I was reading from these postings, about Sophia Pfister. I went to her website and both of her albums first-release are sold out. However, she has a reissue of her second album and it is being sold at a substantial discount from $25 to $5. Shipping is an additional $7 so a total of $12. I figured from what has been said about her I will take a shot at this reissue. There are only 96 units available for sale and she states that when they are all sold that will be it, no more produced. I thought you guys may want to know about this. |
Thanks Joel, I ordered it as well, |

@spiritofradio,
re: C,S,& N
Are you referring to the couch lp? If so, find a clean pp. I have the Classic Records and my pp trounces it. |
Steve, yes the couch Album. I have fairly clean Pitman, CT labels 1969. Sounds like a quilt is over the speakers. I don’t think it’s wear or needle damage although I think side 2 sounds a little better than side 1. My suspicion is that it’s the master. Which PP do you have? |
Hey Steve, Did Ms. Pfister sign your record(s)? I got a nice note with little drawings from her in Sharpie on mine. |
I just set up the Zu Denon DL-103 that Andy Kim recently refreshed on the Wow XL. 10CC - The Original Soundtrack promo copy. Sounds great right off the bat. It will be interesting to see how it sounds after it breaks in a little. |
James,
I misfiled my CS&N lp, can't find it at the moment.
Yep, she wrote, To Stephen, Thank you Dadio. There are little drawings all over like yours. Interesting, she drew a mask over her mouth. Maybe she could see into the future? |
Lots of records all day today. So I added a vintage all tube rectified and regulated power supply to my Croft phono amp. Basically replaced the HT power transformer and cheap rectifier diodes with the output from a high-quality lab supply.

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb Major Vladimir Ashkenazy The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Sir Georg Solti Decca 1981/1973
Wow. This is worth the whole thing.

Roberto Benzi conducts Saint-Saëns - Symphony #3. The Hague Philharmonic. VOX. Stumped by the release date on this. Seems almost all versions are a mystery.

I've been going through a Beethoven Symphony box I didn't realize I had, the 1963 von Karajan cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic. Last few nights I've listened to symphonies 1-5 and 7; tonight it's symphony 6 and perhaps 8. I can see why many feel that this cycle is among the top performances of the works. |
@spiritofradio Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb Major Vladimir Ashkenazy The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Sir Georg Solti As a member of the Berlin Philharmonic/Digital Concert Hall, I watched them live yesterday perform the ‘Emporer’ concerto. Paavo Jarvi conducted, Igor Levit, piano. A wonderfully done performance of that concerto. I checked, and of all the Solti I have, don’t have him conducting that piece. |
@rcprince I've been going through a Beethoven Symphony box I didn't realize I had, the 1963 von Karajan cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic. Last few nights I've listened to symphonies 1-5 and 7; tonight it's symphony 6 and perhaps 8. I can see why many feel that this cycle is among the top performances of the works. I have that cycle on vinyl too, (and two others on vinyl). Karajan’s 63 cycle is almost unanimously thought to be his best Beethoven cycle. It is a very nice set, but I do have a soft spot for my Szell cycle with the Cleveland Orchestra. And also have one with Bohm and the Wiener Philharmoniker. That also has a charm of its own.
The only cycle I have on CD is more modern by Paavo Jarvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Although very good, I think I prefer the three sets on vinyl above. |
@rcprince +1. I don’t know that much but I do think that cycle is a good one, maybe kinda down the middle and, as such, a reference. I have to say though, in my limited experience, I don’t think the sonics on those recordings are the greatest. My favorites are the Simon Rattle with the BP. I also love the Järvi/Bremen (smaller orchestra) cycle. I think it’s unique and brilliant. Another favorite Beethoven Symphony cycle for me is the Bruno Walter/Colombia. I find it especially romantic. I have them on both mono and stereo and like to engage in comparative fantasies and mind wandering with those on. @bkeske, yeah, I had a certificate for it, had it on my calendar, and when I remembered to look at the time I’d already missed 40 minutes of it. Can one see a recording, do you know? |

Beethoven Violin Concerto in D Major, OPUS 61 Arthur Grumiaux Concertgebouw Orchestra Sir Colin Davis Philips 1981 Redux
Aristocratic and transcendent. With this there is something going on in the world that I can’t even imagine.
|
This is one of the most spectacular experiences I’ve ever had with vinyl and it’s a $7 record. |
Never heard anything as rich as the tone of this instrument. |
|
I tend to agree somewhat with spiritofradio on the sonics of the von Karajan Beethoven cycle, while good they are geared more towards the performance rather than the sonics, as is the case with many of the DG recordings of the time. Don't mistake this cycIe for the one from the 70s, though, this one is much better sonically. I also have the Readers Digest box set of the symphonies, and from a sonics standpoint it is better (a classic Wilkinson/Culshaw production), but the surfaces are not as quiet as the DG set.
bkeske1, I have been considering taking up the Berlin on its digital concert hall (I have a number of their SACDs), just have to figure how to stream it outside of my computer speakers. Have you found the subscription worth it? |

Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy Atlantic 2014 Remastered and Produced by Jimmy Page
Had been looking for a new copy of this for awhile and decided on this the modestly priced reissue on Atlantic. Might be a little bright but pretty good so far. Alas, I don’t think I’ll ever hear it sound as good as it did on the tape deck in my ‘63 Dodge Dart.
|
Funny. Yeah, pretty good. Probably worth dragging the orchestra members out of bed. |
@spiritofradio Can one see a recording, do you know? They usually post recordings of the previous live performances within 4-5 days (IIRC). Then yes, you can watch a recording of it. All live recordings are put in the archives. Not sure what your certificate allows, but I would assume it includes live or archived recordings. A non-member person have very limited access to the archives, and typically the most recent performances are not included. Berlin/Digital Concert Hall’s archives are really vast, including quite a few of those old Karajan conducted performances. At $160ish a year, it is really a bargain when you consider what 2 tickets to one concert for the Cleveland Orchestra would cost (or similar). |
@rcprince at the risk of talking about something you’re already well on top of...my feeling about video is that the sq out of a tv is never gonna be ideal but even a mid-fi compromised setup through a good stereo is better than tv or computer speakers or, heaven forbid a soundbar.... I recently caved and bought an inexpensive little DAC (chi-fi, $40) and ran optical to it through the wall from my TV and then ran rca from the little dac (3”x4”x1”) to the spare input on my pre-amp. Of course if your rig already has a good dac within reach of your TV just do that. Anyway, the sound we get is just ok, but there’s a pretty good soundstage and the music from the television has much more human emotion. The first night I hooked this up we spend hours watching cello solos, chamber and orchestral music on YouTube. Of course to save tube life in the system I limit use of this connection for worthwhile videos and movies. |
|
@bkeske agree. Have various certificates that come in the box with purchased vinyl from their own label. Will try it out. |
@noromance big change on tube power supply, thoughts ? |
Charles Lloyd - Voice in The Night |
@rcprince Have you found the subscription worth it? Absolutley. I just started my third year, and do not hesitate re-upping. In terms of getting it on your TV, I use Roku’s throughout the house (I have no cable), but also all my TV’s are ‘smart’ Samsung’s. All Roku’s and my Samsung’s have the Digital Concert Hall app for download. Easy peasy in full surround sound if you desire and have the equipment, which I do. I’m sure an Amazon Firestick, Apple TV units, etc. probably have the app as well, along with other ‘smart’ TV included apps. I bet if you go to their web site, they might have additional info. |

@spiritofradio @big_greg @big_greg +1 on Sugarloaf. Love that record. Wow. Are you guys talking about Sugarloaf from the early 70’s? I have Spaceship Earth, their second album. Haven’t spun it in years....may have to go find it. |
Green Eye’d Lady! Baby. Train Kept a Rollin. And More. Yes. |
That was a good one James! I saw that you mentioned Houses of the Holy earlier. One of my friends just sold me his Classic Records copy of that. It totally destroys the Jimmy Page remaster. If you're ever up this way, you're welcome to stop by and listen. |

Alright, you guys got my curiosity up. Found it next to my Joy Of Cooking, Stoneground, and Barefoot Jerry albums 😁
