My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

This thread used to be 100 times more active . Just a few of WC’s buddies defending him is all that is left. They keep telling ignore the trolls. But it seems everytime someone else chimes in...

Thanks pokey. Let's squash the worms.
Guys the video might not be working because youtube blocked it due to copyrights. I had a song from Fleetwood Mac in one of the videos I shot so give me time to edit it and take that part out of the video and reload it.
Hi WC, you mentioned just a few more amplifiers that interest you but I think  there are more than a few top amps you should listen to. Yes resale on some perhaps but with your connections Im sure the dealers would let you audition for a couple of weeks. Hell even here in Vietnam dealers will let you audition for at least a couple of weeks.

The list below are just off the top of my head and Im sure I missed a few that are reference quality and oh Ive been meaning to state that at any level not just reference level everything matters and it matter probably more on entry and mid level then reference level.

A true audiophile should be a tweaker and a tweaker's system well always outperform a plug and play guy.

FM Accoustics
Dartzel
Gryphon
Accuphase
Lamm
Vac
Niam
Aries Cerat
CH Precision
VTL
CAT
CJ
Atma-Sphere
Burmester
Vitus

Enjoying your videos and glad to see you finally got the speakers set up properly.

I picked up a very lightly used pair of Pass Labs Aleph 2's years ago, at the time I had Nagra VPA's with the matching VLP pre-amp, running thru Wilson Watt/puppy's. I didn't do much listening with the Aleph 2's until I sold the Nagra gear, I was and still am very impressed with the Aleph's,  gotta love that pure class A single ended sound, probably should think about getting them re-capped seeing as they getting up in age.
Hi WC, after watching your video of the Florida audio show through my modest system hooked up to my computer I took out my Grados to listen again. At least using this this modest setup the $7k Raven Audio system sounds so good. The more expensive Raven Audio system, again over my desktop system and via Grados, sounded only slightly better, because of the impact on lows of the subwoofer.
Hi,
I was impressed as well by them. Listen , for the money it is really great stuff. They stood out for me as well.
We still don’t know what happened with the Magico M series WC said would be imminently in his room. No one interested to know ? ...
WC, I am sorry for getting off track here, but I need to address Techno......Techno, I do not disagree about the things you said, in response to me. However, it is all part of whatever WC has been doing. He has stated, from a long time ago, he is a very impatient person, and as long as the equipment is out there, he wants to try it, and, as long as it is a piece ( s ) he can, again, buy low, and sell, at least, for a break even point. WC needs an audience, as he wants to share his findings ( and yes, buyers ), but again, this is all part of his " disease ". I read on another thread, that you have boosted your treble control on your Mc preamp to +8, and this sounds better to you. You also stated the preamp passed the straight wire bypass test. I did not come on that thread and put you down, or question your findings. However, I am here to say, your Mc preamp is faulted in many areas of SQ, and if you need to +8 on your treble control, something is significantly wrong with your system, or, your ears. I honestly do not know what all of the anger is that you show here, but, it likely tells me, you are a very unhappy listener, as well as, unhappy, in general, with something, in your life. I am offering my services to you, if you would like to PM me about improving your system, or, just need someone to talk to, as I have a background in psychology. You need help. Enjoy ! MrD.
@mrdecibel
Lol !!!!! Amen ! I just literally fell out of my chair from laughing so hard at what you just said. If you only knew how many people message me DAILY telling me to just leave those poisonous people alone and ignore them...... People ACTUALLY WANT for me to keep going and continue to share my findings. However , in life we gotta learn to take all the good with the bad and that's one tough pill to swallow.
That still does not answer what happened to the Magico M that were coming in. We are only asking for transparency here. Some fishy things been discovered more and more often around here , so the thread is not only saying ´´ honest journey for the addict’´ anymore...

Techno, again, I am not sure what your hang ups are. There have been many products, mentioned by WC, that he was working on getting, that have not come to fruition, whatever the reasons. These are not " secrets to be discovered ". Fishy things ? Take a deep breadth, relax, and understand, as it is crystal clear what he is about. He is an audio-gear-aholic, and hurts no one.
Thank you @mrdecibel :)
Someone has to go and check their treble control on the McIntosh preamp ..
Exact quote , WC.

«  Boulder is gone. Needed to finance the magico m3. Will end up getting another boulder later this year.
Why haven't I sold my nordost Odin 1 pcs? I haven't found another cable that can give me this performance for the money. How about the Esoteric k1? Well yes it is going to be listed soon. How about the pass xs 300s? Because it's one hell of an amp and until I can find something that can come in here and beat it, I don't think I'll move them. How about the focals or Wilson's or magico ? Focals are for sale , Wilson alexia might be for sale and im sure the magico m3 will too. Why ? Because I could end up with a Wilson alexx at some point and I need money to buy such expensive speaker. «

Simple question, no throling, just a simple interrogation for everyone to know.

Techno so people can't change their minds? Maybe other pieces with great prices come up before those you mention? Maybe WCSS hears something else that peeks his curiosity? Maybe someone offers him a price for a piece he wasn't going to sell right away but there's an opportunity? Maybe.......
Techno....get over yourself. What is the big deal ? As you may know, I am a retired audio consultant, with a background in psychology. Are you in love with WC ? Maybe, just a high school infatuation ? Why can’t you leave it alone ? This is a hobby, and an enjoyable pass time, for all of us. Listening to music, both recorded, and live, is extremely important to me, as I am sure, it is for you. What don’t you get ? WC is a young gun, and is enjoying this hobby, his way. Are you happy with your sound system ? Do you wish you can afford some of the gear WC has had ? How deep, are your feelings ? Really.....we are listening.
The quote says the Magico M3 were financed by selling the Boulder pre. The quote then says the the Magico will be for sale too.

How come, in this normal world where normal physics apply, can someone SALE a pair of FINANCED Magicos if they never made it in...in the first place ? Lol Only Wall Street speculators can move things like this...

Maple already answered I guess. We are obviously being lied.
Same feeling when you enter a car showroom and the dealer starts the sale speach...
@techno

"Same feeling when you enter a car showroom and the dealer starts the sale speach..."

There are a several differences...first, the car salesman can typically spell...second, one typically doesn't return to the dealer where they believe they were lied to...so, if you feel that you were somehow deceived, you might find joy in not returning to this thread (but I'm guessing like a moth to flame....). As a matter of fact, it's highly likely your absence from this thread would upset exactly no one.

Finally, and I can't speak for everyone but I'll wager I could speak for most following this thread, get over it, I'm capable of protecting myself so I don't require you looking out for me. I enjoy WCSS and his efforts to own and hear everything. I'm not looking for him to chart me a course, its just entertainment.
techno__dude,
So, I was actually wondering if we would hear about the M3 as well and what was happening with the M3. But, we’re human, we change our mind, we make decisions daily, and sometimes they don’t go the way we thought originally. It’s not lying - it’s just part of the journey, part of the many decisions that WC has to make for himself. He needs to do what he wants to do, no what we want him to do.

Look at it this way, if WC was just in it to build up equipment and then sell it for himself or for a dealer, then why didn’t he spend the time to post/video and build up the M3? What’s so suspicious here?

The problem is that you think this thread is about you and/or the rest of us, and you feel the obligation to report any misdeeds. The truth is, this thread isn’t about you or us, it’s about WC and his journey for trying out equipment - simple as that.

True - he does not necessarily want to hold onto something long term.
True - he wants to buy equipment for the lowest possible price.
True - he probably wants to sell it for the highest possible price.
True - he is working with dealers at times to get this equipment.
True - he will probably tell us he’s going to do something and then change his mind and not do it. That’s his perogative - it’s his journey.
For those of us who are here, we understand the above truths, and we choose to be here.
Dave

Just my gut feeling, but based on t_d's continual misuse of punctuation, misspelled words, poor grammar and constant whining....not so sure we're dealing with an adult here.
Just unsubscribed to this thread as it has been hijacked and no longer worthwhile following. Thanks to all the turds.

Thank you so much for your comments and having my back. Let’s put the final nail in the coffin and begin to focus on carrying on what we all have been doing through the years. Remember, i am not the entire effort here and i could not do this without you all. You guys are what makes me want to keep pushing and continuing to do what i do. Thanks a bunch !
Moving on:
So as you all know, i have been using my Constellation Taurus monos and Pictor 3 preamp with the optional DC filter for the last 2 weeks now. I also added Cardas Cleary Beyond XL power cords on the mono blocks and that elevated their bass performance as well as the soundstage. That said, i have to admit one thing about Constellation amps: They are very moody for some reason. One day, they blow you away and then a few days later they don't have the same effect. This was the same exact issue i had with the ARC REF10 when i had it and the Lampizator Pacific. I have never really experienced this phenomenon with other solid state gear - only with Constellation.
Anyhow, i have said it many times, this is a luxman on steroids. Big, bold, awesome control, soundstage width, depth, and just the perfect amount of sweetness while retaining resolution.
If you have speakers that could use more resolution, more detail, more sparkle, more life in general, i 100% recommend constellation. However, if you own speakers that already have detail by design, you can still use constellation, BUT you must be very careful with cables. You need to tweak here and there in order to "relax" the overall presentation.
If you own panels, YOU MUST TRY CONSTELLATION by any means. TRUST ME on this.

Coming next, i will unveil the newest member of my system :)
Is there anything you all want me to do on my next videos? maybe a cable shootout? Odin 1 speaker cables vs Audiomica Consequence?
How about comparisons between using a preamp in the mix and then just using the DAC direct into the amps?  I am open to suggestions so let me hear everyone's input so i can see what is feasible on my end.
thank you guys!
Traduction:

The Constellation Taurus monos are bright, so you need the fat and rolled off Cardas Clear Beyond cables to tame them. This is a beginner tweak, just can’t believe it at these levels of gear...

Each review, it’s the same song again...

« theses are Luxman on steroids » , it seems all the amps reviewed lately are Luxman on steroids.
« Midrange sweetness . » , Any amp lately that did not have just the right amount of sweetness ? Nope, I don’t remember one...
You forgot «  liquid sounding » this time WC...
Guys ,
Let's ignore and continue this together. Please let me know about what I asked above. Give me ideas
@whitecamaross

i had a similar view of my more modest Hegel H590 with KEF Reference 1 setup (One day, they blow you away and then a few days later they don't have the same effect) until I added a quality power conditioner (Isotek Evo3 Nova). Now.... Consistent silent, dynamic, involving sound. Worth a shot.
@4425
Unfortunately that is not possible on these forums...

@keoliphant
I have the shunyata Denali 6000t so maybe I'll try it and report back. Thanks for the tip..
That would be a great speaker cable comparison WC O1 vs mica vs any other on the same system.
I do find it amazing how many people have vowed to abandon the thread only to return within hours or days. You have created something spellbinding!!
WC....I would have to disagree with you on the personality change, due to the equipment ( unless defective, or very poorly designed ). Our systems are susceptible to many things. Humidity, temperature, and some other incidentals, can effect the speaker drivers linearity in operation, and I have read articles on this ( they are on line ). Even though you might have a dedicated, isolated and very stupendous electrical system powering your gear, you are still dealing with drop outs, noise and other inconsistencies, from the grid, that can also effect the equipment, demonstrated by keoliphant and his Hegel. Computers in another room, power supplies for phones, florescent and led bulbs, RF contamination, microwaves, appliance motors, etc., can all effect the sq ( from a neighboring house, as well ). Tube gear ( all gear can, but especially tube gear, and tubes themselves ) can be effected by airborne microphonics ( I have experienced this many times ), as well as isolation, or lack of, of the gear. But once a product has truly broken in, I have found consistency in sq. Because I listen daily, I leave my gear on 24 / 7. We all know, some gear can be effected more than others; an example would be, more or less of a change, with one amplifier vs. another, when going through a conditioner ( the Hegel above ). Not to neglect our ears / brain mechanism’s, the pressurization that goes on, and, our moods, which can be triggered by a meal, fluids in our bodies, extreme thoughts, and of course, exhaustion, either mental, or physical. I hope this all makes some sense, as, I am tired...........later........
mrdecibel

I concur with your assessment as above. I only wish to add to WC that he sessions the same time each date, especially, night time.

Happy Listening!
whitecamaross

Are you in a position to hear your system after midnight?
To my ears, this is the best time for critical evaluation.

Happy Listening!
Mrdecibel and jafant, simply and gently put as possible, as a colleague of mine use to say, "your over egging the omelet".
I've got an idea guys,
How about I do a cable shootout but I won't say which cable is playing so that this way there is zero people being biased ? I think that would be more interesting ? It would you be you guys the ones that will say which sound you like better and then I'll disclose which sound you preferred best !
No offense to you personally but I suspect you don’t know how to conduct a scientifically meaningful cable shootout.

Hmmm... Scientific shootout?! ... As in ensuring that Geoff's Clever Little Clocks, Brilliant Pebbles, and third-party cute little pyramids infused by quantum-dots are "scientifically" placed in the music room? *Grins!*

If you get fine external microphones, you could demonstrate the subtle differences between cables, etc.  Right now I don't think it will be possible, although you can certainly try.  Meanwhile, you could choose a very few musical selections so that we can tell differences in speakers from video to video.  Even using different music, I could still hear the superior clarity of the Focal vs Alexia, although it would have been more dramatic using the same music.  Also, the video before the Florida show had a nice song with introductory sparkling instruments.  The natural SPL of this music is 70-80 dB, so going for clarity at these levels is still the most important musical priority rather than abusive blasting SPL's.  In the video of the Florida show, the Muraudio is playing a solo cello piece, Johann Sebastian Bach Cello Suite no. 1, BWV 1007, first section.  Natural live levels here heard 10-15 feet away in a small hall are 50-60 dB.  This music is subtle and dry, but excitement is gained from appreciating the delicate bow strokes, so absolute clarity is mandatory.  A more exciting Bach piece is the Suite no. 5, BWV 1011, first section.  The cello plays its lowest note at 64 Hz, at louder natural levels of 80 dB.  The cello is a very wide ranging instrument, with harmonics up to 10,000 Hz, so clarity is paramount in order to appreciate the growl and buzz of the total sound.  Here is where great tweeters bring out the harmonics of the bass notes.
Cable shoot out via iPhone's? My guess is the one that has the "hotter" top end wins! Not the one that sounds the most natural. But go ahead and let the test begin.

More seriously, WC.A blind cable shootout seems an excellent idea to me... I have no idea if I will be able to tell the difference between cables, given all the encoding/decoding and inevitable degradation along the various transforms and transmission. But, if you do not try, all I will be left with are my own pre-conceived conjectures.

Saluti, G.

@viber6
I doubt he will get a fine external microphone, as there is no profit to be made in doing so.

If he did, I agree we could ear differences.
WC,
I like the idea of a shootout as you mentioned, without knowing which one is which (until revealed later - maybe a separate video or later in the same video). No matter what you do, there will be folks who will find fault with the test. You won’t be able to satisfy everyone, because there are so many variables, including the room, the speakers, electronics, etc, let alone the recording device. Another variable is the device that folks use to listen to it.

I would recommend that you do the shootout and then provide your opinion on what you are hearing and the differences you are hearing. After all, that’s why we’re here - to hear your opinion and the way that you are able to articulate the sonics and the results of the combinations of equipment and cabling. That will end up being more important and what I come here for - rather than a good recording device. I have no doubt that a better recording device will be better than an iphone, but it still won’t compare to what you are able to share.

Dave
