Thunderclap Newman / Hollywood Dream
1970 Track

Produced by Pete Townshend, who also played bass as Bijou Drains (uncredited) as well as his nephew Josh Townshend on rhythm guitar and vocals.

David Lindley: "Mercury Blues" (Asylum AS-11496-X). The LP version already sounds incredible, this 12" white label promo single even better. David and his El Rayo-X band were awesome live on stage.

Bill,

I enjoyed it. My copy is a little noisy. Not quite up to Moby Dick standards in SQ.

@simao

It’s recorded very well. And, fantastic music and performances if you like English romantic style compositions.

@bkeske  I love Williams’ canon. Out of loyalty to my great aunt (the founder) I have the Angel Records release with Adrian Boult conducting but was looking for something with a more fidelity.

I love Boult conducting Williams, and yes, most all are on Angel. I have a few of them. Many folks I know who primarily listen to classical, also really enjoy those Angel releases, still.

I forgot that, yes, you did mention once that your great aunt was a founder of Angel. Pretty incredible. I have many many Angel LP’s, and they are all consistently good.

The Chandos release definitely has more ‘fidelity’. That one was a 1985 reissue/DMM remaster release, but have a feeling the original from 1979 was true analog. Regardless, sounds fantastic.

A rare occurrence a rock recording(Squire) takes the SQ trophy tonight. No recordings  had below average SQ. 1977 was a great deep year for "Classic Rock" Pat Travers is almost always overlooked, a great guitar recording.

@bkeske

How's the sound and pressing quality of the Hilary Hahn Eclipse record?

Best wishes,

Don

@no_regrets

Hi Don. The pressing is very good. The sound is a bit different compared to her other, particularly her previous, Paris.

It has a ‘big hall’ feel to it, almost sounds as it was recorded ‘live’. More similar to how an early 60’s to mid-70’s recorded orchestration may sound like. Very full, and not so keyed onto Hilary being much more forward. Personally, I like that old recording style. But it is a bit of a difference from what we ‘expect’ from a modern orchestral recording.

And, of course, it is Hilary. Nuff said. IMO, one of the best ever.

Steely Dan-Katy Lied(ABC Sunburst Label) Side B

Dionne Warwick-Hot Live And Otherwise Side B

Renee Rosnes-Beloved Of The Sky Side A SQ Audiophile

Jethro Tull-Aqualung Side 1

Tony Bennett-Get Happy With The LPO Side 1

The Charlie Daniels Band-Simple Man Side 2

Beethoven-Violin Concerto(Kyung-Wha Chung L25C-3029) Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Keith Jarrett-The Koln Concert(ECM PA-6053-54) Side A SQ Audiophile

Tony Bennett and Tull had average SQ at best. Tull was a late 1970’s gatefold pressing without barcode. Renee Rosnes(2018) takes the SQ crown with the help of Kevin Gray. IMO one of the best recordings of new material in the past 5 years. If you want only 1 Warrick recording consider this live album.. The Koln concert is outstanding no need for my opinion. Kyung-Wha Chung plays with a great balance of technique and feel.

@bkeske

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on the "Eclipse" album and I couldn't agree more about Hilary!

I think I will pick this lp up based on your comments, Thank you!

Best wishes,

Don
