Glen, Good to hear about the PM8004; I am a Marantz guy, too. My SR7005 sounds wonderful.

Jeff, by the by, I really really like my PM8004. I have a McIntosh MA 6600 and a tube integrated as well. It holds it own very well in the bunch. |
Paraneer, You're absolutely right: it is a bit overkill getting an extra pre-amp, which is what I'd be getting with two Marantz PM15S2's. I would prefer a power amp/integrated, but Marantz is not offering that option.
That's what I currently do: I bi-amp my Arcam Alpha 9 integrated with my Alpha 9 power amp.
Yes, I'm a big Arcam fan; I'm waiting to see what comes next: the A38/P38 is now several years old, and Arcam tells me they are coming out with something new soon.
I also own Marantz, and do really like the Marantz sound; the PM15S2 is on sale right now, so it's making me take a serious look at this.
My budget is roughly $4,000, and I keep saving up. I'm open to all suggestions about the best combination I can get to bi-amp with my B&W's.
Thanks again, Jeff |
Very nice speakers Jeff. Thanks for sharing. I am curious though...sounds like your a fan of bi-amping but why consider two integrateds to get the job done? Seems like a waste of a pre-amp section on one of the Marantz's.
Why not consider one integrated and a power amp? Or a pre-amp and two power amps? I have seen and heard B&W 805 Diamonds bi-amped using an Arcam A38 integrated ($2400) and an Arcam P38 power amp ($1600) with very impressive results. It would be cheaper too than two PM15S2's. And your an Arcam guy! |
Nah, that means nothing ... I dont want to get off track. But this is an irreponsible comment. Doses are giving by body weight/BMI, which would be higher than other countries in the US. Just looking at data means nothing ... sorry, a lot of other variable are reponsible for changing dosage amount. |
Paraneer, The amp would be driving a pair of B&W 805 Nautilus speakers, using Kimber 8TC speaker cable. I am thinking of getting two PM152SB's, and running them in bi-amp mode. That's what I do with my current amps, a pair of older Arcams. Jeff |
I'm biomed tech. I'm between medicine and technology.
The current doses practiced in US for local anasthesia are way more than enough and it takes extremely long time for post-anasthesia recovery. I've compared the dosages given between different countries even vs. Canada as well. |
I own the amp you are looking at. I also have 4 1/2" of top clearance for it my open rack. Absolutely no problems whatsoever.
As is the case with just about anyone offering a product or service, they are being overly cautious in this hyper-litigious society of ours. I believe their 8" caveat is right next to the warning not to spill any McDees hot coffee on it either.
BTW, its a great amp and I highly recommend it. I don't know what you intend on driving with it, but I drive a pair of 4 Ohm Vienna Acoustic Bach Grands with mine, and the Marantz has taken these speakers to new heights. |
Everybody, Thanks for your responses. Good feedback.
Glen-how do you like your PM8004?
Jeff |
Czarivey, Are you an anesthesiologist? Are you even connected to the medical profession?
Anesthesia is a dangerous drug. FYI Doubling the dose can kill someone.
Regards, VJ |
Have a Marantz PM8004 integrated, lower level than the one you have your eye on. No worries, you will not need anywhere near 8".
The laptop cooler mentioned earlier sounds like a great idea for tube based gear in tight spaces.. Might try that with my tube CD player. |
I group of us all bought an amplifier of Japanese origin, I was the only one that installed fans, and my unit lasted about 2-3 times longer than the rest of them before the caps failed. So I strongly recommend installing the fans for proper cooling. |
I've noticed that many doctors would apply the double of necessary anasthesia amount during even minor surgeries while minimum is plenty enough or even none if properly performed. Same philosophy very often is applied to any product or process. Don't worry even if it's 4" after all. |
I think they're talking about closed cabinets. You won't have any problem in an open rack. |
Best you put a laptop cooler under the unit, small price, great insurance. |
Don't worry about it, you have plenty of clearance...
