Have your standards/taste in music changed?
Looking for the intangible something that Whart referred to keeps things going for me. Sometimes it shows up when you'd least expect it. Over time the silliness of dividing music into genres seems to become more obvious. Patto was a fantastic band...
Best live albums from 1970's college days
A few I didn't see listed yet:-Zappa / Bongo Fury (Advance Romance and Muffin Man are musically brilliant brain eaters that never fail to amuse)-Kraan / Live 74' (Criminally under appreciated jazzrock, really catchy riffs, and on this album Kraan ...
Check out Larry Carlson's trio
Just caught a show w/ Gene Coye playing in the Daniel Rosenboom Quartet a couple of days ago...it was apparent that he's expanded as a percussionist since that admittedly excellent Larry Carlton clip.
Hot Rats
Hey Tostadosundios, no big deal...appreciating / digging the stuff is what counts!
Hot Rats
...Twenty Small Cigars is not on Hot Rats...it is on Chunga's Revenge tho'....Petite Wazoo is a good Archival disc. The Jean Luc Ponty plays the music of Frank Zappa record also features some pretty spiff playing and compositions.
Hot Rats
None of the tunes I named are on Hot Rats... the post took a stab at listing a few tracks from other albums that anyone who likes Hot Rats would probably enjoy.
Hot Rats
Great album, one of my favorites from FZ... it's packed w/ excellent compositions. Kind of expect that anyone who digs this one could find a lot of his other recordings pretty rewarding. Tunes like Twenty Small Cigars, Blessed Relief, Big Swifty, ...
Jean-Luc Ponty
He's obviously got prodigious skills, (too bad he's sometimes chosen to go for a very low common denominator and to put out cheese whiz). His Plays the music of FZ recording provided him w/ a level of compositional meat that he's never been able t...
Why does most new music suck?
Previous posters pointed to the fact that right now lots of young people dig records that were made before they were born. That generally wasn't the case in the 70's. Musicians in earlier decades had a smaller inventory of background music floatin...
Jazz for aficionados
Hmmm... The Mingus in Europe recordings i have were made in 64' (the same year Dolphy died).
What country still has music?
The please tell us what you've come up with that sold for large sums of money and was used in hit records argument is weak and Palinesque, (as in Sarah).Coming up w/ a hit record can be easy or very hard... skill and knowledge are often poor predi...
Any Alice Cooper fans?
Could that girl from work have been loving the (original) Steely Dan from Naked Lunch? A lot of times the magic stuff happens when bands are young and hungry. A big budget doesn't make it last forever...completely agree with Musicpod.
Help me discover some new music...
It mathematically makes sense to argue for a law of diminishing returns in terms of innovation and originality in art, (there is plenty of not real tasty supporting evidence around). But occasionally surprises have popped up and have appeared to b...
underrated or unheard of musician/band
Originally from Turkey and great for sure... on par w/ McLaughlin, Coryell or early Pat Martino. Wish his recordings were easier to find, (even youtube doesn't have anything). I loaned out Hot Cargo and never got it back. The Guitar Plus recording...
