My friend Greg discovered this when we were in 9th grade together. We knew so few bands then that played heavy music so finding Budgie was a major event. |

Tears For Fears 'Songs From The Big Chair'
Thompson Twins 'Into The Gap'
Emitt Rhodes 'Mirror'
Bloomfield/Kooper/Stills 'Super Session'
Benard Ighner 'Little Dreamer Oh my, what a voice! |
Thx spiritofradio! My copy of Jail Break is VG+(vinyl) a garage sale find. Had to toss the damaged moldy jacket. The vinyl was just scuffed no real damage just a cloudy finish even after a spin on my Nitty Gritty. Not a bad sounding recording(4.2) but a near mint original copy could raise it to another level. |
@dayglow Jailbreak CD was on the system (decent actually for a record store- why are they usually so bad? Don’t they realize that they would sell more records if the sound in their stores was better?) at my favorite LRS evening before last (scored the Tucky Buzzard Box Set) so had to play it after we got home. The CD must have been remastered because it didn’t sound like my record at all. Way more midrange forward and far less grunt and growl. Less bite on the lead solos. It was still sweet to hear it in public like that though and sweeter still to crank it up back on the home horns. My copy is from high school days but is in surprisingly great shape.
you know, there are statues of Phil Lynnot in Ireland. I’ve never been there but my rocker brother has sent me photos. |
My yellow vinyl copy of Montrose just showed up today. So did my Herron Audio VTSP- 360 pre-amp. Sounds amazing! |
Call it a halcyon day @Big_Greg. Nice. |

New Order - Technique (Factory), UK 1989. Lol Creme and Kevin Godley - L (Polydor), USA 1978. Luka Productions - Fasokan (Sahel Sounds), USA 2017.

Spinning Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks. It’s a repress from the mid 70’s that I bought at that time and not an original pressing from 1968 but still very nice. He was right on target using all acoustic instruments for this album. You can hear the plucking of the strings on the Double Bass throughout the album and especially on Madame George. Just incredible production. Definitely ranks in the top ten of my all time favorite albums. |
Greg,
Congrats on the new Montrose vinyl. Oh, and the Herron...... |
James,
My older sister turned me onto Budgie back in the '70's when I was a pre/early teen. I have no idea where she heard them, but she hung out with a bunch of long-haired rocker types, so........ |
@spiritofradio Hey, did you check Vol. 9 of your big yellow Solti boxes I think there's one in there. I have 6 & 10 James. 9 is on my want list. And yes, I checked those first 😉 |

Set Fire To Flames / Sings reign rebuilder This is certainly freeform experimental music. Musicians from "Godspeed You! Black Emperor" & "Silver Mt. Zion" formed this band in the 2000's. |
Thomas Dolby - The Golden Age of Wireless. |
The Johnny Cash Collection - His Greatest Hits, Volume II |
Spirit - Late 70's repress of their 1970 album Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus. Another great psycodelic band to come out of California in the 60's. |
As I was getting ready to spin some albums last night, I checked on my YouTube regular daily watches, and for whatever reason, a recent Richard Thompson interview popped up, and I watched it; fascinating. Then right after, a interview/documentary on Fairport Convention followed, and I was hooked, and my night was over.
So, after watching both, I’m lead to play some Fairport, Richard, or both. First up…
Fairport Convention - S/T (The US release/version of ‘What We Did On Our Holidays‘). A&M 1969. The first album after Sandy Denny joined.

Holger Czukay / Cinema (5 album box set) Love this box set! Great music, especially if you are a CAN fan |
Richard and Linda Thompson - Pour Down Like Silver. Island 1975 |
|
Joni Mitchell - Clouds. Reprise reissue 1976, originally 1969 |
Leo Kottke S/T This album arrived today. I also bought burnt lips which arrived along with it. I'll play that one tomorrow. Leo is quit the picker. SQ is quite good.
Grover Washington Jr. 'Paradise' Great music but it's a shame that my copy sounds rather poor. Adjust the volume level down and that really helps.
Grover Washington Jr. 'Winelight' Excellent album and this one is so much better in SQ. Very pleasant. |
@tgilb I bought that Spirit album when it first was released, I believe 1971. Last year I bought a reissue from Music On Vinyl, on white vinyl, limited edition. My copy is #132 and it's really very good SQ and very quiet vinyl. If your copy is not in great condition I highly recommend seeking out a reissue copy from Music On Vinyl. Note; I saw Spirit perform in concert 3 times. Fabulous! |
Listening to my other copy of The Golden Age of Wireless by Thomas Dolby. This one is also in nice shape, at least the vinyl. The sleeve has some wear, but it sounds great. This is a fun record and will really show off your system. |
Warming up with Emmylou "All I Intended to Be" |

Rolling Stones - Now! Early pressing from mid 60's with the blue unboxed London logo and Long Playing label. Great used record I picked up about 20 years ago at a great LRS Black Dog Records. Warning on the back of the album sleeve to "Play this record only on Stereophonic Equipment". I do usually prefer the Mono versions of the early Stones albums but this one sounds exceptionally good. It's just got that great blues sound of the early Stones albums. |
@mammothguy54...Thanks for the tip on the Spirit reissue on Music On Vinyl. I've had good luck with excellent pressings from MOV and find them hard to pass up. I never had the opportunity to see Spirit in concert. Must have been phenomenal. |
Patty Griffin "Servant of Love" |
@slaw.. you just played two of my favorites. Emmylou and Patty Griffin. Add Linda Ronstadt and Lucinda and you'll catch them all. |
Had to follow up the Stones Now! with Out Of Our Heads. Red boxed London Long Playing Mono LL 3429 pressing from 1965. |
Regarding "Servant of Love".... listening makes me wonder how much if any influence, her relationship with Robert Plant had on this record? |
@tgilb,
Keep posting here and you'll see I'm a fan of them all! |
"Kidsticks" side 2, after a deep steam and US clean. |
The Triffids - In the pines (Hot), 1986. The Go-Betweens - Before Hollywood (Rough Trade), 1982.

Gretchen Peters "Blackbirds" |
Leo Kottke 'Burnt Lips' This one is not quite as good in SQ as the S/T album, but still is a great listen. And for $2.99 it was a steal.
Grover Washington Jr. 'Inside Moves' This is the last of the 3 albums of Grover that I have. It is a great album and the SQ is very good. Saxophone is so wonderful but can be a little challenging to sound natural on playback. My system does well, but I am so looking forward to the new tube amp arriving. That will be a blessing. It's about 3 weeks away, maybe a little sooner if BAT finishes production ahead of schedule.
Ringo Star 'Ringo' I bought this new just after it released, in 1973. That was with my first real hi-fi system (I was 19) so it has always been played on a respectable arm and cartridge. Excellent bass slam, especially the kick drum. Hey, Ringo is a drummer so of course! Great album, great SQ. |
