Why would you want a high compliance cartridge to use with a heavy tonearm? The Denon is a low compliance cartridge. A high compliance is used with lighter mass arms!
I need Hign compliance cartridges
Hi, could you tell me
some not very expensive high compliance cartridges (under 1000-1500 usd) MM and MC. that suit for heavy tonearms. If you know exact figures please indicate them.
I know only that denon 103 is a high compliance mc cartridge.
Thank you very much
Serge
Koetsu are low compliance cartridges, for one example. I think Miyajima cartridges are low in compliance as well. Most MC cartridges are on the low end of the compliance spectrum, with some notable exceptions. Seems to me that the MC cartridges I have liked best in actual use are those few with high-ISH compliance. |
Koetsu are an excellent example, as mentioned. But their price begins above your range unless you get a used deal. For a new cartridge, the Ortofon Cadenza Red has a nice low compliance (12 @ 10Hz) and works well with higher mass arms. Note that the higher end Ortofons above Cadenza Bronze actually have a higher compliance and are not as well suited to heavy arms. The Cadenza Red, Blue, Bronze models are the ones you want for a heavy arm like Fidelity Research.

I use Koetsus in my main system. In my vintage system, I use a Franken Denon 103 that has a micro ridge stylus, has been repotted into a wood body and tweaked by Steve Leung at VAS. His prices are reasonable, he can often supply the completed cartridge and provide video of the exact cartridge he is supplying showing it play and is very responsive to customers with fast turnaround. He is located in N.J. and is also a well-regarded repair and retipping operation. |
Dear @serge8 : If you still own your MS tonearm then it almost does not matters about high/low compliance because that tonearm is a removeble headshell design and you always can have different headshells weigth to match the cartridge or cartridges you want to mount on it, listen and decide with which headshell performs the best for your priorities on listen MUSIC.
Regards and enjoy the MUSIC NOT DISTORTIONS, R. |
@pindac , which one did you audition? These are back on my radar as I think about moving to a higher-level MC, like some of the MSL carts. |
I have never known the Phasemation Cart' Model. I am going to suggest it was a higher up the range model, maybe the 2000 as the resident system used is approx' £200000, using Soulution Amp's and Maxonic Field Coil Speakers. The DS Audio Cart' demo'd was claimed to be their most expensive from this period of time, I again assume the Grandmaster. I have also had a very long demo' of a Phasemation EA 350 Phonostage used with Valve Amplification and QUad ESL's and have been left very impressed, it is one of a few SS Phon's I have developed a real liking for, and would/still recommend it as a a model worth receiving a demo' if a SS Phon' in the $4K range was of interest to others. |
@nandric 🤐I will hold my comments on this post of yours. |
@pindac, you will not believe this but the problem is grammar. It is not an science. Grammar allows only one subject and one predicate in each sentence. Look at the ''sell contract''. Onlu seller is mentoned but one can't sell anything wthout a buyer. If the buyer was mentioned than also his rights. Those determine that no buyer can be forced to buy whatever. Otherwise the contrac would be invalid. I wan't mention ''free trade'' in the so called ''capitalistic countries'' For moral questions I would recommend Emanuel Kant. |
By MC kinds one need to separate ''iron '' -from ''coreless coils''. The first mentioned increase the output but also distortionas (sic!) the second decrease output ( +/- 0,2 mV) as well impedance and compliance. Koetsu is example for the first , Ikeda's (FR 7 series) for the later. This than explains wich kind of phon-pres or SUT's one will need. |
