Ditching Roon going back to BluOS for Bluesound Node 2i

My Bluesound Node 2i is connected wireless through my very good Eero Pro mesh wifi (love this network btw) and I hear nothing but awesome things about Roon.  So I bought the trial and don't really like it.. I figure there's got to be something I'm missing.

Points and issues:
1. I do not use a NAS.. I stream Tidal/Amazon exclusively.

2. Big one here: Roon does NOT list the top songs from artists! You have to select the album.
.

3. Using wifi, there's a large lag in playing a song through Roon (10-20 seconds until the song finally starts mid-song) Works fine hardwired but it's not ideal for my setup.

4. The DSP functions in Roon is nothing but an EQ that requires me to know alot about what I'm adjusting and can only adjust from the main computer (core)

5.  With Roon, I have to keep my main computer running all the time

All of these issues seem to be alleviated with the BluOS app.. Am I missing something here because I would rate the BluOS app FAR superior to Roon.

Mostly I was hoping he might check in and make a cameo appearance.  A lot of the old posters signed out before they left, letting us know they were quitting posting.  But he just disappeared one day.

big_greg, he was just one of a few that had a pleasant way of pointing out the strength's in someone's system, because he seemed very familiar with a lot of equipment, I mean about a ton of equipment.

If I could channel him I would, sadly no, but thank you.

I miss Jaybo, he always had a way of making people feel happy with what they had.

It appears you're going out of your way to follow that example.
Well, the Lumin is 4 times the price of the Bluesound, so if there is anything to the saying "you get what you pay for", it should sound better. And of course, looking down the line, when a better streamer comes out for the same price as the Lumin you will loose 4 times as much on its resale.

I get what you are saying. But when is the last time you paid twice as much for an audio doohickey and got a 50% improvement. I really don't think most 10K speakers sound twice as good as 5K speakers, all things considered. But as audiophiles we tend to pay a lot for incremental improvements. To my ears, the Lumin sounded good enough to shell out the $$. YMMV.......

Hmm. Did you make the Lumin folks "happy" with their choice???

You are right. S/PDIF is a communication standard. Toslink is a connector. The difference is one is a coaxial cable with RCA connectors and the other is optical with Toslink connectors. I should have clarified that.

Oz

No, S/PDIF is almost always coaxial, which is what I use. You are thinking Toslink.

Oz

Cool.. Why are you using SPDIF.  My understanding is this is  the lesser of all digital connections.  I thought the hierarchy  went something like this:

1. i 2s
2. USB
3. Digital Coaxial
4 .Optical / SPDIF (same things right)
Compared to the Node 2i, the Lumin is more transparent and natural sounding. The music seems to be more continuous and less digital. As good as the Node is, and it is a killer value, the Lumin just steps it up and makes the music so much more enjoyable. And of course this is with both streamers going directly into my MHDT Pagoda via SPDIF.

At least that's my take on it.

@ozzy62 I have been eyeing the PS Audio Directstream DAC with bridge II for streaming as well.  I could probably save money with the Lumin Mini.
@ozzy62 Greattt.. Looks like I'll be wasting another whole day at work trying to justify buying a Lumin now.  Then not buying because of all the "bits are bits" posts that make me feel stupid for paying that much for just a streamer.

But many seem 100% convinced that a streamer is NOT just a streamer.
I used Bluos with my Synology NAS and it worked flawlessly. Love the bluos app.

I now use a Lumin U1-mini with the same NAS and minimserver installed. This also works great.

For the OP,  you would be very surprised at how much better a Lumin streamer sounds over your Node 2i.

Oz

@dougsat  Yes BluOS will work with NAS but my understanding is that Roon is far better at working with a NAS integrating it in with streaming services.
@dtximages

You’ve mentioned:

Points and issues:
1. I do not use a NAS.. I stream Tidal/Amazon exclusively.

Wait doesn’t BluOS also read a NAS ?
So not sure I understand that one.
On the Android or Windows app ( all I have ).

Search for the artist.  Say "Stevie Nicks"

Then slide the panel up, and you'll find the top tracks.

Best,

E
@erik_squires how and where do you see this?   Are you talking about on the phone app?
So, I just tried Roon, and yes it does show you the top tracks of an artist.

Best,

E
Not a Roon fan. We use iPeng. We believe it sounds better and is less expensive. Streaming Qobuz with Innuos  Zenith mk3 server is a breeze.

charles
Again thanks for all the feedback. This solidifies my thoughts that BluOS is better for me since I don't use a NAS and mainly stream from Tidal.

I do love the BluOS software but thinking about giving the Volumio Primo streamer a try with their software too.
@dtximages,

Roon is not needed to enjoy streaming from Tidal/Amazon or Qobuz. It’s just a matter of personal preference...BluOS is simple and easy to follow. I have dropped Roon after the trial based on your #4 & #5.
@dtximages where I feel Roon excels, in terms of functionality as opposed to visual features, is if you want to seamlessly merge multiple music sources and manage multiple playback systems.
My Roon trial is about to expire. I can’t believe how superior it is to iTunes. It’s like I rediscovered my 500+ album collection. Also listen to Tidal is more interactive as well. Will be subscribing
Thanks for the info.. I'm not seeing anything I missed and without a NAS, I don't see the benefit for me. This is what I expected.

Also, I don't really need the DSP if I use my Anthem integrated amp because it has ARC.

But yes, @erik_squires when you select an artist, you can only see the albums listed, not top songs.  I love the top songs feature in Tidal/Spotify/Amazon...  I feel lost without it.
You don't like it. You don't need it. I would be lost without it.

I use Roon to replace my previous iTunes + airport express (s) + airplay devices for multi-room synchronous streaming.

It works very well for that AND streams Hi-Res while integrating my personal library with Qobuz as if its all one library with album/artist information and links to even more music.

None of it is hardwired and is only utilizing an Eero mesh wifi.
1 - I do.

2 - I'll have to check this when home

3 - Never had this issue

4 - It is a semi-manual process, it is not as integrated as anything with Dirac Live (like the miniDSP streamers) but it's pretty fully featured if you have the tools and experience to set it up. See my blog post on this.

5 - Yep, Roon requires a beefy core, but then streamers can be ridiculously cheap.  I use an old Linux with an AMD A10 CPU for the core, an SSD for the music, and a Pi 4 for the streamer.

In my case, I dusted off the old Linux box, and got a Pi 4, so my hardware outlay was ~ $150.
If all you do is stream Tidal/ Amazon I don't  see any reason for roon just an extra expense.
