Needed something good on gas. Parked the truck,(see 05-01-09 above), bought a 5 speed Chevy Cobalt. Kind of like driving a go-kart. Fun.
Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive?
Just curious. People have asked about watches,
cigars, beer, and even ones income here.
1: What do you drive (daily & weekends)?
2: What might you be driving in the future?
3: What would you drive if $$$ was no object (pick 2 ;-)?
My answers to the above:
1: Toyota truck.
2: Newer Toyota truck.
3: Lamborghini Murcielago & McLaren F1.

A Formula Mazda race car sponsored by TARA Labs, Focal, Aesthetix Audio, Audio Unlimited, IT Liquidators and others. The team and car can be seen at QuantSPEED Racing. This car has also been in several magazines, on TV, in various blogs, at the Denver Auto Show in the Mazda booth, at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, and will be at the Denver Good Life Expo helping to draw attention to high-end audio. When I saw that this thread that I posted in years ago was still alive, I couldn't resist posting this. |
Dinan, very intersting. Can you hear the refined highs of the Focals over the noise of the rotary's raucous exhaust??? Just kidding, I know they're sponsors, not installed in the racecar. BTW, I suppose, given your handle, that you have a Dinan BMW. If so, which one? I drive a 2009 E92 M3 with a "Dinan" nameplate mounted inside the trunk in recognition of my Dinan final drive, spring kit, throttle bodies, chip, etc. and I'm a member of the RMC BMMW CCA and active autocrosser. See you at RMAF, if not at BMW CCA. ;-) Dave |
Hi Dave, Over the years I have had a Dinan 5 (E34) a Dinan S3 E36 M3, a Dinan S3 S54 M Coupe, and a Dinan S2 135i that belongs to my wife. Also had an S54 M Roadster that was modded but not by Dinan as I was waiting for the Coupe. I look forward to snapping up one of the new twin turbo Z4's to go off on after they are a couple of years old as the $62K sticker is stupid! The E92 M3 is a blast and a great car to Dinan out. :-) -Carl |
Jtwrace.....Yes, Yes, and yes you did. However, I have been known to steal the "keys" when I am up for some real punishment. BTW, Finally got the suspension geometry and aero really dialed in and dropped a remarkable 3 seconds a lap at our new home track. Plans for running IMSA L1 or on the horizon if wee can get the budget together. If all goes according to plan, this car will run in L3 as a sportsracer next year and then transition to the DP02 for L1. |
"2010 Porsche GT3" - yeah, that's a typical audiophile ride, no doubt. Along with the analogous watch, cigar, beer and income threads - this one is stupid from the get-go. Ain't my first encounter with this thread. Just finally had enough. WTF is "typical" anyway? Of course, just my personal, cranky opinion. Flame on - I'm wearing a firesuit. |

Just picked up 2010 Audi S5 V8 as my new daily driver. My previous 2002 A4 served me well for 8 years, so the S5 is gonna stay for years to come. My wife drives 2006 MB E-class, which serves double duty as our family car. S5 - sexy, sexy, sexy and fun to drive (I'm sure I could pick up any girl with this car) MB - boring, boring, boring but very comfy |

Ghosthouse With or without your fireproof suit, I would respond by saying that your "workingman's" rig description was consistent with your chippy observations about other peoples' expensive hobbies. Understanding that some people might get carried away or like to show off in these types of threads, I think the underlying motivation and common demoninator is enthusiasm for good gear, hence the term "enthusiast". As enthusiasts I have always found that audiophiles can get similarly obsessive about lots of things, and enjoy comparing notes and information on other topics. So I am OK with these threads. I would like to now give you my word that I will buy 5 lottery tickets this weekend. And if I win, I will buy you a Porsche GT3, assuming that would be OK with you? I am glad you are enjoying Audiogon and your system. Whatever your view on these threads, it is a great community. Cheers, cwlondon |
Ghosthouse As promised, I bought the lottery tickets. But I have not had time to check and see if we had any winners. I will keep you posted. Re the Cayman, I would certainly think a GT3 is more fun. But I was thinking of this thread having spoken to a friend today who has a 964, a 993, a GT3 and a Cayman S. His favourite driving car? The Cayman S. |
Hello Cw - How's our luck running? I don't have your friend's breadth of experience with Porsches. Have had the chance to drive only a few. You've hit on my tacit point...I believe the GT3 is more or less a factory prep'd racer. Not likely to be much fun as a daily driver on surface roads - especially here in the States [extrapolating from my experience in a gymnkhana (spelling?) mod'd 911]. In addition, I believe the mid-engine design of the Cayman is desireable. For these reasons, I asked, "would my wife enjoy it (a GT3) more?" She uses the Cayman as a daily driver for a 90 mile round-trip commute. Were the alternative a Cayman S...no hesitation. My recollection of a past issue of AutoWeek put the Cayman S as a real challenger to the 911. I love the balance and driveabilty of the Cayman but wouldn't object to the extra HP of an S. Having said all of this - I still think I want to own a 911 before I'm dead! For me, that is the iconic Porsche. |
I have a 2002 Ford F-150 Lightning SVT truck and a 1989 Toyota 4X4 pick up truck..But have been in the automotive field all of my adult life up until 2007 when I started my own website in vintage audio and quit working for someone else and went to work for me...So I have owned many fun vehicles...The Lightning is still one of my all time favorites though, especially for a truck, 380 hp stock and mine is 440 hp now...FAST...Don...P.S. Of course full of stereo equipment and video equipment also.. |
I have a 2001 Honda civic with OZ audio mids and tweeters in the kick panel for as best as possible imaging and soundstage for a car with 2 10" Kenwood subs in a seal box powered by Phoniex Gold amps. Head unit is Kenwood with and Ipod dock. Car is wired with Streetwires and power caps to handle the power changes with the subs dimming the electrical system on the car. I had a 1993 cavalier many moons ago that competed in IASCA. I won a few sound quality competitions including the Real Time Analyzing segment. I scored 37 out of 40 by using my ear where most others used a mic and a RTA Meter to even get close to that. Hence nick name thegoldenear. Wife drives a Nissan Rogue, nice little SUV Future Car: Mostly WifeÂs Rogue cause she hates it. Dream Car: Some type of Porsche 911 |
1. Audi S4 Avant - what I drive every day. 2. Audi RS5 - what I'm trying to convince my wife we should drive every day (with limited success although she does like the "looks"). 3. Audi R8 or, since cost is no object... Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4- what I'll never drive unless someone around here wins the lottery and even then I'd most likely buy more music. |
1- 2010 Acura TSX (the economical choice this time) 2- 2015 Acura TL SH AWD (or equivalent) 3- Heavily modded 2015 Acura TL SH AWD ---(Twin-turbocharged, race suspension, drop-forged pistons... etc etc. If money was no object I would make this the fastest TL AWD on the planet... And I would marry it because my significant other would leave me... lol!) |

OK, I guess that was a bit of a tease! Got a used 2007 Benz with 23,000 miles. The dealership had it priced at $35,000. With all the options, it sold new for $66,000. I guess given the economy, the car had been sitting at the dealership for 60 days, so they discounted it to $32,000. I got them to come down another $2000, figuring that's what it would cost them to ship to the mainland (where their unsold cars go). I then said, "oh, how much will you give me for my old beat up Honda CRV?" They gave me $5000. So, got this puppy for $25,000 (plus, they threw in an extended warranty). I'm happy! |
