Sub repair or new sub?

Hello Inmates,

I have a SVS cylindrical subwoofer for HT purposes only that I bought way back in 2003 and still works fine. It has been in its current position for a few years now, but for the last several months it emits a very high frequency whine/chirping kind of steady noise which sounds like crickets. The noise is quite audible away from the sub. The noise is not always there, but more frequent these days and comes and goes. When it is quiet, and I put my ear against the top, I can hear a very faint version of it (if it was just that, I would not complain given the age of the unit. I have tried plugging the power cable to directly to the outlet vs. power conditioner and it did not make any difference.

I contacted SVS and they told me the amp is likely going out and needs to replaced. They have given me a quote of $400 to replace the amp (it is fairly DIY) with the same amp that drives a SVS PC-13 Ultra.

$400 is a lot of money to fix a 20+ year old sub. Is there a cheaper way to fix the amp. I am wondering if I should do this, or just get a new sub within $500 or so.

TIA.

I think you’re crazy to fix that sub, plus you’ll probably be on the hook for shipping both ways that will drive the cost up further.  Just get an SB1000 Pro that’s probably a much better performer and comes with their integration software, and at $599 it’s not much more expensive than the cost of fixing your dinosaur.

@soix there is no shipping involved as they will ship the amp for $399.99 and then I have to replace it which is fairly straightforward. However, I do agree that I probably should look at a new sub around the $500 mark.

If you've only got 500 bucks, get the verafi 12 inch sub and send the svs to its grave.

If the driver is in good shape, you're unlikely to find a better sub than the one you already have with the replacement amp for under $500.

Wow, about 11 years ago I had an SVS subwoofer that needed repair and the company wanted me to buy a new one. They didn't seem interested in fixing the one I had. I moved on from SVS.
