Could we get a group of all IRS Beta owners?

Just thinking of a group where we could share tips/tricks on them and keeping them in tip top shape.

Also, info on parts/service providers for updates and upgrades.

That's going to be a small group. Lots of those have been scrapped for parts.

regretfully and regretfully.  But that is why I think it would work.  Those of us that still have them love them and want to keep them forever!

I’m still using my IRS Beta system and have no plans to replace it any time soon. It’s a fantastic system.

Still running a set of IRS Betas. I can agree with a statement made in another thread that they keep getting better as your front end gets better. The mid/hi panels sound sublime with Mac tube amps and a tube pre. I'd love to find a way to upgrade the servo box to XLR if anyone has experience there. Running the bass towers with a Classe CA-400. Simplified from Bryston 7B monos with no sacrifice in performance. A Legacy I-V2 also worked very well.

@stephens770 I have seen a modified SC unit to use XLR.  Pretty expensive proposition though.  Contact Hartmut at Bayer Soundworks in Germany.

He also has a modern take on the crossovers.

I still run the bass with Threshold 12e but the mid/high are now powered by Manley Snappers after i lost the VTL/Manley Ref 100/200.

Funny, I have a spare never used VTL/Manley Ref 100/200 but could not find another one to complete a set.  Very expensive paperweight.

One of my biggest regrets in my audio journey.  My first big adult move and just no way to take them with me.

IMHO, one of the best speakers ever made.

That would be fun.  Wish I was a member of the club, but let these (like many others) pass me by.

The past flames:

AR3a

DQ10

Mirage M3 (still at Mom's house)

Aerial 8b (still own them - on secondary system)

IRS Beta (on primary system)

I still have a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10's that I custom restored.  Added solid Purpleheart trim pieces.  Just beautiful.  Really, really  nice.  Oh...they sound pretty good too...

@ervikingo Thanks for the info.

Does anyone have experience running the Betas with a later gen Infinity Servo w/ xlr? Is it possible?

@mofimadness wow!!!!!!!!!!!  I remember melting the crossovers after playing them for hours at high volume listening to Rush and Saga.

@stephens770 I read about someone trying it with mixed results.

If someone knows of some Beta, Delta/Gamma needing restoration or being parted out, please let me know.  I am trying to get some L-EMIM to be used to develop new diaphragms and other updates.

Mine work fine thus I don't want to use them as blanks for that.

I know who can fix the L-EMIM!

I wouldn't mind a set of IRS V or 3 to modify to V specs!

I managed the High End department of an AV store in the late 80's. Connected a pair of Beta's to two Cello Performance Amps, a Performance Preamp and a Pallette. Stunning!

@stephens770

WOW!  Talk about a "Wall Of Sound".  That room is almost ideal for those speakers.

Thanks for the pic.

@mofimadness  Thanks! And, it was a lot of fun. Sold the second set to a good friend when I came to my senses.

This old man has a pair of second-hand IRS beta.  The surround of the base speaker units was replaced at a shop in Florida many years ago.  Love the sound but do not know how to share in this forum.  I posted some of my home iPhone recordings from the Beta on YouTube under the name of Harold Kwok.

Just a suggestion, maybe consider creating a facebook group. I see lots of very unique and specialty audio groups with them. I'm subscribed to several of them.

@bobee i had seen your videos!  Very cool. I have posted varios on the Vintage Infinity Group on FBook

@willywonka good idea. I’ll do it

there is an infinity group already

@ervikingo I was going for IRS V performance in my room with double Betas. Everything about it was huge. It was fun..

@totem395 yes im AK. Great group but I don’t recall another Beta owner

@stephens770 where are the extra speakers these days?

@tweak1 i have not. I will!

i moved my speakers closer to the front wall yesterday. Brought soundstage closer which is one of my complaints with most prog records.

where is everyone at?

@stephens770 thanks.  I started at 8' and now down to 70".  Referring to the wings - bass are at 60" and outside of the mid/high.  Going to try the Genesis recommended layout with the bass towers inside of the mid/high.

Just experimenting!

@ervikingo Added another system pic of current Beta set up. It’s a second system on the sidewall now. In my experience, these don’t have to be off the wall very far. 2-3 feet has worked well for me. I’ve tried as much as 6-8 feet in prior set up with no huge benefit, so prefer to have the extra space in the room. I’ve pieced together a second system for them now after sitting dormant for a while.

Wondering if Dirac via MiniDSP (installed right before the Servo Controller) or a BACCH would compliment the Betas?

I appreciate thoughts.

@ervikingo Beautiful room and set up!! Very nice. When I ran the multi-Beta set up they all ran through a Legacy Wavelet that I had Legacy set up specifically for the system. It worked well, but the best sound I've experienced through many many set ups and changes with the Betas is running them off of a set of Mac MC901's. Perfect! Honorable mention goes to a pair of MC 275's with a pair of Bryston 7B's. The 275's sounded sweeter and better than the 2301's on them. SS on the high side of the Betas doesn't work well in my opinion unless it's class A from a Tube Pre which is what I'm working on now. I've got an intermittent noise issue with my amp, but when there's no noise it's rivaling the 901's.

@stephens770 thanks sir!

(this forum needs a like button!)

I ran the mid highs with VTL Manley Ref 100/200 and later VTL Manley 225.  Bass always with the Thresholds.

If memory serves me right the Wavelet was a Dac/Crossover?

So what do you guys think of modifying the crossovers (not replacing aging parts with similar specs)?

@stephens770 "I've got an intermittent noise issue with my amp" ????

Have you figured this out?  Anything you can share to see if collectively we could help?

So my son asked to use my system.  I walked in and found him on a folding chair set dead center and about 2 feet closer to the speakers than my seating position.

He suggested we reduce toe in, the mid/high are almost straight, bass towers are hidden from sight from his listening position.

Have to say, it sounds really good with a great soundstage.

What are your measurements?

@ervikingo I've always listened to mine straight or very slight toe in. They are second system now, so on a side wall where I need to keep them close together and close to the wall and guess what..they still sound terrific! I also prefer the sound closer than most would probably think is ideal. I'll need to get a measurement next time I listen.

To all on this thread, made a tough call over the weekend. Mine are now for sale/trade on AG.

@stephens770 I can't find your thread.  Send me details ;) and location.  Also if you have spare parts, i'm interested

@ervikingo I sold them over the weekend. The gentleman that purchased the betas also purchased the extra cables and emims I had. Thanks for checking.
