500 and up) but I am truly happy that I got my copy when it retailed for $50 and paid only $35 for it. 😃👍 |
Joel, That is a record to be treasured. I only wish I’d made MOFI, et. al. more of a priority during my life. Still somewhat playing catch-up on long wished for records but coincidental to the vinyl frenzy I’m now priced out of many of them. I do need more focus when it comes to record acquisition and friends here on the thread certainly help with that. Do especially enjoy finding bargains but of course that’s getting harder all the time along with the exponential growth in prices. Can’t say enough how much Paul Simon’s music has meant to me. However much I loved TGRS as a kid I don’t think I realized just how good it sounds. I mean, Something So Right” one of the best test tracks you might imagine and it’s on a very commonly owned album. |
Is there an individual record you would pay $500 for? Electric Recording Company maybe? An OP RCA? A Beethoven Concerto? A Pink Floyd Record? Never say never but really… I think the most I've paid for a record was for the MFSL 45 RPM The Nightfly by Donald Fagen. Still sealed, #247. Not quite $500, but close. Discogs prices start at $500 for that one now, so I know I could always make money on it if I decided to sell it, but I won't. Unless I need a new liver or something. I'm getting my new turntable today, so that may be one of the first things that gets played once I have it all dialed in. |
