My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Never heard the GT Audioworks, but all panels I heard so far had a certain thinness, which I did not like.
Owned at the time Audiostatic panels, glad I got rid of it after a year or so.

It will be fun to hear these against the big boys in jays audiolab.

First off Kren0006- How do you know that the GT speakers are not going to make it into Jay’s sound room.
In fact just to show that you don’t know what you’re talking about I have been communicating with Jay and trying to arrange a pair to be sent down to him.
This is quite a difficult feat as everything is made to order and we are extremely back ordered.
Yes we are not the largest company in the world but at the same token we take things to the limit in terms of technology and how things are not just picked off the shelf - like most speaker companies who get their drivers from other manufacturers. As far as your comparison with Magnaplabar we have a lot of customers who have either owned or heard the Magna Planars and chose the GT Audioworks I can give you their names numbers and email addresses if you care to speak with them.
Until you come here and audition them you were not in a position to criticize our company.

Ok, last post on this because you keep accusing me of things I've never said and that's not cool.  I never said they would never make it.  I said they never have to this point (undeniably true) despite all of your pandering.  I also said if Jay ever does bring them in, then discussion of them here will make sense.  You are just continuing to use this thread for advertising, and people see through it, which is probably why nobody responds to your videos.  And when people offer you honest feedback like Inna did, you can't handle it (which is clear based on how you insulted him/her).
Again meaning no disrespect you don’t know what you’re talking about as Jay and I have had numerous discussions about posting videos of the GT Audioworks system  he wanted me to purchase the Shure MV88+ microphone and thought this would be a good way to compare systems to have some fun.
Therefore, your accusations that we are pandering and using this thread for our own purposes is clearly erroneous.

If you paid close attention to this blog you would’ve noticed that Jay mentioned our system as one of the best systems he heard at Axpona.
At the very least before we can get a pair to Jay -we have many customers in Florida and once I get vaccinated I plan on going down there and meeting Jay and we will listen to the speakers at One of our customers homes in Florida.
Ok, look forward to it. Let’s hear them in Jay’s room. Make it happen.  Until then, let's not hear about them.
I can't really guess the speakers that are coming. Probably not Magico or Wilson. Kharma or Sonus Faber perhaps. If so, it certainly is going to be a different sound. I like Kharma.
Those Boulders and those top of the line Boulders that I posted keep sounding in my heard. And that's youtube not reality.
It actually would be interesting to compare Boulder and Gryphon with large scale music. Maybe Gryphon would win overall. Gryphon designer Flemming Rasmussen, now semi-retired, said he himself preferred large scale music. Well, I doubt Gryphon would win but who knows ?

Too many variables. Both are at the top no matter who is sitting in front of the music. No Boulder owner can bad mouth a Mephisto owner and no Mephisto owner can bad mouth a Boulder owner. I had people come and listen to both and it was never clear cut dinner for anyone. Some people preferred the Mephisto for some music and the Boulder for other music.
If i go back to boulder, I'd do the 2160 and if i go back to Gryphon I'll do essence monos.

Gryphon Essence is their new entry level, I understand. 55 watt/ch /8ohm. It's Gryphon class A power but still your new speakers got to be quite efficient.
Listening to your recordings it was clear cut to me, I always preferred Boulder, at some moments by far. Maybe in reality it would've been somewhat different, maybe. Boulder is also more expensive so perhaps more people who are ready to buy will choose Gryphon stereo.
Oh, I'll trust you.
I listened to more of various recordings on youtube with both Luxman and Accuphase amplification. In all cases I liked Accuphase more. I know, they are very overpriced in the US so Luxman looks like a better value. That may be but I think Accuphase is one or two steps above. If not Gryphon Diablo integrated I personally would be looking for used Accuphase integrated at this level, not Luxman or Pass.
Boulder is good, Wilsons are good, cabling is good.
Pass amps are popular because they sound nice not because they sound right.
I think sounding "right" is also a matter of opinion. There is no standard or school that teaches you what "right" should sound like.
This is why there is so much debate of wilson vs mágico. We don't have or better said, we haven't identified a standard for sound. I think if i was right in front of a real band playing music I'd be fatigued real quick but that is real live sound...does this mean i want that in my home? Not if it leads me to a 20 min listening session.
There is a debate going on on Audiogon - Absolute or Pleasing sound thread. I belong to the school of realists, mostly.
Boulder, Gryphon, D'Agostino don't sound the same, and Boulder is the closest to the real thing to my ear, but they are all at a different level, they all sound just about right. Like the same band performing in different concert halls.
I hate Magico sound, I consider it artificial hi-fi. Nothing against bigger Wilson, I would be happy to have Wilson Maxx in my room. Well, I would need to move to have a bigger room for them.
Sure.
Michael Green Audio free resonance Rev80i speakers.
Nottingham Spacedeck/Spacearm/Goldring 1042  table/arm/cartridge.
Nakamichi 682ZX cassette deck.
Acoustech PH-1 phono stage.
Burson Audio Timekeeper power amp.
Burson Audio Soloist preamp/headphone amp.
PS Audio PPP current regenerator.
WyWires Diamond, Purist Audio Neptune, Tchernov Reference interconnects.
Purist Dominus RevB power cord ( for the amp)
Purist Aquila power cord ( for the regenerator )
Custom Power Cord Company Top Gun power cords for the phono stage and preamp.
Purist Colossus speaker cables.

I was thinking about some upgrades and then I thought that almost everything has to be upgraded if I want to go much higher.
I often run deck directly into the power amp and run the phono through the deck, that's bypass the Burson preamp.
Almost bought used Gryphon Diablo 120 last month but thought it would be too tough financially, so I'll wait for now. And speakers need replacement too but what I want - Kharma or Wilson - is too much at present.
Jay,
My best recommendation is to go to Preservation Hall in New Orleans.  I was there in summer 2005 right before Katrina.  The picture on the website brings back great memories.  Hear live unamplified jazz from that small and lively stage.  There are only 3 benches to seat a small audience.  The show was 30 min and cost $6.  30 min is plenty of time to give you great music and sound that will make more impact at 80-90 dB with greater transient peaks, than hours of time in front of a euphonic audio system blasting away. The next best thing to Preservation Hall is an audio system that emphasizes clarity at a modest volume so you don't get ear fatigue.  80 dB from Boulder is more thrilling than dull 90 dB mud, thud and crud from the likes of Constellation, etc.

Musical life will open soon.  I have a feeling that Preservation will book fast.
@inna

Thanks for posting your system. I couldn't find anything on your Michael Green speakers. About 35 years ago I had a Nakamichi Dragon. My first real high end piece...I loved that deck! I also have 2 Custom Power Cord Company Top Gun 'Specials' stored in my garage cabinet. They were the first aftermarket PC that really made a difference in SQ for the better. They are so thick and difficult to maneuver I have no idea what to do with them.
Hey INNA why don’t you post a video of your system playing the same Chris Stapleton song
Death Row and let everybody else be the judge what is the better sound.
Nah, do that on a separate thread.  Not here - not relevant.  This thread is about WC's room.  Not about dealer showrooms or follower's setups.  Keep the focus.  Let the deafening silence speak to you.
Hey Kren0006
you’re not the boss here this is not your thread in fact Jay encourages other bloggers to make videos of the same songs that he is posting if this clown is going to critique anybody’s system then we should know what their baseline is we should at least hear their system in a video.

Nobody cares. I keep telling you that but you don’t get it. This thread is about WC’s system. The rest is noise. Start another thread. And stop insulting other followers (clown?)

You are a dealer.  This is WC's system thread.
You are not the boss either.  Your proposal is based on sour grapes; nothing more.

Are you seriously suggesting that anyone who renders an opinion about what they hear then needs to make a video of the same song using their system?

Start your own thread and advertise to your heart's content.

We are waiting impatiently for Jay's new set up and videos. I posted my system and that's it. Besides, we are interested in high end systems not good mid fi value systems.
Listen you obviously haven’t read what I posted earlier that Jay has encouraged me to make videos and post them on his thread.
In fact if you have followed the thread Jay has indicated that he has encouraged other people to post videos of the songs he had auditioned on the speakers.
It’s all about having fun and if you are too threatened by the speakers either because you can’t afford them or they are better than what you have that’s your problem.
Your bullying tactics and telling me I am not allowed to post anymore is not going to do Prevent me from posting.
Until Jay tells me personally to stop posting or you clowns get a court order to stop me that’s the only way this is going to end.
Let’s see any other small manufacturer have the balls to post videos like us because their speakers are probably not worthy of it.
I don’t need to sell the speakers to anybody on this thread because they sell themselves once they are auditioned. In fact to the above haters who have posted -I wouldn’t even want to do business with you and sell them to you as you are not worthy of doing business with.

Wow. Even more pathetic than I thought. Do whatever, post away about the speakers you sell if you must. But nobody cares
Kren006
then you must think that you’re pathetic because we don’t even know what type of system you have and even if you have indicated what system you have why don’t you post some videos Jay has told me he encourages it step up to the plate.
faxer - no need to get personal (name calling, etc), unless you wish to have your posts removed by a moderator.  And, it's not helping you at all with the valid point you can make.  If anything, it's turning folks off, as can be seen here.
As I mentioned, you have a valid point to make.  WC has put up the challenge to manufacturers/dealers, and you are responding.  If WC doesn't care for what you are doing, I'm sure he will let you know.  In the meantime, you are just doing what he's agreed to have you do.
kren0006 mentions that nobody cares - but WC cares and is daring folks to step up.  You are doing that.  Perhaps a classier approach is to take the high road with folks like kren0006 or ignore their posts altogether.  If you wish to dispute what they post, there's always a nicer approach.
Dave
AZKS-Yes I agree with everything you posted
But please put yourself in my shoes I was initially critiqued by INNA Who is doing so with a pair of speakers that can be purchased on the used market for under $500 (as I believe they are discontinued and the MSRP was 1650).
So, therefore how can anybody with a baseline like that be in a position to criticize anybody. Yes I agree I can choose the highroad and disregard these haters but I also have a right to defend my company.
When listening to youtube I always use Burson dac and Grado RS-1 headphones, not the main system.
But I got a question. When listening to Jay's comparisons I couldn't tell which one, Boulder or Gryphon, did better overall with low bass. What do you think?
Here is the problem I have with faxer’s approach on this thread, which is about WC’s room.

faxer is a dealer. He sells GT speakers and Pass Labs. He’s mentioned that a few times in his 124 posts to this thread, but I believe A’gon’s policy is that dealers are supposed to make clear at all times that they are dealers when they shill their products. But I digress.

faxer has posted 124 times to this thread (just click on his username and you can see the posts to this thread). Most of those 124 posts are touting the speakers or amps that he sells, or criticizing people like me who tell him that this thread is not about gear that hasn’t been in WC’s room (at least not about 124 posts constantly touting something that hasn’t been in WC’s room - 1, 2, a dozen, okay, but 124?).

Most people don’t criticize faxer’s gear because most have never heard it. When someone does criticize it, like Inna did ("terrible sound"), he cannot handle the criticism and resorts to namecalling or system shaming.

When he posts videos of his equipment, which has been 3 or 4 times now, rarely does anyone respond to the substance of it. Maybe they are being polite in not responding, or maybe they just ignore, I don’t know. Doesn’t really matter - but the point is, it’s crickets. That’s why I keep saying nobody cares.

Anyway, That’s it. He’s a dealer who repeatedly posts about the speakers he sells, where the speakers have never been in WC’s room to this point despite all the posting about them. When WC chose a similar speaker to purchase, he chose Magnepan 3.7i and 20.7.

But whatever, it’s a free country.
I agree kren0006 - name calling and system shaming are not good ways to handle criticism.   Yes, faxer has a right to defend his Company - after all, it's his livelihood - which is even more reason for him to avoid the negative ways of handling things.

Dave
Anyway, WC, jump in and tell us more about what is coming. Reel this back in and get the focus on your room.

What’s gonna be driving the Sonus Faber’s?

Oh, and welcome back Viber!  Kinda missed ya! (don’t everyone send me hate mail)
It seems to never occur to someone that no speakers sound the same in varied room, and that each speakers ask for a specific room treatment especially to work at his peak against another speakers ?

Then any reviewing have his limits.... Any criticism also have his limit...Especially if someone has never listen to the speakers anywhere in a concrete room to begins with...

Just my 2 cents experience...

Anyway criticizing someone who give himself so much trouble and passion to did this for all of us is shameful in my book...W.C. is passionate and want to help...Simple...

But in another way no speakers can be judged definitively on the basis of one single acoustic settings ...Then bashing them WITHOUT direct experience is at least indelicate...Some here must refrain themselves to do so... Only W.C. has this right....He experience them, not us. at his own risk....

Generally we judge speakers on the basis of OUR room, and we improve them with our set of acoustic controls... At the end our judgement is our OWN only tough... It is our own experience...

The interest of this thread is the unique way W.C. could compare any gear, in great numbers, in his room for himself.... This also implied a limiting factor... This is his room his ears and the way he install all that in his working dimensions...This is a limiting factor with with to balance his impressions...

But the great positive contribution of this thread is unique because for many products comparison, the limitations of the room and subjective experience of W. C. plays way less than the huge difference between the gear.... Then the impressions of W.C. are even more powerfully on the core and spot on, in spite of his choice of room and even in spite of his own preferences....This could help many futur buyer a lot to make right choices...

No thread like this exist anywhere on the net.... Someone interested to upgrade his gear has interest to "decode" W.C. impressions and tastes, to factor his installation and room, and have the chance to buy some new gear with a more enlightened view and more alternatives at the end....

i read his thread with interest myself... And his videos are interesting to say the least... We enjoy....And we say thanks...

My best to all.....
WC, correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t ever recall you owning a horn speaker. Is that right, and if so is there a reason?
Viking Acoustic horns ever have a chance of appearing?
I have heard horns but they seem to be too fatiguing...the dynamics are almost too much for me although I know that's one of their greatest strengths.
So..anyone is thinking of buying D'Agostino Momentum integrated ? It's only $45k. Can one get overall higher performance with separates for about the same? Considering typical midsize room.
kren0006,
Gosh, it is good to hear you missed me.  I made several videos of the GTA at Steve's place with his components and with my Rane and Bryston.  I sent them with comparison to Jay's videos of the Alexx/Boulder/Mephisto playing the same songs in emails to a few trusted people who have the open mind to listen.  They show that the Alexx has greater quantity of mid bass and deep bass, but the GTA even with more modestly priced components wipes out the Alexx system for clarity and lifelike naturalness.  The differences are 10-100 times greater than the differences among electronics, cables, stands, etc.  My own Audiostatic 240 + Enigmacoustics tweeters are in a class by themselves for clarity, although most people could not accept their lack of deep bass and macrodynamics.  On balance, the GTA is best for most people's desires, esp with the integral subs.

I stopped posting because of the ridicule I received from many parties.  No problem--people can close their minds and miss out.  No loss to me--I have no commercial audio interests. They can spend several million bucks to try super duper electronics and dynamic speakers, but the GTA with modest components will still be superior, unless they like big boomy bass with its varying degrees of mud and thud.

I will only respond to people with open minds, which sadly is rare on this thread.
D'Agostino Progression integrated costs about the same as Diablo 300. How do they compare, I wonder ?
Well if you did that integrated amp shootout I suggested you could find out!
Simaudio 700i V2 vs Gryphon Diablo 300 would be a shootout I would very much to see happen.

Nobody on the net right now other than WC able to bring these two contenders to their full potential and explain to us the differences.
