Data: You are so right. Here in the U.S. it's roughly the total American death count in Viet Nam, each year, right under our collective nose.
It's strange what our brain allows us to ignore (people think psychoacoustics is something) in order to partake in the everyday humdrum. Our romance with cars cannot survive much scrutiny.
You can see from my post above that one of my other great passions is cycling. It is a beautiful thing really.
I raced when I was younger. Fun, healthy, environmentally friendly. A man on a bicyle is the most effecient form of movement/transportation on the planet. And oh ya, the greatest threat is??.... Cars.

Yesterday I was out for a 60 mile bike ride with a local club...like Clueless I too raced when I was younger (8 seasons) and find cycling to be a great passion. About 10 miles into the ride we rode up on an accident and I saw the yellow body bags...this is the second time I have seen this while riding. A man and his son-in-law were hit by a car on PCH (in Huntington Beach, CA). Apparently an accident (the guy was not drunk). The man was killed and his son-and -law is in critical condition with a broken back. Yes, the brain does allow us to ignore such tragedy until we actually are confronted with it. |
About a month ago I saw a study which compared safety (physical well-being) between urban, suburban and far suburban areas. Contrary to the researcher's expectation, the far suburbs proved to be most dangerous areas to live. The higher injury rates were due soley to the added driving times and mileage required by exurban living. Cars are safer now than ever, but driving a car is still a most dangerous activity. Most tragically drivers with less than a years experience are its most frequent victims.
We should enjoy ourselves, but we need to be careful. Life is so very precious. |
Clueless and Jla, I too used to bike race. Time trials mostly. I rode Bianchi. First a Rekord 748 with Campagnolo Nuovo Record gruppo, some Gipiemme stuff, and Nisi wheels. Next a Bianchi Superleggera, all Campagnolo Super Record gruppo and accessories, Nisi wheels. This was back when Chrome-Moly ruled. Loved the ride of that Columbus tubing, and nothing beats cotton tubulars for rubber. Haven't been on a bike for the last 17 years. Used to ride 30 miles a day, with Century(100 mile) rides on weekends. |

...and yes, Onhwy61, I feel much safer driving in my NY than in any suburb. I might get cuttoff by a cab, i might be passed on the right but I almost never see anything sudden there and I'm always aware, calm and cool... My LA friend wondered to my ability not to pay attention to messy drivers and high density traffic. He said that he would've used his middle finger many many times already.
I used to drive for limousine service(the last my driving job was at Music Express) and i managed not to get neither traffic violations nor accidents for a hundreds of thousands miles i've roded back then. |
66 Hemi Belvedere (original paint, original 19k miles) is my weekend beater. It has a Arlen Vanke prepared motor that dyno'd at 740HP on Ray Barton's dyno.
It's an original Hemi car. The serial number says so. The original motor, tranny and etc. are in storage. When I die I'll let the new owner worry about taking the car back to it's original configuration.
When purchased, stock, the car ran the high thirteens. We're in the low tens now and it does drive on the street almost daily.
Fuel costs $3.75 a gallon (112 octane) and that's buying it in 55 gallon drums.

Class B -- Buses and trucks with no trailer over 15000lb with airbrakes
Class C -- Buses and trucks under 15000lb without airbrakes with permition to cary upto 15 passengers
Class D and lower are non-audiofile-professional classes of operation.

My wife has a wagon and a minivan. So even though I drive them I will not own up to owning either of those. I do have a Campy equipped DeRosa that I ride.
We are now in the market for a new car and have agreed the it should have only two seats and no roof (my mid-life crisis car). |
1- 77 Triumph TR6 and 02 BMW M3 convertible.
2- I might trade the TR6 for a '60 Austin Healy 3000.
3- I honestly don't have much of a motivation to spend a lot more than I already have. |
My wife says I'm the only guy in America who paid more for his refigerator than he did for his car. I drive a 1987 Toyota Camry sedan that just turned over 200K miles and there's a Sub Zero in the kitchen.
She drives a 1987 Camry wagon.
Financially speaking cars are a loser so we don't allocate funds to them unnecessarily.

1999 Jeep Cherokee, has around 135K miles on it now so next vehicle will probably be another Jeep. Had my last one to 230K, but I don't think this one will last as long. Dream car would be one that improves with age and has room for a pair of floor standers in the back. |

Gave up my aging MR2T 5 sp after losing my left leg due to acute sciatica following a misstep into a rabbithole, so am sufficing with one of my 10 Subies (a 2k Legacy GT black Sedan at the moment). Someday a used Audi S4 for all-purpose use, or perhaps a BMW 330 or Infiniti G35 SC if biz picks up AND my remaining daughter goes to a public college! |

I drive a black on black, '95 Acura Integra 4d Special Edition. Unfortunately it is starting to show wear and tear, I use it every day for work and I spend from 3-6 hrs on the road, in the city, making frequent stops, six days a week. I plan on getting a Mini Cooper S for work. It's small, so I can park more easily. It moves, 0-60 in 6.7 seconds. Gets good gas milage and I really need to get myself back into a 6 speed trans. My current car is an auto and it bores me to tears.....John |

Mercedes SL500. Only car I ever want. If money was no object, maybe I'd get the SL600. Mercedes does it right. On the other hand, when I'm not blowing money on my stereo, I really maintain myself in the poor house with my custom built Harley, so trick that it defies description (but it does have an Alpine stereo, separate tweeter and midrange/bass speakers, and an 8 inch plasma TV with a rear facing camera for a rear view mirror!). |

1972 Citroen ID-19. The only type of car that allows touching up one's eye liner while hitting speed bumps @ 50 mph.
I may install a TT in the future, but will probably opt for a new radiator first. |
Dekay- Is that one of the Citroen's that has those green hydralic sphere's over the the strut tower? Those cars ride amazing! We had a citreon prestige mid-90's circa that came into my shop a very unusual car to say the least. |
