Ok, here is mine:
1. pre 1988: Tower speakers - no idea of brand/price, 15" woofers 2. 1988-1990: Advent bookshelfs - ~$100 3. 1991: Yamaha YST-A10 (I think) bookshelfs - ~$89/each? 4. 1992: Infinity SM115 - $500 for the pair 5. 1992-2002: Infinity Kappa 8 - $700 used (mains, then surrounds) 6. 1993-2002: INFINITY KAPPA 9 - $1280 new 7. 2002-: INFINITY IRS BETA - $4050 plus shipping and refoaming 8. 2002-: Infinity IRS Gamma - $2500 (needs new woofers) 9. 2002-: INFINITY IRS BETA - $3000 (I couldn't pass up another pair) 10. 2002-: INFINITY IRS V - $24000 (gotta hear it for brand loyalty!)
I think I am done "evolving" my speakers, but I need some lower end ones for the rest of the house... |
Mrpoindexter: Please don't tell us you're using the two pairs of Betas as surrounds with the IRS as the main front speakers in an HT set-up!!! What's your listening room, Royal Albert Hall?? |
My listening room is really too small for what these speakers need. If you would like to see some pictures, I could email them. Send me your email and you can see how big speakers look in a small room. I can't even use my projector right now because the IRS V blocks about 30% of my screen.
I have the IRS V set up as mains and am using the Gammas as my rears for the moment. I need to pick up a couple more amps and then will move the dual betas into the surround position and the gammas will lay on their sides and become the center channel.
If I decide to matrix a center surround, I will split the gammas and get a pair of modulus for the ceiling effect speakers.
If infinity made an IRS Center and IRS Surround, then I would have had them instead, but unfortunately the didn't, so I guess I am stuck with betas. |

IMHO, my list reflects a distinct learning curve, in terms of an ongoing search for greater detail, finesse, and enjoyment. Each new selection has enabled me to listen THROUGH the music better, and to stay involved in it longer and more thoroughly. And this, my friends, is what this whole obsession is all about--even if we don't always hear things in the same way. |

Radio Shack suitcase stereo vintage 1966. 4" speakers that didn't take long for me to blow.
Home made speaker cabinets made in woodworking shop as a freshman in high school. Bought some 8" speakers at a stereo shop to put in the cabinets.
Made new cabinets in wood shop for above speakers my junior year in high school out of solid 3/4" teak. Was going to a boarding school in India at the time, thus the ready supply of teak. Sold these (and my whole stereo) at the end of my senior year to a Maharaja's son who lived in Madras, South India (no kidding)and made a bunch of money.
Bose 501's circa 1973. Borrowed money from a girlfriend to pay for one of these and later sold the pair to her. My first "real" speakers. Wouldn't you know it would be Bose. Never really liked them that much and doubt I kept them more than a year.
Speaker Lab kits circa 1974. Don't remember the model. Big and boomy. Sold them to a friend who probably still has them.
McIntosh MC101 or something like that in 1975. Beautiful cabinets and much much better than anything prior.
Magnapans 1977. Don't remember the model (maybe 1As?)but there were only two models then, these were not the big ones that look like room dividers (1Ds I think). I really liked these.
KEF 101 2 way monitors with a large RH Labs subwoofer. The KEFs were very nice, not so sure about the RH Labs.
Accoustat Model 3s. The only electrostats I've owned. Only one place to sit (and you had to sit there)but great sound. Tended to make popping sounds if driven hard. Also had model 4s at the time that belonged to my roommate which saw more use cause they were bigger.
Spica TC50s. These were the second pair made which I got through a friend who was the importer of Electocompaniet at the time. Sold these in 1985 to my brother who still has them.
Spica TC50s. Got a second pair from the roommate mentioned above who opened a shop out of his home while in graduate school in Michigan.
Respons Grand speakers from Europe. Got these through my friends at Transparent Audio. Big, heavy, full-range and ultimately not that great.
Acoustic Energy AE1s with a pair of Entec LF-10 subwoofers. Sold the Entecs (never could get rid of their buzz) and bought a Muse model 18 subwoofer. Overall I think I prefered the Entecs, but in the end the AE1s were too forward for me.
Thiel 3.6s. A demo pair from my friends at Transparent Audio. These were very nice if a bit forward sounding.
Aerial Model 5s. Great speaker! Kept these for my second HT setup (first HT speakers were Cambridge Ensemble and Ambiance speakers).
Aerial 10Ts. My current and long term reference. Have thought of trying something different, but this is the only speaker I've owned that I really love. For the price they are very hard to beat as I'm sure many here will agree.
Aerial Model 7s replaced the model 5s in my HT setup and I purchased a single model 5 for the center channel. NHTs are used for surrounds. Current as of this writing.... |
Dual - 4 years. bought an integrated with turntable and speakers when in Germany in 1970 or so. Eventually broke down but provided some good tunes in college.
Kef 105/3 - 6 years. I liked these but eventually one of my kids blew the tweeters.
Chapman T-7 - one year
Merlin VSM-SE - six months
Spendor SP100 - three months
Audio Physic Virgo - one and 1/2 months.
(My ears were getting better. Or something.)
MEADOWLARK BLUE HERON - 9 months then lost my job and had to sell. These are damn good speakers and it hurt to let them go.
ESP Concert Grands - on their way. We shall see.... |
Huge wood Sansui speakers with wood grills -- awesome for my teen years through college -- free from my brother
Ohm bookshelf speakers -- decent because dirt cheap -- maybe $100 in 1983?
ADS M9 -- loved these -- last speaker I had before audiophilia set in -- about $700 in 1990
Hales Rev 3's -- excellent all rounder, but you need a big room and big amps -- about 2100 in 1994/5
Soliloquy 5.0's -- paid about $900 new with the stands -- a great deal -- superb little speakers -- I miss them but don't have a place for them
Paradigm Atoms for the office -- all the niceties aside, they are still a fairly cheap little speaker
Soliloquy Sat-5's for the office -- much better
Gallo Due/MPS 150 -- still have them and have never had them in a position where they can show off -- paid about $1600 for the set not long ago, barely used
Spendor SP1 -- paid $700 used not long ago -- mellow as hell -- will be the speaker in the main system until I make the next choice. I can see why people like these -- never annoying -- but they are not very dynamic.
Next? Thinking of Revel F-50, Verity Fidelio, Piega C3-ltd...dreaming |

Wow what a great question... You have just reminded me what i love so much about music.
My list is not very glorified.. but I can guarantee i had as much fun as anyone!
8 years old
1.) A really bad set of full range's that came with an 8 track player that i also used to run my first electric guitar thru. It was so bad i used to get that Black sabbath grind (some serious amp clipping) without a distortion box. AWESOME! Oh and anyone remember just how bad 8 tracks were? You could actually hear other tracks playing in background.
The other day my son told me his walkman has better bass than my new SUV's stereo. I havent had a chance to upgrade yet. All i could do was laugh. And tell him he's right. Poor kid is seven and already gettin bit by the bug. Brought back memories.
11 years old
2.) A set of Bose 301's the ones with the reflector for the tweeter. At the time they were the sh***t to have. I used to turn them up to eleven every day and just flogged the hell out of them. There were times i thought the wolfers were going to jump out of box. HOLLY SH***T!
13 years old
3.) A set of Sonic's they had two 12 wolfers two 5 mids and two 1 or 2 inch tweeters in each. I had to replace the tweeters many times. I used the Rat Shack super tweeters a couple of times. Absolutely drove the neighbors nuts. If they or I have any hearing problems its might be from those. Crank em!
16 years old
4.) A full Marshall stack (guitar amp) which includes 2 cabinets with 4 12's in each driven by an 100 watt tube amp. The same one's Ted nugent used to get 150db at his shows from. YEAH hair on fire!
20 years old
5.) A set of kenwoods. One of their many three way's. Dont remember model. Probably cause they really didnt do anything well. Still loved em though. Dont know what i abused more my first car or those poor speakers.
26 years old
6.) Still running Kenwoods upgrade to monster wires and cables. pretty amazing they held up as long as the did.
33 years old
7.) My first real step... Four Infinity RS series i think they were RS3's with a 8 inch Infinity sub and a 15 Cerwin Vega sub. Ok.. getting better!
36 years old
8.) First really good sound... four bi wired (analysis plus) Infinty IL30's two IL10 centers and a Velodyne 15 SUB. I think most of you would be pretty surprised. Ok.. much better!!
37 years old (really ready for good stuff now)
9.) Im on the verge of upgrading to Revel studio's, voice center and gems for surround or comparable Infinity MTS series or possibly Martin Logan's I am hurting for room so that might cancel the Logans. I have a six channel system thats been assembled to do everything well (yes two channel also) so everything i do is a big step. As if i needed another expensive hobby. I live on water and recently got the offshore powerboat bug also (if you think hi-fi gear is expensive go buy a 35 foot Fountain offshore powerboat) Hi-fi is a wonderful bargain and great investment compared and there's no matinence.
So as you can see my equipment has been limited until last couple of years. I am the owner (also the lead engineer) of a succsesful company now that specialzes in High density, Highly complex circuit boards www.risingedgedesign.com. I have personally designed 48 layer PCB's with approx 10,000 connections. So i understand the electronics very well. I am also a musician also so i know what the music is supposed to sound like and what the recording proccess can do.
The one thing that hasent changed over time is my love for music and equipment. It is and has always been a huge part of my life. I didnt know what i didnt have... And was just happy with what i had. And i wouldent trade the experience for anything! Well maybe new Revels..hmmm? Nah..
Hope i didnt go too far off track here... Just got caught up in last 37 years.
Best regards to all and dont forget to have fun! |

Update:
fisher - well, it was a start.
Boston Acoustics - really, not bad.
Apogee Stage - now we're talking - My first step to the perfect sound
Apogee Duetta Signature - you will think you have the greatest speaker in the world. The Apogee, like other dipoles, projects a seamless image of the performer before you. Unlike other dipoles, the Duetta fleshes out the musicians and singers, giving them tangible body, and the Duetta ribbon bass is to die for.
Apogee Scintilla - Major reviewer Ken Kessler owns one. He says the Scintilla is, " ...The antipasto which most speakers dare not follow" in Kessler's review of the Perigee (Apogee evolution), reviewed after a listen to his own Scintilla in his daunting listening room. |
I can boast I never owned Bose...and never will...Dq-10s,Spica tc-50s,Snells,Quad 12Ls... |
Aaagh memories, 1981, genesis 210's $450.00pr/new. I was a junior in high school. I gave them to my brother in MINT cond. about 13 yrs ago and just recently got them back. I completely refurb them right down to the grill cloth. Had profile 3's for about 10 yrs. still have a pr of paradigm mini 3se. This speaker is so freakin' good I will never part with it. They absolutely love my golden tube se-40. Have a pr of paradigm atoms with a vintage tandberg in the bedroom. Have a pr of virtuals w/a vintage harman kardon 300b in the basement, and am currently running PSB stratus silver i's in the main system. This speaker never ceases to amaze me, I don't care what amp, pre-amp, cd player, cables etc. You will get a different sound with every change. What really sealed the deal especially for the psb are NORDOST blue heavens. Sorry for the rant I felt the need :) |
