My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation,etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Another user of Audiomica Labs cables but I use the Ultra Reference models which are just below what WCSS is using. They make music period. Glad others are finding out of this company.
@riaa.
My stomach is hurting from laughing so hard. Lol..
You seem to be the only person who can keep these 2 under control.. they will now go and hide and then come out of their holes to bite again. I might hire you and pay you a fee to be my personal online bouncer.
I still remember the story about those granite bases... That was hysterical ....
Oh yes, RIAA controls me. LOL
I am not hiding from anybody. I am firing up my Lava Lamps right now .!
RIAA is just hateful . You can see it in his responses to people.

@chazzzy007

Please, all, ignore the Trolls. They've said all they need to say.

OK, let the thread get back on track.
Then let the pump and dump resume.
Just remember, we are always watching to protect the inexperienced that could be wrongly influenced.
Thanks pokey 77

Where the hell were you man? Thanks for slapping these 2 clowns.
Much appreciated
Ok soooo.. who is going to the Florida show this weekend ? I am going to go listen to a few speakers that strike my interest. I also want to hear the magico m6 being driven by luxman 900u in mono configuration.

@grey9hound

It’s the Pearl Harbor of threads. The fanboys suddenly don’t know what just hit them.

I thought the Magico were in WC’s room. Is it just me ? Maybe the dealer friend just sold the pair before WC had time to play with them...
whitecamaross - when you get time, would you compare the best amplifiers you owned?
The Pass XS-300, The Constellation Taurus and The Block Audio - maybe others?
I realize you're heading to a show - maybe when you return?
I'm really interested in this comparison and would be very grateful to gain any insight you'd share.
Hope you have a safe, enjoyable trip :-)
@tjassoc
Yep. I owe you that. I know you asked me a few days ago and I will try to do it over the weekend.
Funny private message I just received:

"Those guys are ridiculous, are they thread superheros, saving us sheep from the mighty whitecamaross..."

LMAO. That was such a great comment. Yes they are indeed saving you all little kids from the wolf of Wall Street whitecamaross !!
Can we just collectively ignore the trolls.  Stop feeding them.  If you ignore their comments they will eventually stop with all of their nonsense and conspiracy theories.  Most of use really enjoy WC's journey, lets not let the few ruin the experience.
We are all part of the experience. That’s the beauty of an Audiogon audio forum. Live , pump the big $ dealer friend gear, dump the big $ dealer friend gear, repeat, face the critics of a fishy review, repeat.
@tjassoc
ok so i know you wanted me to add a comparison of a few amps. Now keep in mind, these amps were used with different speakers and in different systems (they were not compared at the same time with the same exact components):

Block Audio SE: Incredible muscularity. I found this particular amplifier line doing some research and everything i dug up was actually very true. It had tremendous control over my Neoliths along with liquidity (class A of course). The construction is impressive, it does not run as hot as pass labs or even the Dag m400s. I can’t really find a single negative thing to say about this particular amplifier. It is not a well known brand here in U.S. but rest assured it will blow your mind. I am hearing from the person i sold them to that this amp blew away his Rowland 925s, arc 160m and other amps i can’t remember right now. He can’t seem to let go of them because they just continue to impress.

Pass Labs XS300: What can i say about this amp that i haven’t already said? The walls come down, speakers disappear, huge soundstage, bass control, mids are beautiful. One knock is that this amp NEEDS quality power cords. Yes, the difference between using stock pcs and nordost 1 was staggering EVEN THOUGH it has external power supplies. i called pass labs and gave them that feedback as well. I had 3 people come over to listen to them and do this power cord swap and the change in sound was DRASTIC. Another knock is the heat... yes the run hot, but that is because they are always biased at full throttle. Lastly, they take time to sound best... You can’t judge these beasts right away. You need at least 24 hours of play time before they really hit their sweet spot.

Dan D Agostino M400s: Gorgeous looking amps with such a sex appeal that remains unmatched in my book. They sound extremely inviting, smooth, a little more relaxed than the xs300s and yes they do run hot, but not XS300 hot. Amazing feathery-silky smooth highs. I believe this amp needs to be carefully matched with speakers. Personally, i would not match it with electrostatics, but that is me. One knock? the finish is difficult to keep shiny and clean. I have also received reports from owners that the finish does begin to fade over time so if you get these amps please pay extreme care to the finish and keep it as clean as possible.

Constellation amps: i had the constellation Centaur 2 and now own the Taurus mono blocks. This amp was easily one of the very best amps i have ever heard my Neoliths. It has tons of air, big sound, musicality and lots of resolution. I have always said this and i will repeat myself again: THIS AMP IS THE LUXMAN ON STEROIDS. It really reminds me A LOT of the luxman, but with bigger, bolder sound. As far as knocks, i would say that the "vanilla" looks might not appeal to some of you. However, i have had people here that totally love how they look because they don’t call attention to themselves. Cable matching is crucial and i would say wireworld platinum cables or audiomica consequence cables really make it shine. I am not totally sold on Nordost odin 1 and constellation as far as synergy.

Amplifier XXX: This amp is here now. I am quite impressed by its large presentation, liquidity and visceral bottom end control. More to come on this amp :)

In short, there is no universal law that will always pay you dividends when it comes to amplifiers. That, my friends, is something you all need to remember when swapping power amplifiers.
Yes that preamp, cables or speakers you have right now MIGHT NOT be a match for your next amp purchase, but there is no way to find out unless you bring it home (tell me about it :). Remember, 9 times out of 10 you will have to probably also change something else when you introduce a new component in the mix. Don’t be afraid to try and figure out what else you can do to improve on that amplifier purchase and be a little more flexible with cabling as well. I know some of you are die hard nordost fans, cards fans, ( i have spoken to some of you) and let me just say that you should be open to experimentation with other cable lines. i am now doing this more than ever and my findings continue to impress me.

With that said, my top tier group of amps in no particular order are: (yes all solid state :) )

Pass xs300
Block Audio
Dag M400s

So don't understand you WCSS when you say the best amps are those 3 yet you sold them and now own Taurus mono blocks! I understand you can't keep everything but wouldn't you at least keep one of the 3 "best"?
(And no you don't have to explain yourself this is more of a rhetorical question)
@rsf507
I review and move on. :)
I could easily say my Taurus are better than those amps above but that’s not true. I still say what I liked best even though I no longer own them. That’s exactly what my journey should be.
I can always go back to what I liked down the road. I’m the same with cars. I love the Corvette z06 but I’d love to own the Dodge demon and if I have to trade in the z06 for it then so be it. I can always go back.
I don't fall in love with material things. I can appreciate them, be impressed and enjoy until something else grabs my attention. Sometimes I gamble and end up going backwards but I see that as a learning experience. Imagine if I kept the xs300, dag momentum and block audio ? That's a boat load of money to keep tied up so if I want to try something else then I need to sacrifice what I have. Think about it, I usually have 2 amps at a time to compare and then one is sold so I can bring the next one I want to try and so forth. That said, I'm running out of amp choices but I will expand on this on a later post
I have to laugh at the few who seem to be outraged to discover only now that the OP is a gear slut, when that was the entire premise of the thread from the beginning.
@p59 outraged? I think not envy yes. I'd love to move gear in and out like WCSS but that's never happening. I'm actually happy for WCSS it's a GREAT journey.
@rsf507

« I review and move on . »
You have to read between the lines.
´´He reviews , and resales for a profit or his dealer connexion resales. ´´
Does it make it a bad thread, absolutely not. It’s just that no gear really gets frankly reviewed...just like in the magazines...he always conclude the gear is all good, nothing is bad compared to the other and alway a matter of preference,  there is always only small differences, we never get to know the flaws of a piece...
Once the gear is long gone, if we are lucky we may learn the real flaws of a piece.

Best example is the ML Neoliths. They were rolled off in the high frequencies, as WC said on his youtube video. Go back this thread and he NEVERS mention this. A flaw of major importance for a potential buyer with deep pockets.

Thanks for that summary - much appreciated :-)
When you get back, and if I'm not pushing my luck, could you do that with the top speakers you've owned?
We've invested in Wilson and I'd like to get your review of the Focals and the Martin Logans. I heard both a long time ago and was VERY impressed with the ML's.
Hope you have a safe, enjoyable trip. Best to you - TJF
I for one DO hope that you keep buying and selling[and making money if possible] to keep this Thread Going.It's like the War and Peace of Threads.Also,I do not need to be protected from your Capitalistic Revenueing that is essential to your continued journey in this matter.I hope you Buy Low and Sell High!I do imagine you take some losses now and then but that's the nature of the Beast.Keep it up "Wolf of Wall Street WhiteCamaross"
Thank you axememan. You might want to repeat that statement above in capital letters so that some people can get that message clear in their heads.
Not one person here has stated they care if whitecamaross makes money selling gear . Free country . Sell away for profit . Do not lie to people though .
+1 maplegrovemusic

The critics could have been avoided if WC was transparent.
I may not be a strong admirer of WC, as I am about the " music ", and he is about the " playing with the equipment ". I went through this stage, as WC is still experiencing it, and, at a grande scale. BUT, Lying to us ? Transparency ? Are you all kidding yourselves ? WC has always been clear about buying at the lowest price possible, to avoid a monetary loss, and to sell, so he can bring in other gear. This is all part of his journey, and actually, pretty common in this hobby. It is of no one’s business what he pays for something, because many here who follow him, have been, and are, potential buyers. Most of this crap being said is childish, and like WC has stated so many times.....if you feel it is not to your liking, don’t be part of his thread. If I am missing something, please, enlighten me, but, not here. I do not see what all the BS is all about. Although I have not learned anything here ( except for the perception of what one man hears ), I find this journey entertaining. Just my thoughts. Enjoy ! MrD.
Stay tuned guys. I will be uploading a video of the Florida audio show that took place this past weekend
@mrdecibel

Sorry but we don’t fall for the ´´ It ´s about the journey’´ anymore.
I’ll tell you what it’s about.
It’s about promoting the Pass Labs XS , Alexia 1s, and Dag M400 and reselling them a soon as a big fish with deep pockets gets interested. How could it be about the journey if the journey with those pieces was so brief... It is not about discovering the gear, taking time with it and letting it flourish. It’s about trying, showing, telling, and if a deal comes...then it’s SELL and the heck with the journey.

Think about it, the room... It’s not a lab, it’s a dealer ´´show room upgrade ´´.
I have a lot of respect for Audiogon commercial users that write on the forum. They don’t hide behind a normal user account. They are being honest upfront.
