I know. Neither was The Real Thing.
-Just An Illusion (Imagination)
Not sure if this too will qualify. But to me them are just too darn hot to miss out on when listing--70's Soul/Disco hits. |
Hey now! Earth, Wind & Fire was hardly a 1 hit wonder band. |
Ahh yes... soul/disco!
-Funkytown (Lipps Inc.) -Le Freak (Chic) -Let's Groove (Earth, Wind & Fire) -I Love The Nightlife (Alicia Bridges) -You To Me Are Everything (The Real Thing)
Are few that will transport me right back to those fun filled groovy days. |
Dayglow- fair enough. The only song from the Trampps that hit my radar was the Inferno song. As to Bros Johnson, Strawberry Letter really does it for me. |
Whart-Brothers Johnson had 3 top 10 Billboard hits, strong album sales and many top 40 r&b hits. The Trammps had 2 other top 40 Billboard hits. IMO the best disco/r&b examples are... Rock The Boat-Hues Corporation The Hustle-Van McCoy Turn The Beat Around-Vicki Sue Robinson |
|
Hold On (To What You Got) by Ian Gomm |
Little switch to the soul/disco side: first, Disco Inferno by the Trampps- I think the lead singer went to prison for a while after he pistol whipped his girlfriend on Valentine's Day; and... Shuggie Otis, covered by the Bros Johnson: Strawberry Letter #23- classic soul. Doesn't get any better than that. |
You know, reading and being reminded of some of these songs, I'm not sure why we are nostaglic. :) |
Nobody mentioned yet.. but from my part of the world, hits like..
-Do That To Me One More Time (Captain & Tenille) -Please Don't Go (KC & The Sunshine Band) -Love Is In The Air (John Paul Young) -First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack)
Are some that certainly made their marks during the '70's--while not exactly a one hit wonder, but.. Miss those great eras, the '70s & '80s. |
Thanks Marty, and you are right, it is a great song. |
I believe that Spiral Staircase charted with "More Today Than Yesterday". Great song, but late '60's IIRC.
Marty |
Not necessarily my one and only one and only but certainlyh worth recalling, Blues Image's "Ride Captain Ride". Don't think I saw that posted previously. |
Ozz, Inna Gadda Da Vidi was 60's. I saw Iron Butterfly when the song was a hit. Stuck in the Middle with You was really Gerry Rafferty, he had a string of hits.
What was the hit by 'Spiral Starecase'? (Pretty sure that was 70's but maybe it was 60's also). |
Which Way You Going Billy, bye the Poppy Family.............. |
Iron Butterfly was 1968. I also wouldn't describe Mott the Hoople as a one hit wonder. Prior the their alliance with David Bowie they had released 4 albums, of which 2 are quite good, and were considered one of the great live acts of the period. Dylan meets early heavy metal. You should also remember Mick Ralphs went on the form Bad Company. |
Oh yeah? How about "Stay awhile" by the Belles? It either moves you or creeps you out. Great Halloween tune. |
How about In a Gadda da vida? |
Chi Coltrane "Thunder and Lightning" |
How about Mot the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes". |
"Oh Babe" ... one of my favs. |
Yep, Norman Hurricane Smith who was an audio engineer for the Beatles and producer for Pink Floyd. I believe he recently passed away. Great tune. |
Anyone remember "Oh Babe, What Would You Say?" by Hurricane Smith? |
The Amazing Rythm Aces did a few. I really like The Ella B for instance. |
"Third Rate Romance" by Amazing Rhythm Aces "Joy" by Apollo 100 "Overture from Tommy" by Assembled Multitude
BTW, Andy Kim was the writer of "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies, a #1 smash in 1969. |
"Love is Like Oxygen" was by "Sweet".
They had several hits in the 70's, not one hit wonders. Fun stuff! |
Tighter, Tighter---Alive n Kickin (with Tommy James) |
I'm good with that. All good memories. This thread tortured me today. There was a point where Captain and Tenelle (spelling) was going through my head and at the same time I was listening to Ani Difranco on the stereo and the dog was playing with a squeek toy. |
Donjr.
Billy, Don't Be A Hero was a #1 hit for Paper Lace in the UK. The US hit was by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. I don't believe that Paper Lace ever reached the top 40 with that song in the US.
Marty |
Thanks, Dayglow. I think my older sister got me a demo copy from WVBR, the Cornell Student Radio station.
"Oh, Lord, take meback . . . " |
Love is Like Oxygen. I cant remember who sang it but it sure got a ton of radio play. |
Billy Don't be a Hero was by Paper Lace who also did The Night Chicago Died. |
Jdoris-You make a very strong case. Geronimo Cadillac peaked at #37-1972 and Carolina in the Pines #21-1975. |
Jperry. He told her to get some sleep and dream of rock and roll. lol
Chevy Vam
I gave a girl a ride in my wagon Now she crawled in and took control She was tired as her mind was draggin And I said get some sleep-and dream of rock and roll
Like a picture she was laying there And moonlight dancing off her hair She woke up and took me by the hand She's gonna love me in my Chevy van And that's alright with me
Her young face was like that of an angel And her long legs were tanned and brown Better keep your eyes on the road son Better slow this vehicle down 'cause
'Cause like a picture she was laying there And moonlight dancing off her hair She woke up and took me by the hand She's gonna love me in my Chevy van And that's alright with me
I put her out in a town that was so small You could throw a rock from end to end A dirt road main street, she walked off in her barefeet And it's a shame I won't be passin' through again
Like a picture she was laying there And moonlight dancing off her hair She woke up and took me by the hand We made love in my Chevy van And that's alright iwth me
Yeah like a picture she was laying there And moonlight dancing off her hair She woke up and took me by the hand We made love in my Chevy van And that's alright with me |
Raytheprinter, yes on that "Rebel" LP, Decca Pressing when you look for the original. |
Syntax,Was that on the" Rebel" LP ? Stranger in the City ,had some choice tunes too. Lady of my Life,my fave off of Rebel |
Automatic Man debut album from 1977. |
10-20-12: Donjr Dayglow. Right on with Wildfire and Chevy Van. I don't think they can even play Chevy Van on the radio any longer. I always thought those two songs were quite good.
I heard Chevy Van on the radio earlier this week. Talk about going into a time warp... |
'Music was my first love' --> 1976, John Miles |
There's some good songs on this list and some laughs! |
Someone mentioned, "Mexican Radio" / Wall of VooDoo, think that one was from the 80's too...
Good thread, as I'm reading the entries, I'm recalling all of these tunes in my head and remember nearly all of them...
How about, "Billy don't be a hero" to add another one... |
Was Michael Murphy really a one hit wonder? What about "Geronimo's Cadillac"? |
Dayglow. Right on with Wildfire and Chevy Van. I don't think they can even play Chevy Van on the radio any longer. I always thought those two songs were quite good. |
Here's a couple you'll probably remember: Do You Know What I Mean- Lee Micheals, and: Resurrection Shuffle- Ashton, Gardner, and Dyke. Great tunes. |
I'll add a few more that might not have been mentioned. 1-Wildfire-Michael Martin Murphy 2-Chevy Van-Sammy Johns 3-Shannon-Henry Gross 4-My Maria-B.W. Stevenson 5-Baby Come Back-Player |
Jungle Love is from 1984. |
Jungle Love / Morris Day and The Time |
Bloodstone...Natural High
|
I'm on Fire / Dwight Twilly |
And that would be Cerrone "Supernature"... |
