My system's better than yours!
I am starting to sound like a broken record but - check out "Floratone", 2007 release on Blue Note. Even old people like it!
Squarepusher! Wow Duane you are really branching out. You gotta check out David Torn's new album, it's kinda a freakout itself.
Check out a Cd that was voted best Progressive Rock Cd the year it came out "A Place in the Queue" by The Tangent. Very ecletic with music ranging from cocktail jazz to synthesizer infused rock.
Thanks all!!
Since I started this thread 6 years ago,I'm too old now to be freaked out..Gotta watch the ticker!!
How about the soundtrack to "The Lost Highway"?? A good one!
Great thread ~!
LOL! Pehare is on to you already!!!

I wanted to be first to say "Trout Mask Replica" but was beaten to it. Although more mainstream, Capt Beefheart's "Clear Spot" album is a solid recommendation in the wierdness stakes.

The other night I was at a guy's place who had an awesome setup consisting of MBL 101's powered by Gryphon electronics. The soundstage was _spooky_ real.

He was a big fan of Japanese manga cartoons and anime movies. He played a soundtrack from the anime movie "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence". Wow - I listen to all kinds of music from Bach to Bjork, but I had never heard *anything* like this! An incredible amalgam of sound effects, synths, japanese choral music in staccato voices, and stuff that just defies description.

You can also check out Bjork, she's done some pretty fascinating work, my fave would be "Vespertine"

Also take a listen to Fratres by East European composer Arvo Part. (the Flanders Fiamminghi Orchestra on Telarc is the definitive reading IMHO)

Happy hunting,
Mick
Lots to pick from/ hard to guess what will bounce off and what will be absorbed (BTW Trout Mask and Future Days are incredibly deluxe!!!)... here are a few more:
Herbie Hancock-Sextant
Ruins-Burning Stone
Tipographica-Tipographica
Harriet Tubman-Prototype
Massacre-Killing Time, Funny Valentine, Meltdown
Fermata-Fermata
Frank Zappa-Waka Jawaka
Crater-Proceed
Kollektiv-Kollektiv
Dr. Nerve-Skin
Blast-Stringy Rugs
Holger Czukay- On The Way To The Peak Of Normal
Squarepusher-Feed Me Weird Things
Can, Future Days
Capt Beefheart, Trout Mask Replica

I think I know what you're up to....
Check out Material's "Hallucination Engine" CD - I'd describe it as Mid-Eastern Ambient Space Funk. Some of the players: Bill Laswell (producer as well), Boosty Collins, Sly Dunbar, Wayne Shorter, Bernie Worrell. Excellent freak out stuff.
SOPOR AETERNUS. The most beautiful avantegarde/gothic/mournful/from the crypt music, Anna's voice is something to behold. My favorite artist ever. Sings In German and English.
My system is a multichannel/2 channel set of a Bryston amp, and precessor, 9b-sp1, a HD Toshiba-A1 DVD player with a HDMI cable ,Concierto baby grand pc.I have a 42 inch panasonic widesceen pluged into a monster 5k power conditioner, hddvr system that rest on a beautiful black /metal, and glass Bello tv stand. For the music I have a audio Magic box conditioner,Metronome cd player with gold pin 6922 Telefunken tubes, into a Bat 31se super tube six pac preamp. I have a set of 5.1 Sonus faber grand Piano, solo, conserto surrounds, with a 1000 watt Boston Acoustic sub. I have Mit Oracle v2.1 interconnect on the amp for two fronts with Oracle ac1 pc's on the amp - sub. Nervana didital pc,Concierto violin interconnects on the cd player , violin interconnect, and violin pc on the preamp. I plane to use Concierto on the whole music section for words may not tell these cables true story. The the audio stand I chose a Billy Bags black metal with red mohogany shelves providing the focus, detailed bass weight, great ventilation, and the kind of audio eye candy that makes this hobby so irrestible. While my movies sound fantastic, the ultimate goal is for me to take limited funds and produce a multi/2channel system that whould slam from both sides of the fence. The music at this point must produce a liquid nature ,with a midrange that motivates smooth vocals from male, and female singers, tight bass with slam, dynamics, and highs that are'nt harsh.
This is not the music but a puzzle, that will freak you out. Probably not the right forum but let's try anyway

'The dropper' by martin medeski and wood, will freak you out for sure. And it has that strange addictive element to it, that would make it worthwhile.
As far as jazz goes, the Sun Ra suggestion is a good one...so is Ornette Coleman, and some of John Coletrane's later stuff...especially "Ascension".

Captain Beefheart and Johnny Dowd are both good suggestions, though you may never get used to Johnny Dowd's voice. For a real freak show, check out The Shaggs. Todd Rundgren's "A Wizard A True Star" is a goodun', but not necessarily a great recording (recorded in 72 with lots of tracks). Neutral Milk Hotel and Giant Sand are also worth checking out. NMH is a bit lo-fi, but the last Giant Sand album ("Chore of Enchantment")is really recorded pretty well. Beck's "Mutations" is interesting, but mellow. The Flaming Lips' "The Soft Bulletin" is pretty impressive. The Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique" is a psychedelic rap classic (not a lot of competition there). If you think you'd like an odd Beatle-ish/Rundgren/Neil Young influenced band (with a singer that doesn't sound like any of them), you might want to check out The Loud Family "Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things", "Interbabe Concern", "Days For Days", or "Attractive Nuissance".

That's all I can think of for now. Some of them are good recordings, but the true eccentrics don't often get handed a big budget.
A cd from DHM label called ' Mythomania- songs of witches, fairies and ghosts'. A great find in terms of being different classical and at the same time EXCELLENT recording. If you are in to classical you will love this CD. Singing is what will freak you out.( and not because it is in GERMAN)
The Group is called "YELLO" , Cd is "One Second".Everyone is familiar with one of the later tracks but the entire disc has great depth, effects, imaging, and very unique instrumentation. Also check out a CD called "Spies,Music of Espianage".Both are a tremendous work out for speakers and need lots of power to convey their weight.
The Boredoms are exactly what you want.
They're Japanese. They use every sound they can produce by any means. Very loud, pretty much insane but still coherant.
Of what I've heard, I'm most fond of the CD Super Are. What I've heard of their latest, Vision Creation New Sun, is more electronic and jungly.
Has anyone mentioned John Zorn's "Spillane"? If so, I second the motion... if not, thoroughly recommended.
BTW, I confess to improper laziness; am making a hard copy of the posts to read later at leisure.
THANKS everyone!!
I'm not sure these are freaky, but they're certainly exotic and VERY well recorded. Try Warren Smith's "Cats Are Stealing My $hit", Asante's "Ohene Kesee A Ebin" or "Bluiett's Barbeque Band" by Hamiet Bluiett. There's a lot more info and sound bytes on our website.

You might also track down anything by Foetus. I used to have the albums "Nail" and "Hole". It's a very odd mixture of sound effects (a chair dragging across a concrete floor, fingernails on a chalkboard, etc.) with a industrial-sounding drum machine and occational vocals.

I also heard a band recently called the Tards. I'm told the group is an revolving collective of musicians playing very rhythmic bluesy, industrial-rock-punk while pretending to be mentally-challenged. It's definitely weird and potentially offensive. They have a couple of releases available on Sympathy for the Record Industry records.
Give "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd a try. It's been a top selling album for over 25 years now. Amazing album.
Diamonda Galas! I can't listen to her when I'm in the house alone. If she doesn't freak you out you're froked.
You want weird, here ya go. I love Electronic Music!

Try these:

1) Anything from Synergy aka: Larry Fast
2) LOGOS or UNDERWATER SUNLIGHT from Tangerine Dream
3) Anything by Kraftwerk
4) Peter Gabriel Security

All of the above should give your head and speakers a real workout.
This is album of the year material IMO, but would fit into the freak me out category as well. Jim Black "Alasnoaxis" this albums got everything, most of all though it's jazz. Also anything by Coil ought to freak you out.
Try "May Blitz" from Amazon (before they go out of business). Get the import with both their only two albums on one CD.
Freak Out! by Mothers of Invention

IMO Zappa's best and it'll probably freak you out.
Reggie Workman, "cerebral caverns" excellant sound quality and imaginitive use of standard insturments.
WARNING! anyone who has never experienced mind altering drugs should not try this disk alone. Above average potential for fear and suicidel thoughts.
BEWARE! anyone under the influence of mood altering drugs should aproach this disk with care, total brain melt is possible.
PROHIBITED! use of LSD, Angle dust, Heroine and other hellucinagentics is stricktly prohibited. Certai death will occure within 16 hours of listening!
Here's a few. Sound track to Twin Peaks, the David Lynch TV serial(remember?). Henry Kaiser, the guitar player, does a good job of recording indiginous music of strange places with known musicians - I like 'A World Out of Time' with David Lindley in Madagascar. Djivan Gasparian has a wonderful CD of Armenian flute & voice called 'I Will Not be Sad in this World' - this is a soul crying out in a universal language. Finally, and with a high recommendation, try 'The Sound of the Vanishing World' by Kroke (oriente music). Kroke is a klezmer group from Cracaow in Poland. This CD is excellent; I heard it on the radio late one night and trcked it down. Proof that there is still culture and vitality in Poland (as they say in the notes). It sounds to me like songs the earth will play when we at last can hear that music. Good hunting.
I agree with one of the post above. Krono's Black Angels is genius music that could make you fall out of your chair at times, at the same time retaining very well recorded musicality.
Check out Alien Sex Fiend, Front Line Assembly,Gary Numan,Skinny Puppy,Ethyl Meatplow,Ministry (the land of rape and honey),Ozric Tentacles,& Barkmarket
The label rings a bell Jim. Cannot quite recall where I saw it - certainly not on that CD you mention. My brother lives in Melbourne (raised the average IQ of both countries when he left NZ, to quote a really old trans-Tasman joke), so maybe he can get me a copy.
Jim,you my man! that was great!! I dig Lou Reed, gotta get that one! In fact I may have it on vinyl in my basement.I bought 3000 LPs over the summer for 50 bucks and have been selling lots on eBay.I think I saw that one in one of the boxes!!
Nine Inch Nails' "Further Down the Spiral" has the qualities you're looking for on steroids when compared to most of the above posts. Skinny Puppy's "Ain't it Dead Yet" is also excellent. I would also suggest the "Lost Highway" sndtrk, Prick, and almost anything on Nothing Records except for PWEI. They're all easy to find.
"Tokyo Trashville" is fun. Compilation of various Japanese bands, mostly guitar based but very diverse in sound. Scary to the Western ear. (Most famous is "Guitar Wolf".) Great sexy, skanky cover, too. A voluptuous dream woman -- with an ass and legs of the Robert Crumb variety -- humping the Tokyo Tower with great passion. Godzilla's got nothing on this man-hurtin' babe. Not so easy to find on Au-go-go Records, Melbourne. I know you'd be slumming, Redkiwi, but are you familiar with this label. It's Melbourne/Tokyo based. Started by Haku-gin on the Tokyo underground club circuit. Very good.

You want scary? You want dark? Johnny Dowd's "Wrong Side of Memphis" (Checkered Past Records). One review sums it up as "...dark, telegraphically visual songs that come off like a fusion of Johnny Cash and Lou Reed stepping out of the pages of a Charles Burns graphic novel...". Couldn't have said it better myself.

Lou Reed's "Berlin" is scary if you listen and think about the people described there. Actually had a neighbor call the police when I played a track with children screaming and crying (way too loud). I had just moved in a couple of days before -- humiliating to say the least.
Just a thought... but maybe try 'Jesus Freak' by DC Talk if
you think you can handle it!!!
Here's an easy one to find: The soundstrack to "Interview with the Vampire" on Geffen. I am using it right now to test a power conditioner on the mini system.
OK,OK!! Im freaked out enough and I havent even had a chance to buy one of these recommendations yet! Just wondering,What kind of retail outlet would be most likely to carry these obscure titles?
Kronos Quartet's Black Angels one of the weirdest/coolest CDs Ive ever heard. It was written by George Crumb and was inspired by the Vietnam war. Kronos is an "electrified" string quartet. They use strange percussion, chanting, and other techiniques that give the CD a very dark and errie flavor. It's also recorded very well.
Check out www.anomalousrecords.com where you'll find the oddest music on the planet - I guarantee it! For starters, try 'Home, unspeakable' by Bernard Gunther. Extreme low end, extreme weirdness. You'll never be the same again. You'll redefine 'music'.
david, yule love this: nusrat fateh ali khan & michael brook - *night song*. *wery* freaky, & amazing low-frequency info as well.
Dean Peer "It's All Good", the Antenna Repairman "Ghatam", Planet Drum (Mickey Hart) "Supralingua", Proteus 7 "For Your Ears Only" The last one is less weird--but has some very good effects. All of these are exceptional sonic quality.
Look for recording by Robert Rich. He is featured occassionally on the Hearts of Space PBS radio program. He prides himself in making electronic music recordings that are audiophile quality. His web site is www.amoeba.com --- his recording are available at most record stores like Borders or Tower, and can be purchased directly from him on his web site. There are samples on the web site also.
Check out Laurie Anderson's Big Science. There are many great and different pieces on there. One of my favorites is Oh Superman, a great song. I think it was Rolling Stones song of the year back in the late 70s. Her work is mainly as a performance artist, but it translates great to recordings. It certainly qualifies as different.
