Ever Bought an Audio Product that was Stupid Good for the Money?

This is the place to share. Please no shills.

A fully functional Dynaco Stereo 120 and a Dynaco Pas-3 preamp combo at a garage sale for the total price of $4.00. Had the 120 modified by Frank VanAlstine and the preamp modified by Michael Fraser. Total killer for a small outlay in cash.
Schiit Eitr. Inexpensive and it can definitely improve the sound and allow you to get the most out of almost any DAC. Although totally frustrating that most DACs don’t actually work optimally out of the box and need a band-aid like this.....

KLH Nine electrostatics bought from the first owner for $500 in 1992! Still have them in use!
@dpl35

I picked up a pair of Infinity Interlude IL40s for $200 (and the guy threw in an Infinity IL100s subwoofer and an old Infinity CC3 center channel that he just wanted to get rid of).

Amazing speakers for the money, they're serving as my mains in the HT, along with the matching Interlude IL36C that I had to track down on Ebay (and that ended up costing more than the towers, but it is an amazing center channel).
Forgot about the Acoustat 1+1s I got on an even trade for some bookshelf Klipsch. Other party was moving and couldn't take the 'stats.
Pure luck, the right place at the right time.
I took the Boston Acoustics T-830s to an audio lovers meet Sunday. They amazed several attendees with how well they filled up over 1,000 sq. Ft., being quite small for floorstanders. I paid $550 for the pair in 1993. They were my true loves until I got a pair of Canton Ergo 1002DCs for $800. Although the Cantons are now my true love, I cheat with my old girlfriends. Don't tell.

I also got a pair of Genesis Physics model 7s brand new for $75. I don't know what that sales guy was thinking.
Boston Acoustics A40 speakers
Mission 707 speakers
Pioneer SP-BS-22 speakers
Second-gen AR turntable introduced in the 80s
Shure VR-15 cart
Original Kimber Cable
Vandersteen 1Bs
Vandersteen 2Cs
PS Audio Elite integrated
Carver CD player with tubes
BIC 960 belt-drive TT
Grado carts
Oppo 103 UDP
Krell s300I integrated
Primacoustic acoustic panels
Anticables ICs and speaker cables
Jim Smith's book Get Better Sound

Easily the best CDP I have ever used, was one that was $29.00 when on sale. Stupid because hardly anyone believed me till the small trickle of listeners started to explore and then started to collect so they would never be without. Now the Magnavox 2300 (and relatives) has got it's own audiophile cult following.

I'm not talking "for the money" either. You'd be shocked to find how many folks have walked away from their $20,000.00 front ends to end up with this treasure. Here's a PM sent to me just 2 days ago.

"Michael,

The speaker and IC wire is opening up nicely on my passive pre, and I used your setup for using a splitter from the Maggie to the pre amp and paradigm crossover to the sub and WOW! The Maggie is pulling detail that was previously covered up and there is more space between the players in the sound stage. And, the MGD MP sub is sounding the best that I heard with real detail in the bass region. If there is treble energy in the song, I am hearing it reflected from my ceiling as well as spreading the soundstage. And, you feel the dynamic swings in the music which was previously covered up. The passive Pre amp and the Maggie are giving the best music I have experienced in years."

And that's one of scores that I have received.

Caintuck Audio's Betsy open baffle paired with a Musical Paradise MP-301 MK3 SEP amp is pretty stupid good. Add in a Chromecast Audio & Schiit DAC for a killer sub 1k system.
A six month old used Lumin S1! Awesome Streamer/DAC combo. Beats the hell out of everything else I have tried from Auralic, Aurender, and PS Audio.

I found a pair of Infinity Primus 360 speakers for $125.  I think these sold for around $750 new.  Great deal at the full price, but crazy good for $125. Great full sound, detailed but not fatiguing.
Recently bought a $40 pair bookshelf speakers from CL that are just stupid good for the money.  They are a diy version of early Rega speakers, Rega Kytes I believe.  I'm sure they trounce speakers costing many times more.

I find there are a lot of real bargains on CL especially on larger floor standing speakers as listening habits change and people go towards miniaturization.
LOL Neal. They are pretty decent at $300, especially the fit and finish for that price point.
AudioEngine 5 self-powered speakers. Purchased on Audiogon new for $300, find me a better monitor for less than $3000!

A Garrard 401 turntable. No jitter in the slightest and as musical a turntable I ever heard. It is a fluke.

it is a good idea :)  The new Apogee table will match well with my Ethan Allen cabinet.

Just think about using the good condition one for the center chanel  (will need to display both speakers to avoid the sore look of one odd trapezoid speaker). Am just curious what difference it would make to offset the time searching for good amp and surround preamp.
Apogee Duetta Signature speaker for $0. One of the speakers was damaged while air transported to US from Europe and the reputable dealer returned my money.
Cost about 5k to repair the pair so it is now just for look only and I do not know what to do with them yet.

The David Berning designed Linear Tube Audio Micro ZOTL2. Nothing sounds like it for the price and it’s an audio Swiss Army knife. An incredible preamp, head phone amp and a 1 watt integrated amp, used with high efficiency speakers sounds like nothing I’ve heard.
1 Chromecast Audio, for convenience at a bargain price.
2 DSpeaker Antimode 8033 room eq unit for best sonic improvement for a modest price. Room acoustics is where the biggest sound quality improvements can be had and this one does a great job taming in-room response of subwoofers.
My my greatest audio bargain was a pair of Acoustat 1+ 1's that I bought used for $600.
I have been enjoying them for the last 16 years. I know there are better speakers out there. I have been able to listen to some impressive speakers at audio shows. I also understand that I will never have the resources to afford said speakers.  I always return home from listening to high end speakers at shows and I sit down in front of the acoustats and think " They are still really pretty good".
Although I generally keep away from those discussions, I agree with Geoff on that...

So many have discussed wire directionality, and staked out the cases for or against.  The tone of the conversation routinely crosses the line of usefulness, and transcends the magnitude of the issue itself.  I feel content to let both sides live happily.  If you believe in the directionality of wire, fine.  If you don't, also fine.  No one should lose any sleep over it either way.  Perhaps the one thing I can add is my belief that the resistance measurements folks in audio employ to disprove the phenomenon may lack the sophistication to actually do so, and provide the real answer.

Just out of school in the early 90s, I worked as a material scientist / R&D chemist for a company that produced (conductors, resistors, dielectric, solder, etc.) materials for the electronic industry, including those that build the resistors and capacitors we use in audio.  Through the course of my experiments, I often encountered situations that left me wondering how the results could impact the world of high-end audio.  Don't miss the low salary, but do miss the environment and equipment that would allow me to kick such things around.  Had access to the internet, forums like this, and the sharing of knowledge that we do existed, I would have conquered many of those hills, but such is life.

Sadly, the quantity and quality of folks working in this realm continues to decline.  With few exceptions, what remains doesn't strike me as having the sort of background, equipment, time, or personality that ask and answer such questions

For the last five years or so I've been on a journey as I learn more about audio equipment, especially digital audio, with nearly constant swapping of individual pieces in my audio system, I think I'm "done" with the hardware upgrades for now, and can relax and enjoy discovering new (to me) music.  Since I've gotten the system to where it is, I'm very satisfied with my purchase, so though the equipment is not "inexpensive", I would say it's "stupid good for the money".  Nice to relax and not stress about the equipment.  My list:
McIntosh C2500 pre amp, MC452 power amp, Autonomic MMS-5A server, PS Audio P10 power plant, DirectStream DAC, DirectStream CD transport, Mytek Brooklyn DAC (for streaming MQA), Focal Sopra No2 speakers, JL Audio F113V2 sub woofers (2), Sennheiser HD800 headphones, Dell laptop iTunes/Tidal/Roon, Wireworld cabling
They are going to start selling a DI version with Scanspeak drivers. I don't think that it will be a lot better and certainly not as stupid good for the money.
I bought the Tekton Double Impact speakers with the upgrade. 3530.00 delivered was stupid good for the money!!!! Big time!
Superphon Rev Preamp. Ridiculously good for the $75 I spent on it used in the early 90's. The Chinese tube mono amps ASL was selling in the late 90's were way better sounding than there asking price. Lowther speakers with the right amps are incredibly good for the the money. You will need a sub though... Just bought a pair of Valvet E1r mono blocks that absolutely sing with the Lowthers.
Quicksilver Mid Mono amps....  bought them used at $1000 but still a steal at 1895 new.....
Gabriel Gold Reflection v2  innerconnects...Hearing is believing...a down right steal at auction pricing.
Just read someone here on A'gon just scored a Counterpoint SA-20 at the Goodwill store for $150 - that was a $2K amp, was it not?  That's a stupid good score - and it seems to work just fine too.....
CJ PV10 have had for 27yrs !  Not the best but always put a smile on my face .
Spender 3/5
Audio Research classic 30 (Used)
How would you compare the fleawatt to the APPJ?

I enjoy them both to be honest and I think @seikosha sums it up pretty well. Let me add the Fleawatt is perhaps a bit more extended in the highs. Both are very musical little amps.
I've got some Fleawatt amps as well as an APPJ.  Both are great values.  I prefer the APPJ, but I'm a tube guy.  The Fleawatt is more versatile and has a nice clean punchy sound.  Basically the differences between the two is classic tube vs solid state.
My last 2 purchases have been among my favorite stupid-good buys:

APPJ PA0901A - $190
Fleawatt Audio TPA3116D2 - $250

The sound quality at this price point is just ridiculous.

Quicksilver Mid Mono amps......huge bang for the buck....built like a tank,   such a great pair of amps for the money.
Can't beat those Fleawatts!  I've had a few of them and love Derek's creations.  All very musical and stupid good for the $.
Picked up a McCormack DNA1 for 600 bucks.  Still my favorite used audio purchase of all time.

seanheis, which Gemtune 1501 do you have, the one with 6bq5's or the 6AD10's?

6AD10.
