@spiritofradio I just received the Deja' vu album. Atlantic/Rhino, as noted on the paper insert, and as you had indicated. What a beautiful total presentation of packaging. I also received a new copy of Talking Heads, 'Speaking In Tongues'. I'll put these through the Degritter and thoroughly enjoy.
My wife is leaving tomorrow morning with her cousin, going to Las Vegas for 2 days. Have fun! I'll be spinning vinyl for a very significant portion of those 2 days.😊 |

“are you up here ??? Pac nw ?”
I wish, but SoCal. We have friends in Surrey and Squamish, BC. If Trudeau carries through with the idea of allowing vaccinated US residents entry into Canada without quarantine, we may be coming up in the fall.
If only we’d bought the cabin near Squamish years ago….. |

On the wives subject we had a lot of the same interests growing up with the music from 60’s and 70’s that she still likes but her tastes now lean more towards top 40 stuff like Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars that she primarily listens to with ear buds at the gym. When I’m listening to music she will come into the room and sit down for maybe 15 minutes but that’s usually about it. She has other interests which is fine. We had dinner with a few friends this weekend and after dinner we will usually head to a music room for conversation and good music. I was playing Natalie Merchant’s Ophelia and mentioned that we had seen her in a small venue on her Leave Your Sleep tour and what a great show it was. My wife’s comment was that we had to sit on folding chairs. As Steve Earle would say. Nuff said. |
@tgilb my wife and i both adore Natalie, her birthday we caught her in San Fran at the Warfield….freaking awesome
hope they play Bleezers Ice Cream at my funeral…. from Leave Your Sleep….

Natalie is definitely one of my favorites and I would love to see her again if she were to tour.

@boxer12 Tim, did you get the Domino re-release of "m b v" or the original self release version from 2013?
I rather accidentally ended up with an original 2013 version in a gatefold jacket which contained the vinyl plus the CD.
The interesting thing is, in the liner notes, Kevin Shields went to the trouble of listing both the mastering engineers, vinyl and digital.
Kevin's intent with this version appears to demonstrate the difference in sound when the original 2" 24 track analog master tape (they recorded on a Studer A827) was mixed down then mastered separately for analog vinyl and digital CD.
Listening to the 2 versions of the same material is quite educational.

+1 Chris Whitley+1 SonVolt |
Big +2 to Son Volt. I was going to spin American Central Dust yesterday myself but my listening time was reprioritized. It’s on the TT now. Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, and Wilco were a big part of my favorite music in 90’s. Along with The Jayhawks, Whiskeytown, Steve Earle and Dwight Yoakam among others. Americana really hit home. |
++ on Sun Volt ++ on Chris Whitley
Currently holding tickets to see Son Volt at Cincinnati's Ludlow Garage. 325 seat venue...... |
Have their latest lp on preorder. |
Blue Rodeo - Tremelo fits that North Americana mold…. |
+1 Blue Rodeo Tremolo. From the late 80’s to late 90’s I have always thought Blue Rodeo was one of the best mainstream rock bands. "Five Days In July" IMO is one of best pop/rock albums(all genres} of the 90’s. |
++ on Blue Rodeo also. And while we’re talking about Canada let’s not forget about Cody Canada (from Texas) either. |

First LRS buy in 16 months and wouldn’t you know, it’s a bit noisy. Two long cleans in the US helped. Sticking with discogs in future.

Turk Murphy And His Jazz Band – At The Roundtable (Forum 1959 mono)
Entertaining and historic. Magic female vocalist version of the Jimmy Cox classic, Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out. Solid recording. Makes me smile. |
Puffball, I have the Domino release of MBV on vinyl. Do you know if there is a big difference in sound quality between the Domino & the original release?

Puffball, I'm not blown away by the sound quality of the Domino release. The music itself makes up for that though :-) That stated, although IME, Domino is typically very good, can't say it will be better than the original (haven't heard it).

Several good albums from later afternoon into the evening. With a halibut steak done on the Traeger grill, in between sets. Yum!
Neil Young 'After The Gold Rush' The other Neil Young reissues are very good. This one is terrible. Very warped and sounds lousy. Back it goes.
Joni Mitchel 'Blue' Reissue, last year. Sounds excellent!
Tears For Fears 'The Seeds of Love' I got this a couple of weeks ago. Very good 80s album, I thoroughly enjoy it. Good SQ but very much the "wall of sound".
Jennifer Warnes 'Famous Blue Raincoat' Outstanding limited edition reissue, mine is 825/1000. Blue vinyl, only 1,000 copies made from Jennifer's personal analogue tapes. What vocals! What sonics!
Talking Heads 'Speaking In Tongues' Finally came off of backorder, since January. Made in Germany, this is by far the best sounding of all of the Talking Heads albums. Great music, no doubt, but also the best recording, mixing, mastering/plating/pressing on high quality vinyl of the bunch. Very flat and very quiet. I believe there are still some available. If you don't already have this one in your collection I highly recommend it, for all the right reasons. Just stunning!
|
I forgot to mention, the Jennifer Warnes album is on Impex label. Anything you can get on Impex, get it. They really do everything very well. Superb production quality. |

Starless & Bible Black / ST They named their band after the album? |
@big_greg +1 Adventures in Utopia
|
Thanks to all who recommended Blue Rodeo. Somehow I completely missed this band. Streaming 5 days in July right now... wow.! On that line about music we heard on our lousy car stereos. Poco Good Feeling To Know on 8 track I stuck in the glove box of my 66 Olds 442. Thought that record would make them huge, but never happened. |
@spiritofradio, Starless & Bible Black / ST “They named their band after the album?” It’s the reverse, the artist/band just uses their name as the record title. |
@puffball08, no you missed my point entirely. You’re right - its an eponymous album of course but the bands name is the same as the name of the 1974 album by the Progressive Rock Band, King Crimson. (Which incidentally is my favorite by them) Turns out though (to answer my own question…) I was reminded from articles about the band on Pitchfork that the phrase is from “Under Milkwood” a well know poetic radio play by Dylan Thomas. Something I really should have remembered.
So, I guess I should have posed my question as “after the King Crimson Album”. Either way, it’s a great little (well named) English group that I’m glad to have learned about from my friend here.
|
@flennon, Thought that record would make them huge, but never happened.
wouldn’t you say though that 1978’s “Legend” did make them huge? At my college I don’t think there was a guy with a stereo that didn’t have that record… |
