My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation,etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Now, make sure the Aurender has an excellent PC and is sitting on some really good 3rd party feet.  I use Nordost sort Kones BC on my n100 4tb with Frey2 pc and Tyr2 usb,  others use still points and I’m sure there are other options as well.  Also I would rather have Valhalla 2 or Odin pc  but these are not in my current budget.  The Aurenders are benefitted by all of these.  Enjoy the music!
Thanks for that bit of info @blumartini

I tried getting on one of your cable threads but after 5 or 6 pages of posters blowing it up by arguing I just couldn't continue following. 😟
Do you have any experience with the old Mirantz 1060 solid state?  They can be had rebuilt on ebay for about $500.

They have click stop tone controls for trebble,  mid and bass and accomodate two speaker systems.

@whitecamaross

I have an N10 myself and can say it does work very well. I wish the W20SE were in my ballpark because it is that much better. The N10 will have to do but I can vouch for how well it works.
Anybody on this thread compare the Sonore Signture Rendu SE Optical with the digital music servers that are being mentioned here. You can use your internally electrically noisy laptops with the Rendu. You put a fibre optical cable into the Sonore network pathway and even less noise.

Computer Audiophiles Product of the Decade. Maybe those propeller heads at CA know a thing or 2 about digital audio.

Yes, WC and I see eye to eye on many of his evaluations and testimonies.
+1 yyzsantabarbara

I am a regular follower of Audiophilestyle web site specialized in audiophile computer setups and audio gear. I currently own the Sonore OpticalRendu combined with the OpticalModule. This setup is nearly the equivalent of the Sonore Signature Rendu SE Optical you are referring to.

One of their concept is to isolate the upstream noise coming from the home network router, using galvanic isolation provided by the optical connection. I previously used the UltraRendu ( Ethernet/USB converter) and could not believe the improvement when I purchased the OpticalRendu/OpticalModule.

It was a huge audio improvement (less veil, increase in low level details/bass). It is like accessing the master recording of the track you are listening. I thought my system was good prior to this purchase...Believe me, there is a lot of crap coming from your home network which affects the audio stream. I have a very simple home network (Cable modem + WiFi/Ethernet router + PC) and when I installed the Rendu optical network, it just brought life to my music. It is a huge improvement and relative inexpensive upgrade.

The Sonore Signature Rendu SE Optical is even better than my current optical setup according to AudiophileStyle forum members. It is an approved Roon endpoint.

@WCSS,
Glad you moved up to a more suitable front end (Aurender N10) for your system. It's amazing what a quality streamer/server can do to the overall sound of ones system.

Sooo about 2 weeks ago I posted a question to you asking why in the world you would upgrade from Nordost Odin1 power cords to Odin 2 power cords before adding Odin1 interconnects to your system. Your response was because you thought O1 was a little too bright and would add too much silver to your system......Have your thoughts changed?
@ron17.
I added that because I was offered one Odin 2 PC locally And I jumped on it. The dealer let me borrow it and I was able to hear the differences so it made sense for me. I haven’t seen many Odin interconnects for sale either but when I come up on one that makes sense then I’ll most likely try it.
Often times I try stuff that I wasn’t even looking for but it comes knocking at my door and if it makes sense then I try it. For instance, I wasn’t looking for another dac to replace my esoteric but one came to me locally and now I have it. It’s the same for Wilson alexia 1, magico, etc.
I’m looking to buy the dcs upsampler right now but if you called me up and told me you have a gryphon mephisto at a great deal then I’d jump on it and forget the upsampler for the time being.
This is why I do not use a laptop as a digital transport. I use a tower pc , and a IFi iusb power to not transmit any noise from the computer to the dac inlet. I also use the Fidelizer software that shuts down everything that is not audio needed to transmit the audio files.

If one uses a pc also, never use the accessories side usb outlets. Always use the main ones that are conected to the mother board.
Ive been a member of ComputerAudiophile for a couple of years. now called Audiophilestyle and yes my system has been tweaked around all there advise for Networking, Networked Audio and Streaming especially fiber optical ( FMC,s) and complete isolation of all devices in the chain yields results that will surprise you.

Highly recommend no it mandatory for anyone streaming or networking to read the entire 92 pages of info and implement everything you can if your serious about audio.
Ok guys ,
Long overdue but today marks a new beginning.
I have uploaded my first YouTube video which was shot Jan 2 2020.
Here is the link and please subscribe since you all will be the force behind my channel. Thank you for following me throughout the years. I can't thank you all enough.

https://youtu.be/4yU2lGJuLeA

Nice post WC, I subscribed and was hoping to hear some tunes' at least some background music to get a sense of whats to come.
@whitecamaross

I wanted to be the 1st. to congratulate you on your new beginning with YouTube. I have observed you since the very beginning of time and have personally witnessed your risk and sacrifices to get where you are today. I am sure all on this thread and soon your new YouTube channel will see the benefits of growing through your hard knock efforts.

Thank you for making the effort to share!

My Best,
BluMartini

That’s awesome WC. Really cool to hear and see. Your point at the end playing music via the channel is well taken.
That was my plan but then I thought about violation of copyrights etc etc so I didn't add anything. I will add music clips on future videos. For now I am digging up old pictures from when I started this journey.
I don’t think you need to play music but would suggest just jumping right in with little more emotion like your posts on this forum. Little too dry. Think Guttenberg or McGowan presentation wise in terms of grabbing attention. I know, easy for me to say. Just offering a suggestion, not meant to criticize. Good first effort. Good luck with this!! But don’t stop posting here though either
Just cued up the video. Great first effort. Very eager to see new content and to hear about the past so we can be informed on where you are heading. Of course, I've read the entire thread, but I expect there'll be new and exciting insight as well as being reminded of things I read two or three years ago.

For clarification, is the Boulder pre gone?
The Boulder pre is gone. The best pre he owned. This thread is not about owning the best gear anymore, it has become about moving the gear now...

Sure has the voice of a salesman ? on yt.
Boulder is gone. Needed to finance the magico m3. Will end up getting another boulder later this year.
Why haven't I sold my nordost Odin 1 pcs? I haven't found another cable that can give me this performance for the money. How about the Esoteric k1? Well yes it is going to be listed soon. How about the pass xs 300s? Because it's one hell of an amp and until I can find something that can come in here and beat it, I don't think I'll move them. How about the focals or Wilson's or magico ? Focals are for sale , Wilson alexia might be for sale and im sure the magico m3 will too. Why ? Because I could end up with a Wilson alexx at some point and I need money to buy such expensive speaker.
Is this detailed enough for you all ?

Best pre, or amp, or powercord, or dac, or car, etc. It all gets sold in order for me to move forward . I don’t hang on to anything period. It is in my nature. Do I need to be any clearer ? I mean I don’t know how else to say it? Should I hire someone else to come here and translate ? It all gets sold whether it is in a week, a month, a year, etc so that I can use this money to buy the next thing I am interested in. I’m not sure what’s hard to comprehend for some of you ? I know most of you get it and don’t care since it’s clearly not impacting your life or taking food off your table but others take it like it’s a crime , illegal activity, etc. That said , those that are bothered by this should pitch in and send me some money so I can finance the next $250,000 amplifier I’m sure I’ll review someday. How’s that for a change ?

Anyhow enough said.

Sorry, but in my opinion this thread has become a bit of a joke, actually a large joke, a lap top!!! I hope the u tube can support your ego;

I'm out,

Don

Don’t sweat it WC. They’re just tweaking you and you’re taking the bait. Ignore it. You’ve explained yourself many times. Regular readers get it
YouTube will certainly help me ignore many people. I'm actually very excited about that.

@kren0006

Yep, you are right. All us regular readers do know. WC, keep up the excellent work and thread.
Thanks to all of you who have subscribed to the channel. Next week will be the very first big amplifier shootout of the year. I've finally been able to bring home the long awaited amp:

Dan Agostino momentum m400s ($65,000)
Vs
Pass labs xs300 ($85,000)

This video will be posted later in the future since I want to first layout my journey and do a little more of an introduction of other amps, speakers I've spent time with, preamps etc. I'm trying to gather pictures and videos from everything I've had and talk a little about what I remember until I catch up to what im currently playing with.
Big things to come down the road for sure.

"I don’t hang on to anything period. It is in my nature."

  I hope your wife doesn't read this thread. Next time you go to work there might be a Yard Sale at your house going on....I want to be there for that one!! Hey Lady...I'll give you 5K for those Pass Labs amps and Im doing you a favor  :)

WC,
I totally respect your interest in trying many things and the need to sell to finance the next purchase.  I actually like the dignity of your voice on the video, which shows the seriousness of your quest.  You're a great speaker (pun intended), lol.

BTW, what is the business model of having a youtube channel, and how does our subscribing help you?
  Once he hits 1000 Subscribers I promised to send him a coupon good for a box of a dozen Dunkin Donuts. How's that for an Incentive?
It’s not about whats the best for the money anymore. It’s about the ego, it’s about showing the gear his dealer close relations are going to sell, it’s about ´´  ... you know at this level all is good , it’s just different you know ´´...

Troll,

So let me get this straight. You went into hibernation for almost a year...then came back just to hurl nothing but inflammatory remarks at the OP? Whats the point?  If you dont like how he conducts his hobby obsession, his business practice or whatever why not just MOVE ON and go elsewhere?  A shrink would have a field day with this behavior. He's not attacking you and there is certainly enough cannon fodder in that area to choose from if he wanted to go that route. He's taking the high road....why don't you try it?  Just crawl away in peace with some dignity if thats possible.

Ok sorry , I was a bit rude I admit.
This thread is still very good. I guess we will have to keep enjoying the revealing of differences between the gear, instead of knowing which one is good or bad. It’s a bit sad, because that way we try to read between the lines, and that often brings confusion into the discussion . Anyway, that’s the way it’s going to be, will have to live with it.

theophile , we are all contributing mostly nothing to this thread. Think about it, it’s about WC’s journey. All we can do is give opinions and advice. You don’t like mine, just block me and be happy again.
@whitecamaross

Nice 2nd video!
Little bit of advice. Find out what exactly the reviewers are using when they are at the big shows and invest into that. The audio clarity on their videos are several steps up from yours and it's important for us to hear as much of your system's sound Quality as we possibly can.

Have a great weekend! 🍻🍻🍻
@riaa
That's an imposter techno dud. One of the jealous scrubs from this thread made a similar account to keep trolling under another username.
Yep better effort on 2nd one. Nice work. That’s what we want to hear.  Descriptions of gear’s characteristics and how it compares to other stuff you’ve had.
No Chazzzy....thats the real deal in the flesh. I'd bet my Dag 400's on it.  Oh wait...I dont own those anymore. Nevermind
Was first to watch the 2nd video. Much better than the first by the way.

Very interesting to know the Focal Scala Evos are amp friendly and never need the Pass XS 300 to get out of their class A range. Compared to the Dyn and Wilson.
