Hey Steve,

I would like to hear a super clean original copy of "Who's Next" on my system for reference. Given a choice, I would typically prefer an original pressing, or at least a re-issue or re-master from the original analog tapes. But I'm happy with the MoV "Who's Next" and "All This Useless Beauty". You're correct about one thing for sure: The Vinyl is quiet.

@reubent ,

I guess it’s never a hard and fast rule but we have to go by our own experiences. But since MOV uses digital files, anything originally recorded digitally, won’t be as suseptible to sounding bad or worse. One thing is about MOV, I’m usually impressed with the vinyl quality and pressing quality.

Simply Vinyl wasn’t thought very well of by many end users but the ones I own sound very good. One of them happens to be Tommy.

@slaw  - I have "Who's Next" from MoV and I think it's pretty darn good. Don't have an original to compare though. Good originals seemed too expensive at the time I was looking. Checked the reviews on Discogs and the reviews of the MoV were very positive.

Just listened to it a couple of nights ago. Really good...

I also have Elvis Costello - "All This Useless Beauty" on MoV and it is also very good.

I think I have a couple more. I'll be on the lookout for them and I'll give them a spin if/when I find them.

Mofi has become the quasi-mainstream Audiophile label. With the increasing number of vinyl collectors whose priority is not SQ Mofi has adjusted with the current buyer

I don’t have a problem with MOV for albums from late 80s or 90s and on but for early rock, 60s or 70s, I’d look for originals.

Given the big ’bru-ha-ha’ over Mofi right now, Im not sure what or who to believe....except folks here who have much more experience with these repressing/remasters than I.

I’m typically pleased with my original pressings, and really don’t have a lot of options when it comes to classical anyway.....but I have rarely heard the various reissues in comparison. As they say, ’ignorance is bliss’ :D

@mammothguy54: Yeah, Music On Vinyl is a terrible reissue label. Everyone here should avoid all their LP's. I'm surprised Acoustic Sounds is selling them.

The MoFi A Salty Dog was $35 when released, but as with all MoFi's the price skyrocketed when it became out-of-print. But don't despair: the original UK pressing on EMI/Regal Zonophone also sounds fantastic (I have both), and should be available for less $. The trick will be finding a copy in Near Mint condition.

I too saw Procol Harum in 1971 (at The Fillmore), and though I greatly missed the organ playing of Matthew Fisher, the group was great live.

By the way fans of the original PH line-up (the first three albums): Matthew Fisher's three solo albums are well worth looking for. I love 'em!

Couldn't decide tonight, so I'm streaming Radio Paradise Mellow mix. They never disappoint.

Bill Evans “You Must Believe In Spring”  on 45rpm double album. Great album. Quiet and sounds amazing.

Joel, I'm sure I paid well less than 50% of that price. I only have a handful of records that I cost me more than $50.

So, today I looked for a copy of Daniel Lanois - "Belladonna" on vinyl. Discogs had only one for sale in the US for $150. Great album, but I'm not paying $150.

Well, the MoFi version is now going from between $110 to $165 and mostly from European markets.  I think my copy will server me well.😊

@mammothguy54  - Hey Joel! I have a copy of the MoFi - "A Salty Dog". The cleaning sticker I put on it shows I bought it in Dec 2018. I'm kinda frugal, so it must not have been too expensive. Hopefully you can find a nice one for a good price. It's a great album.

Regarding the Procol Harum album (I am a big fan of Procol Harum and was fortunate to see them in 1971, in a very close seating position), I recently purchased it as a reissue from MOV.  The SQ was so poor that I contacted MOV and inquired about it.  The person who responded told me that it is from a digital file, is a really bad source material, and that another copy would not provide any better SQ.  I contacted Acoustic Sounds and requested an RA for full refund, not an exchange.  They were kind enough to oblige.  I would like to seek out a Classic Records copy, now that I just learned it exists.  By the way, my original copy of Broken Barricades sounds fantastic and is highly recommended, if you can find a NM/M- copy.  My copy of A Salty Dog sounds great but has too much vinyl noise.  I wish that I could find a copy of the MoFi reissue at a reasonable price.  My copy of Home also sounds great but also has too much vinyl noise.  It was never reissued so I will live with what I have.

Aeolian String Quartet :
Haydn - Volume One, String Quartets Op. 71 & 74

I've never seen a copy of the Procol Harum album with the red band around the perimeter.

Welcome to all new posters!

@bdp24

I just finished a Wiki on Duophonic, never knew how it was done or that it was also called Fake Stereo. Thanks for the enlightenment, it’s a reason I hang out around here.

@bdp24

Yes, in small print on the jacket’s front is “Electronically Reprocessed For Stereo”. I don’t know about “fake stereo” but the effect is (imo) comparable to the other stereo records I have that were released back then—not exactly gimmicky but maybe not as pleasant as later stereo records. I agree it’s a fantastic album either way. A newer re-issue would be welcome!

@bslon: Is your A Whiter Shade Of Pale LP (A fantastic album!) a "stereo" pressing? I put stereo in quotes because the original U.S.A. A & M pressing was a "Reprocessed For Stereo" (fake stereo) only release. For that reason we Procol Harum fans sought the UK Regal Zonophone pressing, which was mono only. The only downside of the UK LP is that, as was the custom at that time in the UK, the LP did not contain the hit single!

By the way, in the late-90's/early-2000's, Classic Records reissued the album in a 200 gram Quiex SV-P vinyl pressing, and included a second 12" disc containing the song "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", 33-1/3 RPM on one side, 45 on the other. Also included is a 7" 45 containing an alternate take of the song on one side, the song "Lime Street Blues" (in true stereo) on the other. A fantastic release, imo worth what they now sell for.

Finally, after a long wait and having arrived this morning, Alan Parson Project - Eye in the Sky MOFI....

Dark - Round the Corners. I usually run away from proper Prog-Rock like a dog who just got out of the yard - but man, that fuzztone guitar work. An album stuck between genre’s for sure.

JassStereo’s Henry Red Allen / Coleman Hawkins discs. I listened to several volumes in succession. Great albums by great players and in stereo - a novelty for them at the time. Vol 2 - High Standards has the best version of Summertime I own - and I own about 20 versions without looking too hard. Most of the songs can be found on other jazz labels, but the JassStereo’s engineers do them justice.

Les Differents - S/T. Great Canadian garage punk. I have no idea what they are singing about, but they obviously feel very strongly about it.
