WC, Even though you don’t have 2 Odin powercords to compare with 2 AQ Dragon HC’s, you can learn something by using the AQ in the left channel and Odin in the right. Listen to the music from the right channel, especially from older recordings with ping pong imaging, that is, exaggerated L/R separation. You will still find that the AQ has more detail than the Odin. Another thing to do would be to listen to just 1 speaker in mono with AQ versus Odin. Do this for the left speaker and then the right. This illustrates that the $48K Odin pair is way overpriced with inferior performance compared to the AQ Dragon HC pair at $18K. Even the Vallhalla 2 didn’t produce sound good enough for you to spend that money. My experience with Frey 2 was similar. All in all, I feel that Nordost in general is overpriced and hyped at the same time. Save your money for acoustical treatments and the best 12 speakers which will have a far greater benefit. Go, AQ!
|
Who determines what's overpriced? The answer in my opinion is the end user. If I have the money to spend $50K on a cable and I think it's worth it compared to other cables I've heard, that's all that matters. The end user determines what the greater benefits are based on their preferences, equipment, and room. I have room treatment, but I can't suggest what would have the most impact on WC's or anyone's system. |
WC, it has been my experience, with my client base, that any of them wanting 2 channel music, to be at it's best, would find a way to have 2 separate systems, another, of course, for home theater. This was my point. As much as you have spent on the 2 channel gear, why would you not want to have a 100 %, perfectly designed 2 channel audio room, but are willing to make a few sacrifices. No one considers 9K power cords, willing to accept compromise, or to sacrifice details that the cords themselves brings out. I wish you the best, always. Enjoy ! MrD. |
Viber, i think you are assuming A LOT with your previous statement about the AQ having more detail and the odin being overpriced. i can't really say that myself and i have both here in my home. This is WHY i made it clear that i DO NOT have 20a odin powercords to do a fair comparison. Having one mono connected with one cable and the other mono with a different cable does not really help you gauge things ESPECIALLY with cables of this caliber. Now, if you told me to connect one amazon powercord in one amp and a 9k pc on the other amp then that would be different, but at this level of gear it becomes HARDER to pick them apart. The gaps ARE NOT HUGE between these components. |
@viber6
Here you go again, giving advice and opinions that you have no personal experience with. You said:
"Listen to the music from the right channel, especially from older recordings with ping pong imaging, that is, exaggerated L/R separation. You will still find that the AQ has more detail than the Odin."
How would you know that? Have you performed this exact experiment? The OP said he didn't have (2) 20a Odin1 power cords to use for the amps so he couldn't actually compare the Nordost to the Audioquest cables on his amps. You said:
"This illustrates that the $48K Odin pair is way overpriced with inferior performance compared to the AQ Dragon HC pair at $18K." Inferior performance? Based on what? Again the OP was not able to A/B 20a Audioquest cables with Nordost cables on his amps because he didn't have any 20a Nordost cables. You were doing so well over the last couple of weeks....Maybe it's time to take another little break.

Ok, so in regards to my room: i would love to just make it a 2 channel room, but I KNOW MYSELF and i wont sit down there for 12 hours straight listening to music. At some point, i will want to switch gears and distract myself with a show on Netflix or a movie, etc. Some days i am tired and i don't want to listen to music because i can't hear really well (that is normal when i am tired), but maybe i am in the mood to sip on a drink and watch a kick @ss movie like John Wick. i would like to share with my family a few movie nights without having to go to a movie theater all the time. i HATE watching movies on a tv unless it is just a movie that i don't care about. i go to the movies about 5 times a month with my wife so YES it would make sense to have a theater room in there because i know it will get as much action as my 2 channel rig. Lastly, even if there is interaction with surround speakers and my 2 channel experience being impacted by it, I STILL THINK that it will sound better than in my current room no matter what. i will be able to add acoustic treatment there, put speakers upside down if i feel like it. i would be able to try ANYTHING i want in there which isn't something i can freely do in my current room. i am right now considering spending money on in wall speakers for the entire room including front left, center and front right which might end up behind a perforated 120 inch screen. i am visualizing turning on my home theater and not having to use a single component/speaker from my 2 channel. i am not planning to use the neoliths for front left and front right. Instead i want to buy some efficient in wall speakers that will be right behind the wall and the screen and maybe a Denon 8500H 13.2 receiver to drive all in wall speakers. This will allow me to not have to spend $10k on a processor and then another $20k in multichannel amps. My goal is to NOT overspend on the amp/processor because i need to buy the following:
- 4k projector -120 inch perforated screen -furniture (stands, chairs, etc) -probably longer xlr runs for my 2 channel which won't be cheap since i am using platinum 7 xlr and i want to keep it in the platinum models -about 6-8 in wall speakers ( i already have about 6 Martin logan in ceiling) - 2 Jl audio subwoofers (probably F113s)
Do the math above and tell me approximately how much money i am talking about... |
WC, did you have a chance to compare Odin speaker cables with Wireworld platinum 7 or 8? If you did, can you report your findings? Thanks. |
Just out of curiosity is there any practical way to cover the surround speakers to avoid any of the negative impact when listening to 2ch?
|
I got rid of my M&K/SVS HT system with JVC projector and 110" Stewart screen years ago and never returned. Big plasmas and 2.0 HT replaced it, and honestly, turned out better as I watch more football than movies and still go to the theater once a month when I want to see James Bond in 40 channel surround sound with 100 subs. The issue with huge screens is it limits your speaker location. Logans might have more directional challenges than dynamic drivers requiring a center channel though.
You should definitely hire a 2ch/HT acoustics guy if going this route- check out Nyal Mellor, Chris Huston, etc.
|
Odin 1 Speaker cable vs Wireworld Platinum: the odin 1 has more of a natural presentation with tighter bass control. It does not have the same soundstage size as the Platinum 8, but you don’t find yourself missing anything either. I will say that the Odin WILL be more transparent and if you have crappy cabling or a front end, it will not forgive you. The Platinum 8 speaker cables will sound great and is more of an "easier to live with" cable because it won’t hold it against you if you dont have expensive cabling throughout the system. I also find the Odin a bit more liquid in sound and clarity. One thing though, the Odin speaker cable needs at least 450 hours of break-in time or else you will hear quite a bit of brightness. Easier to live with? the wireworld Platinum 8 if you dont want to get better cables in the rest of your system. More Accuracy? the Odin is more of the real thing. It won't cover holes in your system the way the platinum cable will. |

WC, thank you for the info on a speaker cables. This is what cannot be found on most prof. review sides. Much appreciated. |
Agreed denon1. Thanks WC. |
The MX160 or MX150 would be absolutely Fantastic for Home Theater and has RoomPerfect too. |

My methodology of listening in mono as stated has been extensively tested by my experience. It doesn't matter what the brand or price. While not as informative as having 2 pairs of similar components, it is still useful for WC since the requirements of high quality HT with many speakers put him on a tight budget. Since the AQ power cords are clearly at least as good as the Odin, and even if it were a toss up trade-off, the Odin is clearly not a good use of money right now. I am being diplomatic about this. The MOST important element in any system, stereo or HT, is the quality of the speakers. Room acoustic design is close behind, as several people here say. Cables are further down the list, and especially uber-high priced things like Odin. Even flagship AQ is high priced, but if it competes with Odin, then Odin is badly overpriced. It is obvious that $48K for Odin power cords would be better spent on more critical elements of WC's top HT system. WC's findings with AQ Dragon HC suggest trials with cheaper AQ products, just as he has done with Nordost, and especially Wireworld. Go AQ again! |
Where are you getting 48k for Odin 1 pc? |
For Home Theater I would look at Marantz, Integra or NAD Master. Integra has a new receiver out that has digital amps and are said to be "REAL" good acording to my buddy who has worked in the industry for many years and is currently with Stone and Glidden in King of Prussia, Pa. I'm currently using an older Integra Pre-pro and like the sound but want to change to one of the other 2 I mentioned. I like NAD's upgrade ability when new formats or upgrades are available so you don't have to buy a whole new unit. |
WC,
I am an old school guy, 70. I put together a HT 5.1 system 10 years ago, in combination with my 2 channel. I tore out all the HT stuff and now watch TV through my 2 channel system.
Not saying you should do that, but consider this thought: If you have world class 2 channel, why not watch TV, movies, etc and listen to the dream system. As opposed to hearing things blow up from behind and beside you with lesser quality.
Just ideas to contemplate. Thanks again for sharing your journey, I live vicariously through your journey and hope it continues for a long time.
|
I wonder if you could have the 2ch on one side of the long end of room and have the front 3 for HT on the opposite wall. So you would have your back towards one while enjoying the other. |
I can second how great the Marantz 8805 is, it's even upgradeable to HDMI 2.1 down the road. You mentioned the Denon 8500 which is also great and upgradeable as well. If I am not mistaken, it's also the only current Denon amp which you can shut off the amp section and just use as a pure pre/pro. The sound characteristic of Denon is a bit more energetic and a tad brighter than Marantz which some say they like better for movies.
I tend to stick with Denon/Marantz for A/V, since they just work, usually support everything that is needed at the time of purchase and many years down the road, and they sound great. |
WC, Sorry for my confusion about pricing. But it is clear that general prices of Odin are much higher than flagship prices for AQ. For Odin 1, you are smart to try it compared to more expensive Odin 2, which is not necessarily better. I like when more mainstream companies like AQ utilize their dominance to come out with upper echelon products like Dragon HC. Their prices for outstanding performance will be more reasonable than companies like Nordost. I think it is worthwhile to spend a lot of money for quality, as long as at that level it is a better value than other quality products. AQ fits that criterion. Also, listening in mono obviously doesn't enable comparisons of spatiality, but it does differentiate tonal quality, which is still the most important element of any music.
I agree with lhasaguy above, "if you have world class 2 channel, why not watch TV/movies and listen to the dream system, rather than hearing things blow up from behind and beside you WITH LESSER QUALITY." You could still have a large screen between 2 great speakers and have highest quality audio and video. The money you save without the HT multichannel setup could be deployed for all the top quality AQ cables (maybe even Nordost) you want, as well as top speakers like Wisdom Audio, Alsyvox. Room treatments optimized for stereo are still worthwhile with good cost/benefit.
|
Although I am a 2 channel guy, I must admit, an excellent home theater rig can easily eliminate going to the movies often. However, I am yet to hear a home theater system as good as several movie theaters I visit, so why bother. That can be said about live performances, vs. listening to those same performers on a hifi rig. How many times can I watch ( and listen ) to Terminator ? For me, it is not the same as listening to Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunter, or the Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East, which I can listen to, many times over. Music draws me in. Movies draw me in. But once I see a movie, I am not as drawn in the 2nd or 3rd time I see it, unlike music. But, I do understand the desire to want, and to have, both. And, if wc gets to a level with this new room, where his 2 channel rig sounds " as good " as it does now, he will be doing good. Not hearing his current set up, and I do believe his current room is very cramped for a pair of Neos, wc might even get better 2 channel, even with the negative effects of combining the 2 formats together. Besides, the home theater will be for wc, and the family, so in a way, everyone will be happy. And let’s face it. We all want to be happy. So, only positivity from me, with the future build of wc’s room. Enjoy ! MrD. |
mrdecibel, Agree, although the whole family can enjoy highest quality stereo with a nice screen between them for highest quality audio and video. If someone wants bounce around surround sound, movie theaters do it better, but superior Neo or most other audiophile speakers compared to crappy movie theater speakers will yield a much better home audio and video experience using 2 channels.
|
I like my Home Theater sound better than at the movies. I feel it as good or better and it is much smoother . Sometimes at theaters I hear sharp ,ear piercing, over amped or distorted sound and/or unclear dialogue. I do not have those problems at home . |
@ WCSS
I’m with you on the in-wall speakers for your HT, I use 2 for surrounds in mine. However using an in-wall for a center channel might not be the best for clear, articulate dialogue. I think using in-walls for your rears, surrounds and all of the height speakers would be great, but I think I would keep the Neo’s in the mix with a passthrough in your preamp to a processor/receiver and get a ML center channel to match the sound of the Neo’s. Place 2 subs in the back of the room and run your Neo’s full range. That way you get full range sound all around you and the 3 most important speakers (center and front L&R) your best speakers, are handling most of the critical information....I’m definitely not a HT guy so maybe someone with more HT knowledge can clean-up or expand on my thoughts.

Viper6,
Who declared you king of value, that you should pronounce what anyone should spend their own money on? Who declared you god, that you should divine how two pieces of equipment that you have never heard sound compared to each other? Who declared you master of physiology, that your methodologies for testing and evaluating sound quality are better than any of the rest of us?
People try and be polite to you. You have some good ideas but you cause them to be lost in all of your pronouncements and delusions of grandeur. If you are truly so capable, knowledgeable and understand value better than anyone else, start your own company and sell your own line of equipment. Maybe you are correct and then you will sell it by the truckloads and make a huge profit. At least leave us alone and start your own thread.
Your pronouncements insult the OP and many of us on the thread. Your incessant blathering annoys most of us. Many of us have invested vast amounts of money on equipment, cabling, tweaks, etc. Some of the best systems I have ever heard have been wired with other brands of cables. Some of the best systems I have ever heard have been all Nordost. No one company has a monopoly on good products.
As others stated. It's time for you to go back on vacation. Take your time.
|
I agree with ron17, the 3 most important speakers are the L/C/R. For movies, the majority of sound comes out of the center channel and the center needs to match the L/R speakers. Preferable with the same cables and amp. Otherwise, you will find yourself constantly raising the volume to hear the dialogue.
|
WC,
I love movies and music both equally and I personally love to hear the surround sound effect that a good 7.1 system can offer and so does my family. For me it was always about economics as well... Being able to utilize the dollars I spent on speakers, cables and amps for both just always made sense. I'm using a Lyngdorf MP-50 for my processor and a Gryphon Diablo in home theater bypass for movies. For two channel listening I use just the Diablo. If you can make it work and sound good, I would try and combine both. The entire family can enjoy it.
I personally tried the two channel system for movies for a while and, although, good, for me and my family, it was not the same. I agree with Ron17 I would go with matching speaker manufacturers for the L/R/C. We have Focal Sopra 3s with the matching center and it works great. Inwalls for the rest of the surrounds.
Concerning the screen... We currently have a 75" OLED that we use during the day and then 134" projector screen that we drop down from the ceiling at night(windows in the room). I wouldn't trade the 134" screen for the OLED. The large screen immerses you in the movie so much better. My plan was to originally just go with 110" screen, but my dealer talked me in to the larger screen and he was absolutely right.
Appreciate you sharing your journey and good luck with your new room! |
psnyder149, I thought you were developing respect for me. Classic top audio priorities are speaker and room with everything else less important. It makes no sense to spend many tens of thousands of bucks for cables with relatively mediocre HT speakers. Most music lovers on finite small or even large budgets know classic audio priorities, so this is not my unique pronouncement. Lhasaguy said it correctly above, and I gave him credit for that.
I have never personally insulted you or anyone else here, but I do defend against outrageous accusations hurled at me. Why don't you just sit back and think about what I say, or just ignore it if it is not relevant to you.
|
Viber6. The problem is that you come of as "all knowing" A perfect example is that you said " lhasaguy said it correctly above, and I gave him credit for that." This makes it sound as if you are the only one who knows what is right or wrong . You are acting like you are the Expert on everything. An example of this is that you told WCSS to listen to one Odin one the left speaker and one Audioquest on the right speaker and that because YOU did that , it is the way to do it . I quote My methodology of listening in mono as stated has been extensively tested by my experience.
You have made yourself the authority on all things ......especially Audio. You go on to talk about which cable is better and you haven’t listened to either one. It is very tiring to hear the same type of talk and attitude |
Viber6, @gray9hound captured the point quite perfectly. You may not realize it, but your words are often insulting. I don’t believe that it is intentional. As I have stated, I believe you are a nice guy. But the same messages are being repeated to you over and over again and you refuse to accept them until people berate you. You were doing much better. As you no doubt realized, I and others reinforced a number of things you said. But over the past couple weeks it has degenerated completely.
When you tell people what to do--like you have all the answers--it is rude. When you criticize relative costs and individuals buying decisions, it is rude. When you tell people how they should evaluate things (different than explaining how you evaluate things), it is condescending. You have a perspective and that is reasonable. How you communicate it and state it as if your way is the only way is the problem. When you say "Odin is way overpriced compared to AQ with inferior performance... Go AQ!", you are being rude. Especially, when you have never evaluated Odin or Odin2.
I know for a fact that many of the people that participate on this thread have many tens of thousands of dollars invested in Nordost for example. I have over $15,000 retail in Nordost. Over the past 2 years, I converted from an all MIT cable system, and my system is an order of magnitude better than before.
We are not stupid. We made intelligent, well researched decisions. And contrary to what you may believe, many of our systems are amazing sounding. They may not be to your taste, but they are to ours. You like the third row, main floor. I like 1st row, 2nd balcony. Neither is right or wrong. I am happy to continue this privately, but will not take up any more of WC’s space.
|
Viber, To summarize things here, I think what everyone is trying to say to you here is that you tend to “push” your own opinion on gear you’ve never owned or much less seen in person. This is what enrages many people here and why you get punished for it. I don’t like to push anything on anyone including things I’ve personally owned. Yes, if you ask me for an opinion about a certain component that I’ve owned then I’m going to give you my own without holding back. I also don’t want to break hearts when I give my raw, unemotional opinion about certain brands which is why I’ve ceased from posting harsh opinions about brands as of late. That said, everyone here works HARD AS HELL to be able to put a system together, but if you are going to come and talk bad about certain components, make sure you can back it up with facts rather than preconceived opinions or be ready to pay the consequences... Reading magazines educates you (somewhat) but NOTHING beats real world experience. |
WC, It should be understand that several knowledgeable and experienced people like me, mrdecibel are not shoving our ideas down anyone's throat. However, strongly held views about what is practical and cost effective from a total system perspective can be useful to many people here, unlike biased wishy washy poetry coming from magazines. The strongly held views do not rise to the level of "my way or the highway." Although I have not personally heard an A/B between AQ and Odin power cords, my comments often rely on your reports of your observations, which I know are as careful as if I were there with you, and are therefore informative enough for me to comment on. Of course, my better comments are about things I have personally heard at home.
I hope you excuse my sounding off on uber expensive items, but this relates to several bad experiences I had when I was your age and didn't have much money to spend. In particular, the Mark Levinson ML6a was perhaps the most expensive preamp of the early 1980's at $6500, highly touted of course. I listened at a seller's home and thought I got a steal at half price, $3200. At home, it was a DOG, the worst syrupy thick molasses dull sound I ever heard. No, not a system mismatch or anything like that, just a hyped up piece of garbage. That's where I am coming from, to try to help you avoid financial catastrophe and offer heartfelt advice. You can ignore advice from me or anyone else. Sure it is your money so you're the boss, but in return for your freely given advice to others, I think you can welcome advice to you. None of it is commandments to do this or that.
|
OMG.....he will never get it! |
psnyder149, I acknowledge your points, but disagree about your concept of rudeness. Rudeness is about personally insulting others, not about equipment. Anyone is entitled to say that some equipment is too expensive or bad sounding, but that is only their assessment of an inanimate object, not an insult. In contrast, if I said "why are you, Paul listening to this piece of garbage," that would be rude. And about my methodology of evaluation, it is understood that if I say to someone, "do this," that amounts to the same thing and is not condescension at all. Many people here do the same thing with their advice, but I don't jump all over them just because I don't do it their way, for example with room correction software or subwoofers that don't interest me.
I heard MIT speaker cables at home many years ago, and they were badly veiled, so you made a good move into Nordost. I like my Frey 2 RCA interconnect, but found the more expensive Tyr too warm for my taste. Now, if you happen to be listening to Tyr and you like it but I don't, that is not being rude to you. |
ron17, I am sure there are things that you will never get. If you want to provide useful input, try to use the word "never" as little as possible. I try.
|
ron17, I agree, he's never going to get it!
|
Somebody help me i can't take no more. |
Let’s switch gears. Tomorrow, the Jeff Rowland 925s arrive here. I will have a chance to do a good shootout this Memorial Day weekend which will be the last weekend in which I’ll be able to do any critical listening because construction of the new room is supposed to begin next week through the end of June and I will have to bring some of the audio gear I have in the garage into the living room which will crowd things in here until I’m able to put all the stuff In the dedicated room being built. This means that the month of June will be pretty slow for me with updates other than perhaps how the room is coming along.
|
WC, I have to say that your journey is extremely interesting and fun to follow. The biggest thing I see is when people get caught up in your quest and alot have you can see that with the ones tailing behind your every post which is cool but to some degree I think they are feeling like this is their money too and want you to spend wisely so you don’t go bankrupt while others incourage you to buy the biggest and baddest like you could never run out of funds.
This is all ment to be fun and enjoyable to follow your steps to audio bliss but when there becomes all this bickering like going on a family vacation in the van and the four kids in the back act up. The much needed fun vacation with the family becomes a thorn in the a$$.
I am just a hands on guy working in an automotive repair shop that would love to be able to do 1/2 of what you and most posting here have and can do with their systems and I enjoy seeing what you can do even though I know I can’t. I am into HT and spent a weekend in Philly to listen to and get the best speakers I could. My buddy took me to Overture in Deleware and every Hi-End store from there to Philly. I came home with Triad in room Golds due to Overtures HT room with Triad Plat’s that just slacked jawed me, litterly breath taking. I couldn’t afford the Plat’s and just barely afforded the Inroom Golds but enjoy seeing what those of better means can put together.
I would guess most posting here have a higher level education and have been able to acquire carrers that allow them these luxuries and that all good you did the work and made the right choices to get you there. The enjoyment of this journey ends (for me anyhow) when the bickering starts like the kids in the back of the van.
WC is the parent driving this van and the kids are acting up. WC has kindly asked all of you to please stay on target and not derail this vacation. If WC was like my dad when I was younger he would pull the van over after 2-3 warnings and pull you out to the side of the road to give a spanking infront of the other passing cars (been there, had that). I really think that WC has shown some very good restraint and I feel bad for him that this trip has (at some level I’m sure) been ruined to a degree because of this bickering and little childish digs from posters that I’m sure are old enough and educated enough to know better. Leave the bickering, digs and rehashing of dumb crap to the kids.
|
Well said dthst. Thanks for following this thread. I appreciate you posting here as well.
|
|
WC, Most informative will be A/B of the Rowland 925 with Centaur, and 925 with the 535 to see what the big price difference between the 925 gives you, or perhaps the opposite in some ways. How does the winner compare to your memories of the Block? Are all these amps well broken in? |
Jeff Rowland 925s & Constellation Centaur 2 both have enough hours on them. If anything, the Lampizator has the least amount of hours out of my components right now.
|

Jeff Rowland 925s pics have now been posted in my virtual system ! i plan to let them play music for at least 24 hrs before I do any sort of serious listening. They’ve been traveling for one week so I know what I hear right now isn’t what they are capable of. Will update later ! |
You have posted, another picture of the 925s, when you had the Wilsons, just as a reminder. |
Yep. I remember now. Well they are back and playing music as we speak. Let’s see how much they transform in the next few days. The mids are smeared right now and not dead center as with the constellation. I expect for them to open up and sound more focused over the next few days. |
