Has anyone successfully put their speakers in storage for an extended period of time?

We’re about to upgrade our speakers, and am thinking of placing our existing, very good speakers in storage for possible future use in a second home or to hand down to our kids when they’re ready.  I cannot think of a downside, with speakers as opposed to electronics.  Any thoughts?

I had some speakers in storage units for a few years.  No damage, they've been fine.  I had some other ones in my not super dry garage for a while.  They work fine but the screw heads rusted from the excessive humidity.
The rubber surround of the speakers will deteriorate  in a couple of decades.

By then, there will no interest in them anyway.

You never really own a set of speakers, you merely take care of them for the next generation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjfXUpVtINE
Funny how they never show the watch gathering dust in a storage unit.
Still have my speakers purchased in 1979 stored in a closet.  Played them a couple years ago and they sounded good.  Been in climate controlled areas the entire time since I upgraded in 2002.
On the wall in my garage is a picture of a Porsche parked in a garage. Below the picture it reads:

All the hours a Porsche spends parked. You don't get those back.

thanks to thanks to all that responded.   We are taking EBM’s advice.  If we can interest any of you in our Kiss speakers by Vienna Acoustics, please see the auction for charity we created on Audiogon this morning

how did you solve the storage issue?

how did you solve the storage issue?
I had a pair of Infinity Kappas in storage twice for a few years.  I remember reading that light is the enemy in terms of causing the speaker surrounds to break down.  Those speakers are 26 years old and still going strong.
So this is where i can share some insight into speaker storage, i Have three storage lockers with speakers in them and i have had these lockers for ten years, these are shipping containers that was on large ships 10' by 40' long, it seems that the foam does rot and this is a sealed container!
and another issue at hand is the glue that the manufacturer uses to build the cabinet breaks down over time and the cabinet rattles when played, but each speaker has it's own issues. so here we go, the Maggies- the panel glue for the construction fall's apart along with the voice coil, Jbl suffers from foam rot and it's white cones foam get's hard and cracks,
Altec with treated pleated surrounds, the treatment flows to the bottom of the woofer, electrostats- the Mylar needs to be re-tighten, then their is the issue of wired connection building up resistance on the connections- and the screws get rusted from time to time  the oils in the verneer dries up.
then you might start to have crossover componets draft out of spec but if you take care of the speaker for storage you should be fine.

Yes!

I stored in the original boxes a pair of Spendor SP1 for well over a decade. I now use them in a second system and they are wonderful.  Still sound amazing.  No problems at all.  Wife draped the cartons in lovely fabric.  Topped with glass and left in a spare room looking like a table.
so glad I kept em’.
You should be able to do it. Just be sure the storage facility is "Climate Controlled", not the kind where the roll-up door is outside. I would check them annually for any disintegration of the surrounds.
