i think @slaw has a pretty sure fire flattening process…also try an enzyme cleaner for a couple of cycles…the enzyme takes time to “ eat “ the goop, so give it time WET. i have had good results w both Nitty Gritty and Walker enzymes.

i deleted a post seeking a free or nearly free Decca London so i can properly culturally indoctrinate the Croft phono pre…..

just kidding…who knows…?
@tomic601 thanks for the tips. I’ll check with @slaw about flattening. I’ll look into Nitty Gritty and Walker to try and rescue my termite terrorized records.

@big_greg Understand about leaving the shrink wrap in place if it is stickered up. However, nearly all what I listen to lacks anything other than a price sticker. And that has been an experience seeing $5.99 records from 1975 ($29.97 adjusted for inflation) and $7.99 from 1979 ($29.63 adjusted for inflation). Not to mention all the record stores that have gone away like Aron’s, Licorice Pizza, Moby Disc, Zed, Play it Again, Tower, etc. etc.

Considering what I’ve been paying for 12" lately, seems vinyl prices corrected for inflation haven’t changed much over the decades.

Many records I’ve received lately from Bleep and Rough Trade UK have been sent without shrink wrap with the record outside the jacket in a thick (3 mil) anti-static inner sleeve. Both the sleeved vinyl and jacket are placed in a thick (5 mil) outer jacket.

My crystal ball says there’s an Orb in my future.

@puffball08  @big_greg,

Be glad to give you all some tips on using the ORB if you decide to buy one.
@slaw - Please do reveal the inner secrets of the Orb.  I pulled the trigger today.
Puffball,
Bummer about the "Pere Ubu" album cover. Hopefully the Orb will clean up the vinyl!

Now this, for good or ill, sounds just like the sound at concerts I’ve been to lately, well before all this lockdown anyway.  And the talent and live energy of these players - whew!
Speaking of Jason, I ordered the  Cooley, Hood, Isbell  Live at the Shoals, 4 lp box recently. Hope it's sound is as good as the Ryman set.
Please do report on that SQ Steve, my sense is Jason is one of the top ten songwriters today…

@puffball08,

Prior to buying the ORB, I had over 4 years experience with the VinlyFlat in it’s two "pouch" iterations. So I was familiar with the process. My ORB is the DF-O1iA.

It’s important to get the lp as clean as possible first. I place the lp between two pieces of felt that I cut O.D. 11.5" and the spindle hole 1.25". Doing this allows any lp that is thicker around the spindle hole to lay flat and any lp that doesn’t have a flat profile (outer rim) to lay flat as well. The felt I have was purchased with the VinylFlat.

In spite of the directions ( I learned the hard way not to keep it in heat mode for two hours), I always use the unit on the low setting. Always let the cooling cycle go the complete two hours.

All vinyl is not created equal, so there will be a learning curve regarding how long to let the heat cycle go. As a general rule, thin vinyl or colored or clear vinyl, I put in for 60 minutes. If it isn’t enough, you can always try again with additional time based upon how the warp looks. If still warped, increase another 10 minutes.

For heavy vinyl, use the heat cycle at 1 hour and 15 - 20 minutes.

That’s pretty much it. As I said there will be a learning curve. Enjoy!

@slaw- thanks very much for the tips on using the Orb.

The one I will receive is a DF01iA+.

I will post reports about how it works.  I have plenty of candidate records with varying degrees of warp ready to test.  All have been degritted and await their chance at a flat life again.
I'm getting close to the end of the journey through all my Johnny Cash records - Ring of Fire The Best of Johnny Cash.  This is a stereo version, and I also have a mono version.  Both sounded great, not sure if I'll be able to part with either one.
@puffball08 I've been thinking about getting an Orb also.  During the height of the pandemic I was ordering a lot of vinyl from my local record store's Discogs site and picking up curbside or having it shipped.  I got a lot of warped records.  They have an Orb and have flattened a number of records for me and they come back flat and play great.  They said they have had bad luck with colored vinyl, but maybe they "cooked" them too long.
Last night,

Where's Brian?

I’m here Steve, just been very busy. Late days/evenings/nights of work recently.
